The Back Story:
The Big Picture:
The Clippers have a lot of reasons to want to win this game. They want to end a two game losing streak. They want to avenge an earlier loss to the Nuggets, their worst home loss of the season. They want to maintain their Pacific Division lead over the Lakers, who are suddenly only a game back. And they want to head into the All Star break on a winning note -- they certainly don't want to head into the break on their longest losing streak of the season. What's strange is that although they've lost two straight, it's not like the team has played badly. They've played well enough to win the last two games, but gave the game away against San Antonio, and then failed to execute down the stretch against Golden State. Hopefully the team can put together four solid quarters of basketball, and avoid major lapses, and put away a depleted and struggling Nuggets team.

The Antagonist:
When Denver met the Clippers for the first time this season, the Nuggets were 14-5, in second place in the Western Conference. Beginning with a loss to LA, the Nuggets have won just 4 of their last 14 games. Of course, one of those was a decisive win over the Clippers in LA. The Nuggets may have been overachieving a bit early in the season, but their real problem of late is that they're just beat up. Leading scorer Danilo Gallinari broke a bone in his ankle and has missed the last eight games and will be out until some time after the All Star break. Nene has missed the last five games with a strained calf, and while he could conceivably play against the Clippers, it seems more likely that he'll rest through the break and try to get completely healthy. Ditto for Rudy Fernandez and his sore back, and Ty Lawson, who turned an ankle in Denver's OT win over Minnesota Monday night. But even with all those injuries, the Nuggets managed to take Oklahoma City to overtime before losing over the weekend, so the Clippers had best not take this team lightly. Remember, this is the 'non-star' team, so while losing starters like Gallinari and Nene is certainly a big loss, the Nuggets are deep and have players who can step in and pick up the scoring load.
The Subplots
From the Urban Dictionary:
nugget
In Scotland, a nugget means "idiot" in it's purest term. You can use nugget in both an offensive and friendly context.
Aw, dinnae be a nugget man, lets gan get some drink

Chris Paul is mad for a win

Then he better not blow his wad in the first quarter...
teddygreen - February 22, 2012
I have this same problem.
PV Mike - February 22, 2012
Ryan Gomes and Randy Foye are your starting Wings--We get to see Pigs Fly
teddygreen - February 22, 2012
the Summer of 2010
rears its ugly head again
ClipperChuck - February 22, 2012
Randy Foye, Ryan Gomes, Brian Cook, and VDN. The 2010 off-season was such a drab
teddygreen - February 22, 2012
You need only ask, my child.
Erik O - February 22, 2012
Is showing Gomes as a starter a cut and paste error?
or is Butler injured.
PV Mike - February 22, 2012
D'oh!
How did that even happen? I copied this game preview from the game earlier this month… changed Foye to Gomes…. Was Butler resting his knee about the time of that last game? Can’t figure out why Gomes is in there. I’ll fix it.
Steve Perrin - February 22, 2012
the all star starters are being announced today?
you need an editor!
LJ Hann - February 22, 2012
*Denver is 18-15
Not 14-7
UC.Clipper - February 22, 2012
Crap
Not my best work people. Two cut and paste errors.
Steve Perrin - February 22, 2012
* shakes head *
For shame, Steve.
Erik O - February 22, 2012
Darn
Really hoping for Gomes to start. Darn darn darn.
cliptakular - February 22, 2012
what's wrong
with butler?
old666 - February 22, 2012
Put Miller on his a$$
He has it coming.
thewhiteshadow - February 22, 2012
Gomes AND Foye starting?
This one’s a loss.
82-0 - February 22, 2012 via mobile
I haven't seen anything about Butler being injured
you know something that we don’t SP?
bestclipfan - February 22, 2012
I think the starting lineup has to be a copy and paste issue
would also explain the all star bullet saying that starters have yet to be announced.
bestclipfan - February 22, 2012
Maybe LJ can fix it today at recess.
PV Mike - February 22, 2012
Is it weird that my mind went immediately to the 90's Recess cartooon...
bestclipfan - February 22, 2012
hahahahaha good one PV Mike
oasisman - February 22, 2012
I was asleep when this comment was posted
so I get the last laugh. don’t have class til 9:40 on wednesdays
LJ Hann - February 22, 2012
Do you not have a first or second period class?
My high school had open periods as well although they usually pushed students to have their open period be at the end of the day so that they would leave early as opposed to having people arrive at a later time to school.
bestclipfan - February 22, 2012
Why on God's green Earth would Ryan Gomes be starting an NBA game?
I have to think that VDN would start the Paul/Mo/Foye lineup ahead of starting Gomes.
Anyway, I’m sure it’s an automated typo, unless Caron is hurt and we don’t know about it.
Reading that was a shocking reminder of how thin the Clippers are on the wings.
mikey p - February 22, 2012
Watched Another One Of These All-Star Break Games Last Night
Only in the case of the Spurs – Blazers game Pop intentionally sat his stars and what followed was a Blazer blowout and what looked like a game at Venice Beach.
Clippers need to get up big early so VDN can sit CP3, Blake etc
Anything less than a 15 point win tonight would be disappointing unless CP3, Blake etc don’t play at all.
Buddahfan - February 22, 2012
Not going to happen
Denver Is a very good team. Getting up on them big early likely will not happen. The Clips will be lucky to win tonite.
oasisman - February 22, 2012
Lucky to win tonight?
Nene, Gallo, Lawson, & possibly Rudy aren’t playing tonight. The Wizards would be lucky to win vs. this depleted Denver team, our Clippers will be heavily favored to win tonight. They’re 9.5pt favorites in Vegas. I used to do a little sports betting as recently as last June. The 9.5pts given to the Nuggets sounds like a sucker bet because Vegas knows more more than any of us fans. Most bettors (suckered in by 9.5 given to a good team like the Nuggets) will look at that spread and take Nuggets +9.5. I say Clippers win by 10 tonight.
Valdeezy - February 22, 2012 via mobile
Nuggets are a very good team
Regardless of who they have. This is a must-win game…I like to err on the side of caution.
oasisman - February 22, 2012
that's fine, there's a chance Clippers lose tonight
but I think saying the Clippers would be lucky to win tonight is a little over the top, don’t you think?
Valdeezy - February 22, 2012 via mobile
The Nuggets Have No Team Tonight
No Nene
No Lawson
No Gallo
No Rudy
Buddahfan - February 22, 2012
Clippers should still play with heart and motivation tonight...
NO GIMMES!!
Hengtime81 - February 22, 2012
Especially if Gomes is playing.
mustang6944 - February 22, 2012
Damn, maybe Vinny will go Popovich on us tonite.
PV Mike - February 22, 2012
you are fogetting that the nuggets second unit+2 exra guys
could star for many teams in the league. hell, the only of the nuggets top 12 who wouldn’t start for your rivals (and ours) the lakers, are the big men.
Patrick KB. Nugget - February 22, 2012
*start,
i’m not that deluded to think they are all stars :)
Patrick KB. Nugget - February 22, 2012
Stop being delusional Patrick
You guys have no chance.
MuhahahahaHA!!!!!
cliptakular - February 22, 2012
pride begets the fall
Patrick KB. Nugget - February 22, 2012
If the Clippers
takes the Nuggets lightly tonight because of the missing players…I will be very disappointed. No game in the NBA is ever a gimmie. These are all professional basketball players and any team is capable of winning on any night
DannyDodger - February 22, 2012
interesting how several fans over at denver stiffs
think tha blake showboats because he dunks a lot. a dunk is the hiighest percentage shot in the nba. why would he finesse the ball if he could just smash it on somebody`s head. i smell the stench of jelousy.
cliptakular - February 22, 2012
i don't think he showboats,
to me it isn’t about him, it is about how ridiculous the nba hype machine is in it’s coverage of explosive players like him or the linsanity nonsense. a dunk is still worth 2 points, as are two free throws, but it is the media & david stern that are the cause of my annoyance towards blake, not blake himself (aside from his flopping. he’s too talented to do that crap)
Patrick KB. Nugget - February 22, 2012
Linsanity or Blakesanity
Hard to blame the media. They expose whatever sells. You guys should know from the years Melo was in Denver while the Clippers got no love because we didn’t have a “sexy” player.
cliptakular - February 22, 2012
i'm a pro basketball fan, not a fan of the nba
or the fact that they promote selfish play by isolating individuals over teams and that goes for melo as well. anyone who knows anything about actual 2 way inpact on the game knew that chauncey and nene were more valuable to the nuggets when melo was here, but not according to the media. all they ever said was how melo lifted this team from the doldrums, which post trade, is obviously the opposite of accurate.
same thing is going on for the clippers right now. people who know basketball realize that the engine that makes them viable is chris paul, but all we hear about outside of l.a. (and likely inside) is blake griffen and his dunks.
p.s. blakesanity? really? i’d accept shake & blake or no mistake blake.
personally i just hope that the nuggets employ the rake a blake strategy cause that guy can’t shoot straight.
Patrick KB. Nugget - February 22, 2012
I wasn't serious about blakesanity
cliptakular - February 22, 2012
Is Gomes really starting?
Hengtime81 - February 22, 2012
I hope Martin Mozgov's Andre Miller tonight
and I do not mean dunk on him.
PV Mike - February 22, 2012
I hope Miller gets "Evans-Kaman"ed in an alley before the game
KidJustin - February 22, 2012
squeeze, squeeze
donwoe - February 22, 2012

Just curious you must be a young kid right that just starting liking the clippers?
