Clippers 108 - Wizards 81 - The Longest Journey Begins with a Single Blowout

The Los Angeles Clippers started their six game Grammy road trip in the best possible manner, with a 27 point victory over the hapless Washington Generals Wizards. The Clippers led by 11 after one quarter, by 24 at halftime, and by 34 heading into the fourth. The best part of the easy win is that the starters were able to rest the entire fourth quarter at the beginning of the road trip.

The Clippers were outstanding in the first half, though it must be noted that the Wizards put up little resistance. In fact, the Wizards were so bad, that even though LA was sloppy and unfocused in the third quarter, they still managed to expand the lead another 10 points. As an indication of how bad the Wizards are, the Clippers committed a season high 23 turnovers and shot 35% from the free throw line -- and still finished the game with a season high margin of victory. Usually the Clippers need Chris Paul to score in order to win games -- tonight he was 1 for 9 for 2 points and it didn't matter a bit.

Star-divide

Blake Griffin was outstanding, and looked much like a man playing against boys. He finished the game with a game high 21 points, 11 rebounds and 8 assists in just 32 minutes. Had his presence been required longer, he might well have recorded his second triple double in three career games against the Wizards. He made 10 of 14 field goals, more than half of them dunks.

Blake's BFF DeAndre Jordan had a huge game as well, with 18 points, 11 rebounds and 3 blocked shots in just 33 minutes. DeAndre made 9 of 11 shots. Between the two of them, the young LAC front court put up 39 points, 22 rebounds, 8 assists, and 4 blocked shots, while shooting 76% from the field. Blake's 1 for 7 shooting from the foul line is the only thing that didn't look great.

The Clippers have waited a few years for DeAndre to 'get it' and it's certainly starting to pay off. It was particularly interesting comparing him to JaVale McGee tonight. McGee is one of the few specimens in the league comparable to Jordan -- infinitely long and uncannily athletic for his size, just like DJ. But as bad as Jordan's post defense and rebounding technique have been over the last few years, they are far superior to McGee's. Talk about not getting it. There's a lot of raw physical ability there, but that guy has no idea how to play basketball.

I feel like the Clippers haven't been given enough credit for the incredibly difficult schedule they've played so far this season, and that this game bears that out. The Clippers' record so far this season is often downplayed as having come primarily in home games, or diminished because their overall point differential has been unimpressive. Well, after 20 games this season, their point differential was 0.8, and after 21 it's 2.0, all thanks to the Washington Generals Wizards. There aren't a lot of patsies in the league this year, but there are few, and this is the first time the Clippers have faced one. (Unfortunately, most of them are in the East, so Western Conference teams don't get to see them very often.) The Clippers won-loss record against the league's toughest schedule was plenty impressive in the first 20 games -- point differential only matters if every team has played the same schedule. Furthermore, tough teams play you tough at home or on the road -- and patsies are patsies the whole round over. Just look at Denver's road record and Washington's home record. 'Nuff said.

There's not a lot more to say about this game, other than a quick Brian Cook update. Cook came into the game shooting 16% from the field, just a few percentage points away from the worst shooting season since 1985. He proceeded to miss his first four shots in a matter of minutes. In fact, he was lucky not to be 0 for 5, as another miss was wiped away when he was called for an offensive foul before the shot. As of that point, he was 6 for 41 on the season, less than 15%. I was actually feeling sorry for the guy, because while he's clearly not good, he's also not this bad. He managed to make his next shot and finish the game 1 for 5, and the good news is that when you go into a game shooting 16%, you can shoot 1 for 5 and actually improve your shooting percentage.

The Clippers will have a much more difficult test on Monday in Orlando. The Magic haven't exactly been great lately, but they are light years ahead of the Wizards.

Mo, Chauncey, and CP3 just destroyed the Wizards today

So many lobs.

Great win.....

The impressive thing is that we are now expected to beat “patsies”, whereas in the past and as recent as last season, we never knew what would happen in games like this.

Loving our progress from the first 5-10 games to where we are now as a collective unit

I know the Clippers won by 27 and all but I hope they play better than today for the rest of the road trip

Can’t wait to see KMart on Monday

me too

I thought they played very well in the first half, but they were pretty terrible in the second half. Of course, it’s difficult to stay focused when you’re ahead by 30.

I have heard Washington was bad but I didn't know they were THAT bad

If we played like that against the Raptors or the Nets in the earlier games against “bad” teams in the season we probably would’ve lost… i feel like Washington has NBA level talents but they have as much cohesion as my lunchtime basketball team at work

i doubt kmart will play on monday
Yeah, he's been out since Decemeber, he can't be in game shape.
I read that he'll be with the team on Monday

I heard he’s really out of shape (i read he avg. like only 13 ppg in China whereas the other two former Nuggets were owning the CBA)… will he at least suit up?

He'll be with the team, but is not going to play.

Vinny wants to determine his conditioning level and discuss with him his expected role. He will probably sit out a week or so. Maybe there is a chance that he plays against Charlotte or Dallas or he waits until the road trip is over.

hopefully DJ can outplay Dwight on Monday like he did to McGee
There is a very low chance of that.
Stop.
hammer time
That took me back!
If DJ can keep Howard honest I'll be happy
What a great day

no need to talk about controversial calls, or rotations, or any of that stuff. Really, this is what Satuday’s were meant for. We can bask in the warmth of the camraderie of Clipper Nation today.

the love hack/stomp

should have been a foul/ejection.

Maybe that'll help slow down the Blake Griffin hate train a little bit
It should be a suspension.
And the Lakers were beaten by Utah tonight, in addition to Mike Brown

getting ejected during the game.

Great day for the clipper fans

blow out win, then a Laker loss, a Denver loss to move us back into second place, and Jeremy Lin scored 25 points against NJ and looks like he might can actual shot in the NBA.

Yes, Lin was great

The guy actually has handles…who knew? When you’re a role player in the NBA, there takes a certain amount of Luck to land in a good situation. One where a Coach believes in your skill set and knows how to maximize his potential. Perhaps the Knicks are that place where he can be reliable backup PG. We’ll see, let’s hope so. Not a lot of Asian (American) guards can make it in the NBA.

Great win by the Clips. Thompkins got some burn tonite, which hopefully helps. He’s a young gun that needs some playing time.

I hope Lin will have a good career

He’ll be a good role model for kids to look up to… I’m Asian so it’s nice to see an Asian athlete dominating an all star point guard

My roommate is from China

and he says that Lin is a big deal in China, even though he was born in America they still look at him as a semi native son.

Better watch out.

Next year, he is going to be the All-Star starting PG

interesting since he's Taiwanese

But like everything taiwan related I guess the mainland has to claim ownership.

Interesting he is from Palo Alto

home of “Harvard West” and he ends up going to Harvard. He wanted to go to Stanford, Cal or UCLA but they would only take him as a walk-on so he went to Harvard as they guaranteed him a spot on the team ( no athletic scholarship).

That's awesome.

So he went from barely a starter to an NBA player?

He was captain of the Harvard team

You should check out the video when he was destroying UConn

Harvard, like other Ivy league schools

doesn’t give scholarships(athletic, at least). So nobody on the roster gets a scholarship.

Harvard has a good team this year. Look out for them.
Jeremy Lin

was killing during the summer league back in his rookie year. I though he was a total steal. Was actually surprised that he did not get a lot of playing time in the NBA.

I'm not surprised.

Not dropping the race card, but it’s hard for asian american males to get breaks in sports or any media, no matter how good they are. They have to be exceptionally good. Manny Pacquiao is a good example. I’m sure not many people cared about the Philippines before him. (I say this being half filipino.) Glad that Jeremy Lin made the most of his limited play time and hopefully earns more.

Pacquiao isn't Asian American

this also disqualifies Yao Ming.

Mike Taylor scored 35 points on the knicks... what happened to him?

I liked him.

Not sure

He didn’t have the right coach/situation to make things work. It

You guys think J.R. Smith would be a good pick up

heard the clippers are on his list of teams to choose from

If he came here for the vet min. . .

Clips bench would be incredible, Mo, JR, Kenyon? Thats a champion worthy playoff bench if you ask me.

Couldn't see the game today

but Solomon didn’t get to play? That’s kinda mean. He might get released pretty soon.

Not really mean, just the way it is...

If he gets injured in a game, they can’t cut him.

you think jr smith would choose lakers over clippers?

read that he tweeted to pau gasol he wanted to play in LA.

hope he chooses clippers

As much as I hate him being on the team because of crappy demeanor,

He really must be a nut job to choose the lakers over us. If Chauncey gives the a-ok to go after him, then maybe he’s not as bad as most of us think.

It would be helpful if Chauncey kept it private though.

If he goes out and says JR is a good guy, there will be more serious consideration on him from other teams.

If we go after him

I think it means Chauncey is saying ok.

He has tweeted about many teams (us, Lakers, Knicks, Thunder and others).

Don’t take his tweets too personal.

Remember last week he tweeted how he would look in red, white and blue?

(unless he was talking about a new tattoo). I am not sure how much I like turning into Denver circa 2009. Starting to feel like the “Tattoo Heatles West”

He's talking about the US team.

lol. jk.

I Think DJ Is Noticeably Stronger than Pamela's Son
Yea and like the guys over at the Wizard's blog...

A lot more heart too

Sun Mar 18tth The Pistons Will Be At Staples

I am interested to see how DJ matches up vs Greg Monroe Monroe had 24 and 16 tonight

Before tonight’s game he was averaging a rounded double – double 16 and 9.6 so he is probably somewhere around 16.3 and 9.9 for the season at the moment.

I always liked his game at Georgetown and have somewhat followed his career doings in the NBA with Pistons.

Should be very interesting on Mar 18th

I just feel like guys like Dwight Howard will probably just do this to him if he doesn't work on his game/strength...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GofeqRfHAS4

Hard to believe Dudley was called for a technical on that play!!
She had to sit under the basket and see all the abuse going on between Blake and DJ.

Let’s wait and see how DJ plays in Orlando before we anoit him more than having incredible potential.

I think you guys are suffering from the lack of gifs..

Ok ok ok, here’s one, but this is the only one.

One of the best youtube videos ever
wow washington is TERRIBLE

chris paul probably had the worst shooting night in his career, and we still won by 27……anyway, blakes free throw shooting is getting worse and worse….if we are gonna be contenders, he HAS to get his free throw shooting to a respectable percentage…..

It's never been this bad!!
As bad as Paul played (offensively)

I still felt he had a good game as he can do so many things. He is the ultimate team player/game manager no matter if he scores 25 or 2 points.

also regarding cook...

i remember before the season started, olshey was asked about the team…he mentioned cook, and how he CAN"T miss a shot in practice…..

is that the ultimate jinx or what?

hey if that regressing to mean stuff is real

we are in for some serious Cookie Crumbs.

Anyway, I think VDN tried to snap Cook out of his shooting slump in the 4th. Didn’t work.

Probably the first time I actually have felt sorry for Cookie.

It sounds like his teammates are suppporting him and his struggles.

MILPH highlighted that during the game

The team is really behind Cook and Gomes and trying to have them get some buckets in to help build confidence moving forward. After Cook had the offensive foul Blake was the first one off the bench to encourage him and, from what I remember, when Cook hit the long two everyone on the bench stood in support. Small gestures that go a long way when building camaraderie/confidence.

Lawler also talked about Gomes’ wife on Twitter – yikes.

FT's will cost us down the track

Gotta get better at these quick or it is going to cost us a big game soon.

Well...

its not as if the Clippers don’t have good free throw shooters it just that DJ and Blake are so bad at them it brings the overall down. Career wise the rest of the rotation is good at free throws and most of them save maybe Foye and Butler are shooting them well so far.

I feel bad for Washington and their fans because the team is terrible.

However, I am happy that they are the first team that we play when we get off of this road trip. :)

DJ and McGee are two players that will always be compared to each other. Same draft, similar build, skills and physical abilities. McGee looked better for years (and he has been playing well this season), but DJ made him look silly today. The difference between the two has been their environment.

The Generals Wizards as a whole need to improve their environment/culture. They have had a lot of drama the last couple of years and now have a team full of young knuckleheads. I believe they need to pick a couple of these young players that they want to build around and discard the rest. Wall has the opportunity to be a great pg in this league, but his development is being severely stunted with his current situation. The early years of a player’s career are so crucial and can be the difference maker in a player becoming great or just being a talented player with unfulfilled potential that can’t get it together.

They need leadership and direction. I don’t know who their next coach will be, but he needs to be someone that will discipline them and command respect. Players like Blatche, Young, Lewis and maybe even Crawford aren’t players that they need to build around. Lewis’ time is almost up and will either be traded as an expiring or amnestied next season. They need veterans that know how to play the game as well as players that are team first and more balanced in what they offer. They have a lot of work to do and I really feel for their fans.

But isn't McGee a knucklehead too?

I’d put him in that category.
The saddest thing is seeing the developing failure of John Wall. You gotta put pieces around that guy and you gotta do it soon.

Wall's attitude bothers me

He did a sweet lay up in the second quarter but they were down 15 and it was his first FG. And he was celebrating… . Last season he also did that a few times. He has also harped his teammate quite a few times the last few games.

They have failed to put the right pieces around him but he should have worked a bit more on his jumper and played less meaningless summer games.

Speaking of Wall & team mates

What’s up with Bledsoe? Was he suited up?

wasn't last night

he had an in-practice collision on his surgically repaired knee. Should be fine, but he is playing it safe. This kinda feels like a lost year for him, since we have so many PGs and he had a major injury. But the season is young.

Yeah, he's a knucklehead lol.

You can’t teach that size though and he is putting up good numbers this season. I think they could retain him, but they need some serious veterans on the court and in the locker room to get him focused. He’s going to be a free-agent in the summer and somebody is going to pay him DJ money, because he’s a center.

CP3 and Blake are bowling on ESPN right now..they're pretty good.
I'm watching too!
I missed it
Never mind

just tuned in to see CP3 roll a strike.
