The Back Story:

First meeting of the season. The Magic swept the two game series last season.

The Big Picture:

When Chris Paul first heard about the Clippers' long losing streak in Utah, he went to Ralph Lawler to find out if it was true. Paul vowed to help end that streak (which he did) and then he asked Ralph to inform him whenever the Clippers were up against history in a game. Well, the Clippers nine game losing streak against Orlando is their longest active losing streak against any team. This might be the time to end that streak, as the Clippers are on the rise, while the Magic have some issues. The Clippers got their six game Grammy trip off to a rousing start on Saturday with a big win over Washington, but frankly they'd be wise to play better against Orlando. Sure, the Wizards and the Magic both have Hogwartian names, but Orlando can actually play some as well. After beginning the season 1-4 on the road, the Clippers have now won three straight to even their road record at 4-4, and a couple of those wins came against quality opponents. Chauncey Billups was the difference in Denver, and Paul was difference in Utah, and while those guys have nothing to do with the Clippers nine game losing streak against Orlando, they could have much to do with ending it.

Star-divide

The Antagonist:

The Magic recently suffered through a string of losses that can only be described as embarrassing. First they set a franchise low with 56 points in a 31 point loss to Boston. Then they lost a 27 point lead of their own in losing again to the Celtics a few days later. Then they lost by 26 to New Orleans and by 21 to Indiana. They've since course corrected, and have won three straight, but something is clearly not right in the Magic kingdom. Of course there's the situation with Dwight Howard -- he'll be a free agent after this season, and has made it clear that he is considering going elsewhere to pursue the championship he hasn't won in Orlando (though they did make it to the NBA Finals in 2009). Like Chris Paul's own situation in New Orleans, Howard's pending free agency is a black cloud over the franchise, holding the specter of losing Howard and getting nothing back. Unlike with Paul, Orlando has decided to wait and see what happens. Howard will be a member of the Magic during the All Star Game in Orlando February 26th; but he probably won't by the NBA trade deadline on March 15th. What's strange about the situation is that some things have gone very well in Orlando this season -- Ryan Anderson is having a break out year for instance. But Howard is the whole story right now, and judging by that terrible series of games last week, it must be having some impact.

The Subplots

  • Handling Dwight. Perhaps the single biggest key to the game tonight will be DeAndre Jordan's fouls. Not that Jordan can actually handle Howard by any means, but nobody else on the Clippers can come close. If Jordan picks up early fouls, we might actually have a Solomon Jones sighting, and nobody wants that. Beyond Jordan and Jones, Vinny Del Negro is down to Blake Griffin (and he won't want Blake picking up fouls) or Reggie Evans or Brian Cook against Howard, assuming newest Clipper Kenyon Martin is not an option. The 6'8" Evans is probably the best bet in that case, but it wouldn't be pretty.
  • More on Jordan. DeAndre needs to play a disciplined defensive game tonight. This is not the night to go chasing weak every weak side block. If he does, Howard will kill the Clippers on the offensive glass. DJ needs to stay home on Howard, box him out on rebounds, and keep him pushed away from the basket as much as possible. Few centers in the league have much chance against Howard -- DJ has more hope than most.
  • Anderson versus Griffin. The matchup between Ryan Anderson and Blake Griffin should be fascinating. When Orlando has the ball, Anderson will draw Griffin away from the basket with his three point shooting prowess -- he's shooting 43% from there and leads the league in both attempts (156) and makes (67). On the other end, Griffin will overpower Anderson in the paint, though of course Howard will always be looming to help out.
  • Three point shooting. As is the case almost every year, the Magic are one of the most prolific three point shooting teams in the league. They lead the league in threes made per game at 9.4, and are top five in any other three point statistic you care to mention. But here's what's different this year: it's not just the Magic making a lot of three. The Clippers, believe it or not, are third in the NBA with 7.9 threes made per game. It's been feast or famine from the arc for the Clippers lately -- against Washington, Oklahoma City and in the first Denver game, they were on fire; against Utah and in the second Denver game, they were ice cold. Hopefully they'll be back on fire tonight.
  • The shooters. The challenge against Orlando is to help on Howard, but recover to shooters. In addition to Anderson, J.J. Redick, Hedo Turkoglu and Jason Richardson all take (and make) a lot of threes. For most of the game, the Magic will have a team on the floor consisting of Howard and four shooters. It's what they do.
  • Kenyon Martin. Martin has already joined the team in Orlando and will be with them on the bench tonight. Martin has not yet practiced with the team, and won't play tonight, though he is hoping to play at some point on the road trip, according to the LA Times.
  • Jameer Nelson. The Magic's starting point guard Jameer Nelson has missed the last five games after suffering a concussion. He could be back for this game.
  • Doubling Blake. When the Clippers last played in Orlando, the Magic double Blake Griffin all game. Blake did a good job of passing out of the double teams, but no one on the team could make a shot, so it didn't much help. This is a much better Clippers team, with much better shooters in particular, so the same strategy is not going to work.
  • See you in three weeks. Blake Griffin and Chris Paul will be back here in Orlando in three weeks for the All Star game, where they will once again face off against Dwight Howard.
  • Road trip. The Clippers schedule on this road trip is very interesting. They have six games, three each against teams above and below .500. And they alternate, bad team, good team. They also have rest days between most games, the only exception being prior to the Charlotte game -- but the Bobcats are so bad playing them on a back to back shouldn't matter. Bottom line is the Clippers have every chance to win some games on this trip. They're relatively rested for this one, with Sunday off AND coming off a laugher in DC in which the starters all took the fourth quarter off.

lets play hack a howard
brian cooks gotta be useful for something
Probably just shouting "Hack Howard" from the sideline

No point taking any risks and letting him get on the floor.

tough game

i think DJ will get in foul trouble :(

BUT that means Brian Cookie Crumbs will get some more playing time :)

on serious note, I do think Brian call be very serviceable this game as if we match him up with Superman, it will stretch out Orlandos defense and prevent Big D from jump camping out in the paint creating havoc. would love to see blake and Cookie Crumbs run the old high post/low post game

key to this game will be Chris Paul and our 3 point shooting. Really need Paul to have a strong night as Orlando is tough

would also like to see King Solomon get some TV and use up some of his 6 fouls on Howard

If we matchup Dwight with Cook, we lose full stop
i agree - i don't think we match up very well against Orlando

D-12 is such a presence in the paint defensively. We won’t get a lot of dunks, lobs, and points in the paint in general.
I think the key is our shooters, meaning CP3, Chauncey, and Mo (and dare I say Cookie?).
Also, BG better step out and keep Ryan Andersen honest because he is deadly with those 3 pointers.
I am also worried about JRich causing defensive matchup problems. Foye might play 20+ minutes today if Chauncey can’t guard JRich.

I absolutely love the Anderson/Griffin matchup

Should be super entertaining

Hogwartian?
Wizards and Magic? No?
Heh, your blog, your made up words!!!

Only kidding, like it really. Potter is so popular over here that word will probably be in the English dictionary before long.

Is it wrong that I pronounced it like "martian"?

It just felt natural.

If DJ gets into foul trouble

they Clips will just have to foul Dwight every time he gets the ball in the post. Evans has no problem with that, Jones won’t either (or he’ll get cut immediately). Add Cookie and Thompkins and that’s 24 fouls to split up.

I'm not sure my eyes will be able to handle the possibility of a hack-a-thon

Orlando will foul B.Griffin and the Clippers will foul D.Howard.

If DJ gets in foul trouble

That might be our best chance.

fellow cliplets

i have a feeling this is gonna be Cookie Monsters break out game!!!

if he either makes 2 3’s or 5 fouls, I will buy a beer each for the next 5 posters who respond to this post that attend the clip nations event

lololololololololololol
i will stop calling him Cookie Crumbs and revert to him as Cookie Monster again!
lol stop saying Cliplets!!
"Cliplets" definitely forces us all to embrace our feminine side.

and……………………..5th

technically I'll be 5th since timkempton responded to himself

free beer!

his name is Oatmeal Rasin

get it right

Remember Howard might get into foul trouble himself.

I think this season we have more consistent shooters and more options, so doubling Griffin and he passing out to our perimeter guys should be fine. The Magic have Big Baby and Earl Clark. They have big bodies. Should be a good one.

How to beat Orlando

1. Play Dwight 1 on 1
2. Let Dwight beat you but shut down the other guys
3. Don’t sag off a 3 point shooter
4. NEVER double team

Anyone want to add to this list?

punch SVG in the mouth?
5. Make Duhon have the ball often but closely guarding Hedo
  • This only works in situations such as now when Jameer is out but boy, Duhon is a big pile of toilet – we want him handling that ball – he makes stuff happen (for us!).
I saw a game last week where his handle

made EJ and Eric B. look like Globetrotters.

I watched that game too - I think it was the Indiana game

He came in the game and had about 3/4 turnovers without a couple of minutes. People were stripping him of the ball as though it was going out of fashion.

6. Cookie Crumbs Rides The Pine The Whole Game

Man I can’t wait until we can ship him off this squad

Then his agent (Tim Kempton) will have to find him a D League team to play for......
The Raptors Might Be Interested

They did sign Rasual. Maybe Horton’s is looking to expand their menu and Cookie Crumbs might be just what Toronto is looking for.

I know you said D-League. Not disagreeing with you LOL

5. ???
6. Profit!

Message to DJ

Please note, that very tall man you are playing against tonite is not JaVale McGee!

correct, unlike JaVale

this “other tall man” doesn’t really want to be there

McGee didnt look like he wanted to be there either
either did his mother sitting under the basket.
I'm a little confused about Kenyon Martin/Soloman Jones...

Clips roster is full at fifteen. I assumed, that VDN didn’t put Jones into the game on Saturday that it was because they need to cut Jones and can’t cut an injured player. But can they? Am I wrong about that? If I’m right, why was he even dressed?
Assuming they can’t cut an injured player does VDN even dare put him in the game tonight?

I think they hold onto Jones

until Kenyon Martin is ready to play full minutes, they might need Jones tonight anyways as at the very least he is 6 fouls.

why can't they cut an injured player?

i thought that happens all the time

another reason might be that VDN knows they are going to cut Solomon

so why waste garbage time on him when it was clear at half time that the Clips were going to win this easily. Against the Magic and DH it isn’t too much of stretch that might need.

Jones

If I understand the timing correctly, Jones’ contract becomes fully guaranteed on Friday, but he will need to clear waivers by that time. Which means that he has to be waived by tomorrow, Tuesday, unless the Clippers want to play him for the remainder of the season.

With KMart already signed, and the Clippers making noise about JR, I feel certain that Jones will be gone tomorrow. But this happens to be one game where he can be useful, if only for giving 6 fouls. So I assume he’ll be dressed tonight.

As for the injury thing, I don’t know the exact rules on that. A couple of seasons ago it happened with Kareen Rush, but I think it only applies to ‘major’ injuries (however that might be defined). If Jones twists his ankle, they can still waive him. At any rate, the risk of injury is sufficiently small as to be a non-factor in a situation where he can actually be helpful.

Okay, then another question... will anyone else be waived?

Travis Leslie? They could resign him on a ten day if they felt that was necessary. Doesn’t it make sense to keep the roster at fourteen? Especially since the Clippers are making all this noise about “not being done”.
Hmm… since Jax thinks I’m just annoying people trying to generate page views, maybe there’s some way I could scribble a thousand words on the subject.

would be better off just sending him to the D League to open a spot
If He Is In the D-League

with a Clippers contract he still counts against the 15 limit.

i remember that too (Kareem Rush)

I believe it is for “major” injuries

because I remember the Clippers waiving Fred Jones because he sprained his ankle and the Clippers needed a body (Hassan Adams)…right when the injury to Fred Jones wasn’t so bad….Hassan got waived without every playing a game/practicing and Jones was re-signed

Didn't we cut

Rush after his knee injury a few years ago?

Try some magic brownies man.

Magic Brownies make me giggle.
Which random Magic scrub will have a career night against the Clippers tonight?

Deandre Liggins? Earl Clark?

Penny Hardaway will come out of retirement

And destory CP3 with a quadruple double

Sam I Am should have did that for the Wizards last game to make the game more interesting
Cp3

Will add a penny to his pocket along with his dimes and nickels

Clips can tie the all-time (Clippers, not franchise) record for consecutive road wins tonight.(4)

Excuse me for looking ahead, but if the Clippers can win tonight and in Cleveland.(to tie the franchise record and set the Clipper record) They will be going for the franchise record for consecutive road wins(6) against old buddy FElton.(Oh, how awesome will that be!) FElton(sprained thumb) is expected to miss his second game tonight, but is listed as day to day.

Philly is really tough at home.
Put some cheese wiz on there, and it'll soften up.
Is there a single ingredient on cheese wiz that has less than 15 letters when spelling

I know cheese is not one of them.

Excuse my ignornce

But what is cheese wiz?

A processed fake cheese spread.

As close to cheese as Spam is to organic beef.

It's... horrible.

Even when I was impossibly drunk, eating a Philly Cheesesteak with cheese wiz on it (from Geno’s, one of the most famous places in Philly) was bad enough to sober me right up. A New York street falafel was fine, but one bite of that wiz and I was done for the night. That’s just me though, some (strange) people love it.

You left out the most important point!

It comes in an aerosol can! You SPRAY it on your food. They don’t have this in the mother country?
You Brits would love it on your bangers and mash. Or your blood sausage. Or your fish n chips.

Actually I think we should send some over...

I bet it would go well with, what is it a “Shandy”? Lemonade and bitter? Something like that. The British invented weird food.

Look here, we do have some weird horrible

Foods here but cheese from an aerosol can? That’s a shocker! Bet it tastes like the finest Camonbert!

As Erik O and PV Mike said...

If you go to Philadelphia and into one of the highly touted Cheesesteak joints you go up and you order a “Cheesesteak wit” and they automatically give you a cheesesteak “sammich” wit cheese whiz. But you can also go “witout” or “wit provolone”, (my personal recommendation). If you ask a Philadelphian what’s the difference between a good and bad cheesesteak they will tell you, “It’s allabout da bread.”
Cheesesteak and a beer is fine dining in my book.

Does a Philly cheesesteaks from Philly really taste good?

Is it like a steak sandwich with cheese in it?

They are pretty great

Without the whiz. Philly does em best. Gotta love those food trucks! And for the record, if you go, don’t go to Pat’s. They are kinda elitist. Go to Geno’s!

Oh haha

How did I forget that. I made it sound like velveeta (which is horrible in a different, plastic kind of way).

Good read from Ralph's twitter
Just told CP3 & Chauncey that Clippers have not won in Orlando since 2006. They Love those Challenges. Clippers-Magic @ 4 on Fox Sports West
I love love love that
Nelson will be playing tonight - the question is how many minutes
Jameer Nelson, who has missed the last five games with concussion-like symptoms, is back in the Magic lineup at point guard. Coach Stan Van Gundy’s plan for tonight is for Nelson to play the first six minutes of the first and second quarters, then take it from there.
