Cp3 starts out hot...milph points out cp3 doesn't wear his knee sleeves until 2nd half but is wearing them in the 1st tonight. Not sure what that means. Cp3 got message. He is involved in every score so far. Udoh with 8 early pts in 1st quarter! Foye struggling from field including an awful baseline pass to no one. Udoh outhussling dj on offense. BTW How does Udoh have more offensive game than dj!? Lessons learned: stay up on the 3 pt shooters.

Cp3 is a beast when engaged early!
2nd qtr
Paul stays in.. Vdn needs him and gives bg a breather. Offense sputtering with mo, bled, cp3 martin and reggie early in 3rd. 2 3s in row by paul. Has not missed any shot except for ft. Fnally gets a break at 20 pts. Helps the team climb back in game. No one can stop ellis. how do you not count pauls 3 when fouling dj!?Cp3 shoots Lesson learned:
Refs do not handle on the fly/smart plays like paul's back-to-back 3 pt tries at the end of the half! How can you not allow the shot to count on the 1st foul and NOT call a foul on the 2nd!?
3rd qtr
Missed most of this period, but did catch the worst outlet pass ever by Deandre! Cp3 cooled off this qtr. and seemed tired.
Lesson learned: Bedtime can sometimes take longer than the half-time show!
4th qtr
Blake got his 5th early in 4th. Mo and foye do their best to keep them in game. 6 for 7 from 3pt line. Paul's usual fall away shot not falling probably due to his extended minutes. Griffin and Butler disappear the entire 2nd half. Cp3 early but too many minutes. That last 3 minutes were awful, esp that last minute!...why not foul!? And if you don't foul, how about no open floaters by Robinson!? Lawler's Law holds true again.
Lessons learned: We need a solid starting SG. VDN should stick to his normal set substitutions and minutes.
I think this one hurts more than the Spurs loss, this was a 'winnable' game against a poor defensive team.
Denver is up next. Don't want a losing streak going into the AS.

I don't usually complain about refs, but
The non-call on the 2nd intentional foul on DJ (end of 1st half). At the start of the second half did anyone see the ref explaining the call to CP3? He was indicating that the defender just placed his hands on DJ and pulled them away suddenly (a fake foul). But if you saw the replay he did shove DJ. SO THE REF DID SEE THE FOUL! but saw it wrong. That’s what is frustrating. So inconsistent as well.
Also, the back court violation against Curry. First ref ruled “violation” overturned by second ref, and the replay is inconclusive as to who touched it last. So how does a 2nd ref overturn a call when there was nothing to see?

not even at home games, it’s kinda weird, I’m not saying that these refs are fixing games, but now in the last 2 games teams have gotten chippy against the Clippers and gotten away with it and I guess the Clips are the ones who get caught with their hands in their cookie jar when they attempt to retaliate…

I feel the same way.
It’s like this is going through the growing pains of being a rookie. They have to “earn” their fouls and will have fouls called against them for hardly doing anything. And it feels like the refs are treating this Clippers team the same way. Like we have to somehow “earn” being an elite team, as ridiculous as that sounds.
I just have no other explanation. I don’t watch many other non-Clippers games so can’t say it’s only us getting screwed. But I sure as hell know we are being screwed.

Most one-sided officiated game....
…..in recent memory. Every call I saw was against the Clips. That 3 pointer before the half was one of the smartest plays I’ve ever seen, and refs robbed us of it.

He had, what looked like, 2 solid blocks on Blake that both went for fouls. Other than that, we got screwed. And those fouls hardly made up for the lack of calls we received all night.

I know it’s hard to forget!
It’s games like this that you wonder if its real or not or it’s just refs hold grudges, it seems they do against blake he does complain too much!
We probably wouldn’t be having these conversations about the refs if we won the last 2 games however.

Rebounding was terrible
Yes, LAC got more rebounds, but gave up many the should have collected. Several bounced of their hands. Jordan seemed apathetic about rebounding tonight.
One of Mike Smith’s keys to the game was “dominate the boards”. If they had taken about 5 that were in their hands, it would have been “dominating” and perhaps changed the overall outcome.

GS is a tough place to play in.
There’s no sealing the deal in that building. There’s a reason they had 9 games within 1 point this season. They just happened to get over the hump on us last night.
THe playbook and lack thereof is why this team struggles on offense. They don’t know where to be. Mike Smith mentioned last night that DJ was in Blake’s way so he couldn’t roll to basket. How does he not know where to be. It just seems like the fundamentals is still lost on some of the players.
You cannot depend on CP to close every single game. He burned CP out in the first. No way he should have to play 40 min vs GS.
And Can I rant about VDN second unit choice. How can you have both Kenyon and Evans out there at 4 and 5 with CP, Mo, and either Foye or Caron. They give nothing offensively. PnR don’t work with them because they can’t score. So can’t he leave at least DJ in for first part of 2nd qtr.

DJ hasn't played well for over a month
As I said on the game chat, he has 3 games in double figures in February and they were the two games against Washington and one against Charlotte. He blocks a couple shots, but is out of position for so many more, leading to offensive rebounds. He just looks uninspired and listless. He’s even missed a dunk in the last few consecutive games, and that’s the extent of his range.
I don’t know what is going on, but we need him to anchor the D.

I know it looks easier than it is to get dj those lob dunks but it really does get him going!
it’s kind of sad that that’s what it takes to get him to play inspired basketball. But that’s all he has offensively, I did like that 18 footer he shot the other day.

If Caron has an off game it puts huge pressure on Foye and Mo to score, and if one of them is having an off day as well (as Foye is most of the time) the Clips are in trouble. There is no doubt in my mind Olshey will at least sign a FA swingman to a 10 day contract after the AS break (thats what i read at least) to find another bench guy that can produce while he explores trade options.

Our defense sucks. I know Warriors are a good shooting team, but comon, there were just too many open looks.
A couple possessions should never have gone back to the Warriors such as that pass by Deandre or that time when they got the ball back like three times off of offensive rebounds. You can even throw in the half court pass. Or Griffin’s pass to Foye. Whatever, you name it.
VDN’s rotations were crap! CRAP! I know alot of us thinks that we like that VDN let’s our players play, but theres a reason why we have a coach after all. Might as well not have one if we want our players to run every single play. We NEED a more experience coach pronto. Please Clippers, pursue Larry Brown.
Randy Foye hit some nice shots, but miss plenty too. He looks too much to score, which isn’t a bad thing, but it’s not needed. We don’t want a player who forces up bad shots. Randy Foye is the opposite of what Gomes is. Foye looks to shoot whenever he has the ball whereas Gomes passes up shots, good or bad.
Both these Spurs game and Warrior games were bad. The Spurs were in our hands and the Warriors should have been too.

The Clippers will be fine, it’s only halfway thru the season and 3 days ago we were one inbounds pass away from being the #2 seed in the western conference and now y’all are talking like the season is over and we are gonna get swept in the first round. i understand the roller coaster, i’ve been on it since the Clips came from San Diego. I respect Club O. I’m not saying the sky is falling, I’m just saying that if this team plays like they have the past few games (mental mistakes at the end of games, struggling to come back against a team missing it’s all star, losing to inferior teams) it’s going to make a playoff series win very difficult. And the fact that the West is so deep this year, one bad stretch of games could push the Clips into the bottom of the playoff 8. That is still a better position than we’ve been in since 2006, but shouldn’t we have higher expectations for this team? Shouldn’t we be concerned with bad play and bad execution over a stretch of games?

and i think we may have taken a baby step back since losing Chauncey but that’s to be expected. Since he’s gone down we’ve been 4-4. I think with him we’d be 8-0 considering those losses are to the Cavs, an inbounds pass, a 3point basket chauncey made to beat the Mavs once before, and last night’s debacle. You could look at those 4 and worry, but Club O says hey, we won in Portland, Orlando and Philadelphia (plus home against Washington which shows we learned not to take crappy teams lightly anymore). We’ve had some bad games from our key players, i’d rather they learn this now than in the future so i’m not too worried. At least that’s what i keep saying to myself.

I remember when Chauncey was still playing that people were wanting a real 2 instead of him, saying he puts up too many shots, is undersized, slow, etc. I guess the sentiment is different now? Grass is always greener?
On the bright side here, these have been close games. I’d rather the team lose a close game than a blowout. And I’m not sure about the Lakers surpassing in the standings, since this season they’ve been bad on the road. For some reason they’ve been tough at home, but they aren’t unbeatable. On the last battle of LA match up it was a close one. I’d say the Lakers would have trouble beating someone in a 7 game series more than the Clippers.

Does anyone else feel that we have been playing kind of crap basketball for over a week now?
Club O may agree, bc i feel that we have been in a funk. The difference though, from any other year, is that we are still winning some games (6-3 on the month?). Even last year, there were spells where the clips struggled, and would be lucky to be 3-6 at this point.
I honestly think that this is our team near its worst, so im actually not very worried.

Yeah they've played some pretty terrible basketball
They have trouble finding their groove and if they do, they seem to lose it whenever a timeout is called or the quarter comes to an end. They’ve been playing catchup these last 2 weeks (other than Charlotte or Washington) rather than controlling a lead.

DJ Really Had A Bad Game Last Night
Yea he grabbed 11 rebounds but to he was outscored by Uhoh 19 to 5 which was not good.
Mike as I recall said that the Clippers did not even go over Udoh in their morning scouting report. Nonetheless DJ needs to to play a lot better against opposing Centers especially those not even in the morning scouting report.

After the tip dunk in the 3rd he started wincing and grabbed his left arm. He barely bent it the rest of the game. It was pretty obvious and surprised Milph didn’t notice.

Lesson learned?
I believe CP3’s game was really affected by the two non-calls at the end of 1st half. Although, he was fired up during the halftime interview, it didn’t fire up his game in the 2nd half. I didn’t understand the line up of Kmart, Reggie, Blake, Foye and Mo. I know Caron was having an off night, but VDN needs to play him. Caron’s presense will adjust the opponent’s defense that can help getting Foye and Mo open shots. I think VDN should stick with his core players and not experimenting with lineups. I know Billups is out and I hope this is temporary, but Kmart, Reggie, and Blake in the same lineup doesn’t work.
DJ needs to be more agressive on the boards. Some points during the game, he didn’t box out or jump for the rebound. Don’t know what’s wrong with him, but he needs to hustle. I’m hoping this all-star break the Clippers get the much needed rest. I’m looking for the game tomorrow because I really want this team to get the 20th win before the break.

At least we’re still playing competitive basketball…As much as last minute losses hurt, I would take them over a blowout any day. It’s still early in the season and these can be excellent learning experiences to take into the playoffs. That said I think a statement win over den ever would have me feeling a lot more comfortable going into the break

I think his point is that this Clippers team is still fresh, and they’ve been getting better and better over time. The Billups injury shook them up, but I’m very confident the Clips will be sailing more smoothly as the season goes on.

their is no analysis anymore for these kinda games. when you have the refs playing against you it’s impossible to win. I watch clipper games and expect to see 2 all stars not bullshit fouls that make them sit out the whole game and shots being waived off for no apparent reason and teams delibarately fouling us to have it be a turnover on us. No point to this anymore unless we change something about these refs we are gonna continue losing in this manner, which is unbearable to watch.

Trouble Brewing?
With Billups in the lineup this season the Clippers were 14 – 6
Without him they are just 5 – 5 including losses to the Cavs and Warriors
We all know who the Clippers beat when Billups was playing, so no need to rehash the list here.
However being only 5 – 5 without him is not a good sign at all.

We also played a majority of those games on the road
and three days ago were 5-3. Streaks are streaks and I wouldn’t panic just yet. Let’s see how if/how we bounce back at home on Wed.

The Clipper found themselves in a similar situation. A hot start that season had us as darlings in the NBA, and a month later, we went into a major funk with many saying the hot start was a fluke. . .but they regrouped, and added a shooter off the bench in Vlad Rad, and came back to winning form. There is no doubt a similar move is mandatory to fill the void left by Billups, but dont lose faith. This team will find its groove again soon enough

Last night he was only really at full speed for the first half. The few games before, he showed up in the fourth quarters. We need complete games from him.

Should give the Warriors some credit
They adjusted in the second half and started to trap him to get the ball out of his hands and then run different/larger defenders at him. He didn’t get the same easy looks he did in the first half.

Foye and Gomes need to go
Gomes is just bad all around. Foye is a SG who can’t shoot and has low basketball IQ.

Marvin Williams wants a trade, according to ESPN
He says that he wants a bigger role offensively. I would absolutely love to bring him in from the bench, but would he be okay with that – at least he would be a very important part of the offense when on the floor. He’s only playing 24 mpg at the moment. He could bring size, rebounding and defense. I believe he is quite underrated. He has been shooting very well from 3 point range in this season too

And T-Mac wants more minutes too. I think Marvin Williams might be a good fit with the Clippers. Caron can switch to SG and Marvin can play SF. Or vice versa.

Thanks. I am not as good recapologist as JRaffo, LJ, so I stick to what I know best. Quick summaries of each quarter seem to work. I was hoping the citizenry would forgive the brief recap as opposed to the manifestos (anything more than 500 words to me is a manifesto!) we all love and cherish on this site!

It's not a bad thing
Steve, Raffo, and I tend to get caught up in the 1,500’s or higher in word count.
I even wrote a piece about refs that I thought would be around 500 and it ended up being well over 1,250. Direct, brief postings are a refreshing chage of pace.
BTW, how did you do that chart for the GameThread? I want to make those!

this game had so many dumb plays in it.
my friends and i were sitting there at halftime thinking, we are so lucky to not be down by 10.
cp3 and mo williams, probably single handedly kept the game close . i have to hand it to the warriors, they played good defense and made it so everything turned into 1 on 1 type stuff, and our bigs could not get anything going inthe paint other than some 1 on 1 post up hook shot type deals from blake.
but yeah there were some really dumb plays. like reggie evans trying to make a driving layup on a fast break and dribbling it up court. etc. even in the first quarter cp3 and dj went for what i’ve call an absolutely absurd alley opp attempt. and i think maybe they underestimated the warriors. udoh played really well though. still dont get why the warriors dont start him.

A Warrior player (I forget who) stepped into the lane. Mo reacted. It was like a false start/offsides call in football: was the defensive player reacting to a flinch, or did the defensive player cause the flinch.

Warriors played well
They shot the lights out even when defended (and fouled) ie Monta’s 4pt. play. Our D gave them a lot of open shots and they hit em more often than not it seemed (I haven’t looked at the game’s fg%). It felt like they couldn’t miss last night. GSW played better than their record would indicate. It was a tough game and we couldn’t close it out in the end. I’m hoping the team learns from these type of games. We definitely need more set plays. It seems like all we do is PnR and post BG up. When the PnR doesn’t get us a good shot right away, it becomes playground ball & CP has to find a way for us to score without great movement from the rest of the Clips.
We shouldn’t panic, we’re only midway through the season. I think we’ll still finish ahead of the Lakers.

In place of what should have been a play diagram there were a bunch of scribble marks. Then as he told the guys what to do he kept feverishly scribbling back and forth on the board with out ever showing an actual play…
