Axes Are Falling: Clips Waive Solomon Jones

According to a tweet by Brad Turner at the LA Times the Los Angeles Clippers waived Solomon Jones this morning, bringing their roster down to fourteen.

It's somewhat ironic, but as we wait for news of the Chauncey Billups' injury, today, Tuesday, February 7th, is the last day a non-guaranteed contract player can be waived. Until Solomon Jones was cut this morning, the Clippers had fifeen players on their roster with the recent addition of Kenyon Martin. With the injury to Chauncey Billups and the continued assertion that the front office might be chasing J.R. Smith or other players, it seemed certain that the Clippers would trim the roster today. (More after the break.)

Star-divide

The question remains, will the Clippers make any further moves today? We still don't know the extent of Billups injury or whether that injury might result in his removal from the roster. That's not something any of us would want to see, but, if Billups contract is insured, the Clippers MIGHT be required to remove him in order for make a claim against that policy.

I'm on soft ground here, I've no idea what the realities are. If Billups contract IS insured, it's possible that the Clippers might not be the beneficiaries (or might only be partial beneficiaries) of a claim. It might in fact, be the New York Knicks who would insist that Billups be removed from the roster. (Note: There is also a possibilty that Billups might be declared "disabled". Normally that would provide a team with a "Disabled Player Exception". But who would get the exception on an Amnestied player?) Of course Billups contract is guaranteed, and the Clippers have no need to act on his roster spot today, but, if they know they need another player to replace Billups, they might want to make another move on a non-guaranteed player before the end of the day.

The only other non-guaranteed contracts on the team are the rookies, Trey Thompkins or Travis Leslie. We haven't seen much of either player, though there's been more enthusiasm for Thompkins than Leslie. If any of these guys is waived and not selected by another team, they could always return to the Clippers via ten day contracts.

Of course the team could also just hold onto the two players and pay their salaries through the year, but most teams don't do that, and the last man I can remember the Clippers waiving outright was Sam Cassell at the trade deadline, at his request, so he could try and hook on with a contender.

There's also a possibility that the Clippers might be buyers and pick up a player off the waiver wire. Stick with your twitter and see who's let go. I'm thinking it's unlikely there will be much of value out there, a few unproven rookies, a couple of emergency-only or bandaid vets will be all we see.

I read that your allowed to carry 16

After the lockout someone reporte that this year your allowed to carry 16 on your roster and dress 13

I don't see anything about 16 players.

I have this from ESPN: “Between Dec. 25 and Feb. 6, teams will be able to dress and play 13 players instead of the usual 12. After Feb. 6, teams can dress 13 players but only 12 can play.”

I wish the NBA

had a “DL” system.

that is big

you can keep Leslie and Trey back there. If there is foul trouble combined with an injury and you need another big, you don’t have to run the risk of not having another big avail.

JR will look awesome in a clipper uni =)
Obviously the FO has a better idea of our rookies future outlook than we do as fans.

No doubt they’ll hold onto Trey as they seem to be high on him and he does everything right when he’s on the floor. Still surprised Cook gets the nod over him.

I’d like to see them hold onto Leslie. Unless he really doesn’t look good during practice why wouldn’t they hold onto him?

Doubt they'd cut either. Those 2 are cheap contracts
Jones was going to be gone today even before Billups injury

It’ll be interesting to see if Leslie or Thompkins survive the day. Do the Clippers need 2 roster spots for flexibilty or just one? I think they’ll look to bring in a couple of 10 day contract guards the next couple of weeks. Until they can sign JR Smith or make a trade which probably won’t happen til late February into mid-March.
Also wonder how injured Bledsoe still is? If he can’t go for a few more weeks then Leslie is the 4th guard. Or Butler gets some playing time at the 2 and that means more minutes for Gomes. Is Martin ready to get some big minutes while Blake plays some SF? Lots of questions about which way the FO wants to go.

It is just amazing the level of vitriol (mostly coming from Laker fans) some people show on blogs.

The way they talk about Chauncey’s injury and the Clippers is beyond me.

Keep it classy Laker "fans"

They’re just haters. They’re are way more excited for Kobe’s 5th in all-time scoring rather than winning the game. But wait…I’ll finish their argument for them…“16 championships!”

I am a LA resident and will root for local teams regardless. For example, I am a fan

of the LA Galaxy but if Chivas USA make it to the cup final, I’d root for them. It is LA.

So you root for Lakers in the playoffs?
Not playing against the Clippers, why not?
I probably wouldn't mind rooting for them either

I just hate K.Bryant as a person (he’s a great basketball player). I can’t root for that team in any way until he’s gone.

Other than Kobe, Bynum, Fisher, Barnes, Gasol and Mike Brown the Lakers aren’t a bad team to root for.

you forgot MWP
I don't like McRoberts..
I actually like MWP

He’s so entertaining.

Me too.

I wonder what it’s like to view the world through his eyes. He’s absolutely bonkers.

I don’t have anything against the Lakers players on the court. I don’t like Kobe’s personality off the court (Mr. Sourface) and I don’t think he’s a good role model for kids. But seriously, he’s one of the greatest players to play the game, probably second only to Jordan.

It’s just there’s so many so-called Laker “fans” that need to take off the rose colored glasses and learn about basketball. I’m friends with several Laker fans who give credit where credit is due, have followed the team through thick and thin, and know about players outside the team. There’s a lot of fans that just give the Laker fanbase a bad name. But I’m sure if the Clippers won a championship then we’d attract a lot of non-classy “fans” as well.

Everything you said here

+1 to all of it

because it's the f'n lakers man!!!!!!
+1

It’s sleeping with the enemy!

It doesn't work that way

You can’t be a GaLAxy fan then go root for Chivas USA. They represent two different worlds. Chivas USA will always be second tier because they the Chivas Gudalajara is their “mother” club, because they share a name. Yes, they are run independently, but until they do a name-change, they will be just a shadow onf the real Chivas. It’s not welcoming towards non-Latino fans who do not care for it’s “roots”.
The GaLAxy are welcoming to all and aim to be the #1 MLS Club, not a copy of something else. Becuase of what they represent, it’s non-senscial to be a fan of both.

I realize fandom is a piece of cloth at the end of the day, but still.
Similar to Lakers-Clippers….the teams represent different things.

What about Dodgers-Angels?

Serious question, no sarcasm…can you legitimately be a fan of both teams? One is AL, one is NL…I always liked both growing up, although I gravitated more towards the Dodgers.

From the Bay Area

I’ve always been an A’s fan and always hated the Giants. Likewise, I’ve always hated the Angels (as enemies of the A’s) and not really cared one way or another about the Dodgers (enemies of the Giants).

Heh

I was walking around with my Los Angeles Kemp 27 tee today in the Bay Area. I stood out like the plague.

Haha careful

There is so much hate after that one incident with the Giants fan.

Heh yeah no lie

Can’t believe people would get so violent from just sports.

And the Bay Area has gotten ghetto as F

One of the reasons I stay down here haha

Oh yeah?

Around where were you located? Mission District? Castro? ;)

I’m around Ingleside, so it’s not too bad.

Over near SF State when I'm in the city

But normally I’m from the East Bay. Everything everywhere is ghetto now in the Bay. Except Marin. Marin can never be ghetto.

Hahaha

nice, SFSU alum?

Naw my grandpa lives like a mile away.

All of my friends went there though. I ran away to SDSU then transferred to LMU.

People move to Marin tho get Marinated
Yeah, by money.
People say you can't

but I do. I grew up as an Angel fan. I was in the era of Mo Vaughn, Gary D, Salmon, Glause, Erstad, Hasegawa, basically a little before the 02 run when the Angels were still apart of Disney.

But I always had the upmost respect for the Dodgers. Their announcer Scully, Shawn Green, Sheffield, Piazza, Gagne, Lo Duca, I just couldn’t hate the Dodgers.

Until this day, I’ve become a bigger Dodger fan (mainly because I lived in Los Angeles and so it was easier to access games and also because I hate the let goes of guys like Anderson, Glause, Salmon, etc) but I still root for the Angels.

To me, the Angels are still Anaheim, not the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim bullcrap.

And yes, I still miss my Disney logo Angels. :)

The periwinkle uniforms? Those were awesome
By periwinkle I'm assuming you mean the blue with the wings?

yeah those.

First time doing image uploads. Hopefully I’m doing it right.

That's the one!

You can’t hate on Disney. They bought the team, put smart baseball people in charge, developed the farm system and won a world series. Arte Moreno has been trying to buy a title ever since…not that that’s a bad thing.

I don’t know bout Disney putting the smartest people in charge, but I do have to agree that they did develope a great farm system. That’s one thing I’ve always respected about the Angels. Long traditional guys with Tim Salmon, Garret Anderson, Troy Percival, etc. It’s too bad we let those cats go. They made a very big business decision imo, but I guess that is how organizations should be ran.

To add on

which is maybe why I’ve always been a product for the Los Angeles Clippers. Clippers have never been able to sign a top tier free agent. Always seen as the rejects of the NBA. But because of this, the Clippers seemed to rely heavily on their own young products. And again, I love franchises that develope their young players and contend with those players.

I think Disney put Stoneman in charge and hired Scioscia

But I could be wrong

Anderson never did anything after he left the Angels

He wasn’t going to be brought back under any management roles, so why keep him?

And I’ll take Arte’s dedication over McCourt’s shennanigans.

What?!?!

Those were the worst uniforms ever.
They cheapened the look of the franchise.

It's harder nowadays

Thanks to Blogs like this one, non-casual fans are greatly encouraged to “make up their minds” regarding team loyalties. You can be a Fan of both…it’s just easier not to read any team-related sports blogs, where non-netural opinions rule the day.

i have a friend who claims he is a fan of all LA clubs like this . so he claims to be a lakers / clippers fan, kings / ducks fan, dodgers / angels fan.

went to an interleague dodgers / angels game with him and he actually just cheered EVERY time anyone was at bat.

i have had so many arguments with him becuase he never really cheered for the clippers or followed them until now, but he claims he’s a fan. sports fans liek that are terrible. have a backbone, choose a damn team.

I don't see anything wrong with that

I cheered for both sides of the Superbowl. It’s very well possible for someone to just be a fan of the game or the city.

I'm born and raised in LA and I love LA, but I love the Clippers more.

And for that reason alone I pretty much hate all other LA teams. OK, fine, not pretty much, I do hate all other LA teams. I hate the Lakers first and foremost, the Dodgers/Angels, UCLA/USC. Maybe if we got a football team i could try to like them since the Clippers now get some respect in this city. You see, it wasn’t until this season that LAX sold Clippers gear. Growing up I would watch the news and sportscenter for any clipper highlights and the local news even put highschool sports game clips on while just mentioning “and the Clippers lost again.” I guess resentment is a better word than hate, but I grew up resenting all other LA teams because my Clippers never got the respect that they deserved. I can respect people liking other teams and all, but if you are a true diehard Clippers fan, hating the Lakers comes with the territory in my eyes.

I agree with Hans

I hate multi team fan, they basically are saying yeah I want all the fun of watching with none of the concern about caring if one franchise wins or not. Choose a side and stick to it.

Do you dislike women who play for both teams?

depends what they look like

So if someone went to UCLA for undergrad

…and USC for their masters program, would they explode with the weight of having to choose for one side? (I only went for undergrad, but I know a person who did do this.)

I only root for Lakers against Eastern Conference teams and teams with Andre Miller on it
Yeah there were some trashy comments on SSR

By a few losers, but for the most part people seemed sympathetic. I don’t think there’s alot of Billups hate. Or at least there shouldn’t be.

I don't even read that garbage

They will never stop thinking that they got robbed of CP3 by Stern. “It’s the Lakers.”

After the Gasol heist they feel entitled
After July 4, 1776, they feel entitled.
You mean the Kupchak Heist?
I think the worst is when they say, "Everyone wants to come to the Lakers, DUH, of course Blake Griffin will leave."

Riiiiight…

Exactly...as if Blake or CP want to be Lakers after all the trash the Lakers been spewing
Dwight Howard no longer does... neither did Kenyon Martin :)
True

the Clips have all the mojo right now with CP, Blake and yes DJ providing a great nucleus. Also think the coaching trio of VDN, CP, and Chauncy is a good draw. VDN is on a roll right now and making some good late game decisions.

In person

I do the same. I always talk about the Clipper’s current mojo and how we’re finally that much better than the Lakers. I mean, after all these years of not being able to shit talk, we’ve earned it.

The problem is, who knows how long this is really going to last? I would like to think that with Chris Paul and Blake Griffin, these magical feelings will last forever. But history has always shown that even though the Lakers begin to underpreform, they never stay down. And likewise, just because the Clippers start preforming well doesn’t mean we will continue to do well.

This is what worries me. I don’t know whether to trust history or finally believe that the perception has finally changed. Of course the easier thing is to just relax and enjoy the current ride, but this uneasy feeling isn’t easy to swallow.

Worries me too

But I’m not going to let the Laker fans act like it’s some predestined thing. Like Neo, I just don’t believe in all of this fate crap.

Ya, love the Lakers history, but the Pau trade, Kobe’s issues and of course the loss of Chicky baby (r.i.p.) made it a very easy transition to the Clips. If they win the division this year it will be a huge step in the right direction for future years.

I read a comment the other day from a Laker fan saying that they should pick up Jeremy Lin when he becomes a free agent in the off season. That was really annoying because Lakers had the opportunity to pick up off the waivers but didn’t, but now that the Knicks took that risk and he’s shown some level of talent Laker fans think they can steal him away? They are the worst.

Aren’t the Lakers so far over the cap for the next few seasons that they can’t sign any free agents, unless it’s the vet’s minimum? I think Kobe and Pau combined are just under 50 million by themselves.

Theres nothing wrong with that

we usually like to speculate stuff like this also. As long as they aren’t completely absurd (ie Walton/ Artest for Howard), wanting to add a guy like Lin to the roster is alright with me. That’s like us discussing how we want JR Smith on the roster.

They'll go for anything that makes headlines

Jeremy Lin is the hot thing right now, so of course all of them say, “Can the Lakers get him?” Replace his name with every single player that gains attention, ad nausem. Lin’s popularity and current numbers will probably taper off, but I’m glad he’s getting minutes since there’s very few asians in the sport.

Don't worry, Andrew Bynums brittle body will break down soon enough.
Billups

I wonder what his mind is going through. I really feel bad for him. I hope the news is positive. Crossing my fingers!

When can we expect to hear?

At some point today the MRI results are supposed to be out

If it's anything short of "out for the season" (i.e. back for the playoffs, career not over)

I think I’m going to have some celebratory shots…
It’ll deserve it’s own celebration thread…

Hell yeah...

I’ll definitely drink to that!

Ken Berger is working on a waived list on twitter...

Jones, Derrick Caracter (LAL), Josh Davis (Mem), Mickell Gladness (Heat), and Malcolm Thomas (Spurs)

You mean this Derrick Carter?
On April 24, 2011, Caracter, who was in New Orleans for the Lakers’ playoff series against the New Orleans Hornets, was arrested for allegedly assaulting a waitress at an IHOP restaurant.
Dangerous

IHOP waitresses are usually pretty burly. Watch those ACLs Derrick!

I'm not sure whose twitter had it last night

but we have passed the date to claim a disabled player exception (i think it said Jan. 15th or something). So even if the worst news comes regarding Chauncey, we can’t get any extra cap space from it.

I can't find anything about that.

The Larry Coon CBA faq goes into some detail about the Disabled Player Exception, the pertinent facts are that the exception is usually half of the disabled players salary or half the average salary and the contract can be for up to four years. So, should Billups be declared out for the season by an NBA doctor would the Clips get an exception for half the average salary (which should be around the mini-mid level)? Probably not. The NBA Board of Governors hands out DPE’s at their whim. There’s been plenty of times that they’ve refused the request, and only a few that they’ve approved. You can read more here.

Eric Pincus was asked about it in his blog this afternoon

and the disabled player exception would be half his salary, which is 1 million, which is less than the veteran’s minimum so it won’t help the Clippers cause you can’t add it to the veteran’s minimum.

I think that's wrong...

Look at the Coon FAQ: or “half the average salary”.
It’s all moot because it’s unlikely the BOG will approve.

If the Clippers Waive Billups I will be pissed

Even if he can not play he is still valuable in the locker room and on the sideline. Especially for what they paid for him.

Thanks goodness they have so much depth...

…at guard. Chancey was really playing out of position, but he could move over to point guard when Chris Paul was on the bench. They’ll miss him a lot, but they would miss Chris Paul, Blake, or even DJ a lot more. They can still be a great team.

don't forget Caron as someone they'd miss more too seeing his replacement is Ryan Gomes.

Such sad news for such a great character guy and champion.

I like billups

but this is a problem that needed to be addressed. He is old and is too small to make us a championship squad as a starter. If we can move butler to the 2 and find someone who is 6’8 or so and plays good defense I will be happy. We’ve got lots of good guards on the team and I’m looking forward to bledsoe surprising this year. The issue is finding an elite defender to insert into the starting lineup… that person not being jr smith I think we have some work to do. We’ve got plenty of offensive weapons (paul, blake, mo, butler) we need someone who can stop the other team’s best player. A bowen, marion, artest, tony allen, etc gives you that defensive edge that can win you a title. Any suggestions?
