My kids have their birthdays within five days of each other in February. Invariably, we end up with two parties on the one weekend between their actual birthdays, and that happened to be this weekend. They're a little older now, and so that parties have changed some, but in the end, ClipperZoe had a party and sleepover on Friday, and then I took ClipperMax and his friends to his first rock (Cake at the Palladium -- very cool) on Saturday night, followed by another sleepover of course. Sunday was spent recovering.
So if I seemed a little absent over the weekend, that's why.

I missed some excitement I realize. Let's start with the blog-side of things. As the blog has grown, I've obviously added some new authors to help with the writing workload. However, I've remained the final authority on things like warning or banning commenters for bad behavior. As you all probably realize, I've maintained a relatively laissez-faire attitude over the years, letting situations work themselves out and allowing the community to police itself. Other than obvious spam, I've only banned one user until very recently. But we never had to deal with a situation like we had this weekend.
For those who were not on the post-game thread (or a few other places) on Saturday, I won't go into the very ugly details. Suffice it to say that citizen LJ Hann was in a difficult position, which he handled admirably. He texted me some time after midnight, but I managed to sleep through my cell phone. With no other choice, he hid the recap post he had written. When I got the message Sunday morning, I deleted the offensive content, banned the user responsible, and reposted the recap.
I want to point out that the user in question was not, as far as I know, a Blazers fan as he was described on the thread. He had been a member of Blazersedge and other blogs, but had already been banned at Blazersedge before this incident. I should also say that I had banned a different user, created from the same IP address, a few days before, for less objectionable though no less obnoxious behavior. This guy was a troll, plain and simple, with no agenda other than to cause trouble. You should also know that steps are being taken to ban the individual AND the IP address network wide a SBNation -- an action that is not taken lightly, but is appropriate in this case.
In the aftermath of this incident, I have given additional authority to several members of the community to police the comments, to delete content and to warn and ban users in extreme cases.
But there was some other inappropriate activity on Saturday that led to another ban that I want to talk about as well.
Ryan Gomes made a poor decision on his inbounds pass at the end of regulation. Just as Chris Paul made a poor decision a split second later, and the Clippers as a team made a poor decision to keep switching the Tony Parker - Tim Duncan pick and roll. It happens.
Clips Nation is an appropriate forum to blow off some steam, to vent a little, to express your disappointment and frustration after a tough loss. But it should never get personal. This blog is by no means a place to organize flame campaigns targeting players directly via their twitter account or anywhere else. If you tweet your venom at a player and I don't know about it, there's nothing I can do. If you drag this blog into that situation, you are way over the line, and such behavior will not be tolerated.
I want to commend the many citizens on here who made that exact point in the comments and in the FanPosts. Thank you for being the types of citizens Clips Nation can be proud of. I know that things got ugly on Twitter -- I'm gratified that it was far more civil on Clips Nation, even if there were some overreactions.
As for the game itself, obviously it was a very difficult loss. Like many of you no doubt, I stood watching the play in disbelief. It all happened so fast, but it nonetheless felt like slow motion to me. It was surreal. I knew when the ball left Gomes' hands that the pass was thrown too soon (or too late, if you prefer). But there's no one person on whom to pin this loss. Why did Gomes throw that ball at that moment? Was the play drawn up for Paul to go into the backcourt? Why did Paul throw the ball to Gary Neal - literally the worst possible place he could throw the ball? He could hang onto the ball and take the violation. He could throw it back into the front court, away from his own basket. He could throw it out of bounds. And why did Randy Foye back off of Neal rather than closing him out immediately? Only a three hurt the Clippers in that situation, and they handed an uncontested one to San Antonio's best shooter.
That one play was a disaster -- I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like it -- but no one play loses a game. Not to mention that the Clippers would not have been in a position to ice the game had Gary Neal not committed an equally unforced error just seconds before. For that matter, maybe we should blame Kenyon Martin for the loss. When Randy Foye dove on the loose ball, Martin immediately called timeout -- but Foye successfully got the ball to Paul, and the Spurs would have been forced to foul Paul then had Martin not been quite so quick-witted. A thousand mistakes go into every loss. As a team, hopefully the Clippers will learn from their mistakes. As fans, all we can do is agonize over them.

Well said.......
Though I was reading the game thread during the games, I wasn’t involved and adding any comments or discussion posts. However I was appalled at some of the language and behavior directed towards Ryan Gomes.
We are better than that and don’t need to stoop to such immature levels.
Natedog1977 - February 20, 2012
Thank you Steve
for keeping this an high quality blog. There’s no need for that kind of hooligan talk.
zac4president - February 20, 2012
Thanks for addressing this head-on, Steve
I have frequented this blog (mostly silently) pretty much since it’s existence, not only because of the critically objective nature and otherwise high quality of the editorial content, but also because of the generally insightful interaction of the “citizenship” – IMHO a significant step up from other such interactive communities. I was surprised and disappointed with the “personal flame” direction that some of the post-game comments took, as it seemed completely inconsistent with the general tone around here. I appreciate you taking the time to post regarding this issue and use the opportunity to “level set” the direction that you wish the blog to continue moving in.

Great post.

couldn't agree more
I cant say I like Gomes in any way (as a player) but some of the stuff people were saying to him on twitter was just disgraceful. I think all the true clipper fans should get to twitter to encourage him because its clear his confidence is continually dropping. If he sees clippernation is behind him, we could possibly get him to the average player he was before he came to the clippers.
Fckyeahblakegriffin - February 20, 2012
I have to say i am guilt
I think i overreacted with some of the stuff i said… i guess its because you get a taste of winning and then you lose a game the way they did just brings back the old memories of losing in ways that are inexplicable. So i definitely overreacted and i apologize for it because i am not that type of fan. Ive always liked gomes and thought he was a great addition for us. I think we need to encourage him like we are encouraging foye after a great game. So heres to gomes getting his confidence and having my support!
My dukie twinkles - February 20, 2012
Thanks for apologizing...
Maybe you should tweet @GotGomes and apologize to him as well.
Steve Perrin - February 20, 2012
Unfortunately i do not have a twitter.
My dukie twinkles - February 20, 2012
(they're free)
Erik O - February 20, 2012
Absolutely agree
The game was just crazy, we were even close to getting the win with CP in the last second before OT. I really didn’t get the personal attacks towards Gomes, it was just way over the line, as it has been mentioned several times. Even though it was so amazingly disappointing, you got to be human and realize that this was one game, which taught us one gigantic lesson, and that a basketball game is no reason to be flaming a person and his family. I really do believe the guys were as heartbroken as we were, when the game finished, and that they are focused and eager to come out and play a great game tonight in Oakland. Remember what we have been through, and what we are experiencing at this time.
Pawn - February 20, 2012
I seriously considered not returning to the site for a few weeks
yes it was soul-crushing and Gomes isn’t coming close to earning his pay-check but come on, it was one f***ing regular season game.
I expect more of Clipper fans.
BelgianClipper - February 20, 2012
i think the ones that overreacted were probably bandwagon fans..........
the nation have always keep things classy….. lets not get too spoiled now….. you lose you learn you admit your wrong doing and you move on to the next game…….
LAClippers1983 - February 20, 2012
I must admit that i overreacted
but by no means am i a bandwagon fan…like i said you get tired of losing all the time and then you get a gift and your winning all of a sudden and people still say your team sucks and after a lose like that you hear oh its the same old clippers and this and that and you dont want to go back to that. But i cleared my head and felt bad because i love all my clippers, past or present, regardless (except Andre Miller!) and i know we do not have that type of fan base. We should all stick together.
My dukie twinkles - February 20, 2012
Andre Miller
Seriously, F that guy.
Erik O - February 20, 2012
I really hate that guy lol
My dukie twinkles - February 20, 2012
He sucked in crucial times against the Thunder yesterday.
PV Mike - February 20, 2012
Ruining my fantasy team
And therefore my life.
Erik O - February 20, 2012
A Clipper fan with Andre Miller on his fantasy team?
You might as well add Elton Brand, Raja Bell, and Daniel Ewing on that team and call it “The Dreamcrushers”.
82-0 - February 20, 2012
I think it was in the Clips Nation league
So he fell really far and I wanted to win, so i bit the bullet. Obviously i was fooled (again) by his “skill”.
Erik O - February 20, 2012
HEY! I still like Elton!
Xfactor26 - February 20, 2012
wha?
LJ Hann - February 20, 2012
I couldn't draft him.
Went against all my principles.
Chris McD - February 21, 2012
I don't really play to win
if y’all hadn’t gathered that from my record… I feel bad for anyone who actually managed to be worse than me.
Im pretty smart at basketball, and know nothing bout football, but fantasy fball is definately my strong area over fantasy bball.
LJ Hann - February 21, 2012
Andre Miller DA BEST

Nature of blogs
When a blog is popular it will always have a few bad apples. I am glad to see this blog that I have read for years but very rarely pst to has chosen to attempt to keep the bad apples away
itcouldbeworse - February 20, 2012
Something happened?
I usually don’t even read the blog until the work week comes up. I’m glad I missed out on this. I never participate in nor read game threads, but I do like the post game recaps. It’s unfortunate that Gomes had to be in a tough situation only to get attacked by flamers yet again. I’ve always vouched for the guy and he had some admirable moments last season. It really sucks how terrible he’s been playing this year. Hopefully he’ll be able to bounce back.
Chris McD - February 20, 2012
gomes is still at fault nothing changes he desserved the heat he took
KillaClip - February 20, 2012 via mobile
IMO
He deserves basketball-related heat. But people attacked him on twitter with death threats, and threatened his family. That’s crossing a moral line.
LJ Hann - February 20, 2012
Why put all the blame on Gomes?
The coaching staff and CP3 deserve more of the blame than Gomes, IMO. It’s the coaching staff’s fault because the guys should’ve all been on the same page, in regards whether to inbound into the back court. It’s CP3’s fault for having the brain fart and tossing the ball directly to the opponent’s three-point shooter. Even CP3 said it was his fault.
The point is, everyone sure has the right to be pissed off, but no way can you put it on a single person.
hadouken! - February 20, 2012
the above was meant as a reply to KillaClip
hadouken! - February 20, 2012
Yes.
There’s nothing wrong with venting about the fact that Gomes is being paid handsomely yet can’t even throw a decent inbound pass… but leave his family out of it.
82-0 - February 20, 2012
Gomes in no way deserves for people to threaten his wife and daughter for something that happened in a game.
Nobody deserves that. It’s just a game, there’s 66 regular season games this year and more in the playoffs. It’s just a game. It’s fine to say he sucks and all that, but to bring in 2 people who had nothing to do with the game is completely and utterly immoral and wrong.
chrisd - February 20, 2012
There's an obvious line here
anyone who, like myself, used the gamethreads to be angry at Gomes/VDN/CP3 for the play is clear; we all do it, that’s why forums like this exist.
The people, however, who attacked him directly on twitter have some explaining to do. Especially people who went further than the game, threatening his life, and those of his wife and daugher. Some told him to just go and commit suicide… why? There’s no point in that kind of conduct.
LJ Hann - February 20, 2012
yes, i overreacted a bit
but never would i threaten his life or the life of his family. I was upset that he had a basketball mistake but never does that mean we should go on to the mans twitter and cause him this type of pain. Its a long season and we should stick together. Not inflict pain on our team mates because i bet that all his team mates feel bad for him and i bet they will stick up for Ryan because that is the definition of a team.
My dukie twinkles - February 20, 2012
All i can say is i can't wait for tonight's game.
chrisd - February 20, 2012

Revenge of the Gomes
Directed by Quentin Tarantino
Erik O - February 20, 2012
Sorry but I hope he get's Zero PT Tonight.
HVYDRT007 - February 20, 2012
he will probably play
I don’t expect this game to be close enough for VDN to tighten the rotation
LJ Hann - February 20, 2012
Finger's Crossed
That we are up 20+ when he makes a appearance.
I like the dude and he is Super Good Guy and all the Hate is over the top but his game is down right Awful to say the least..
HVYDRT007 - February 20, 2012
Proper nouns are like crack. Be careful.
Erik O - February 20, 2012
I expect him to be in the normal rotation
I am sure VDN knows what is going on since Saturday and will try to show he has not lost complete confidence in him.
PV Mike - February 20, 2012
I usually don't tape games but we were invited to a birthday party on Saturday at noon
so I decided to set up my DVR to record the game. Of course, being the DVR newb that I am, I programmed it to record just the 2.5 hours alotted to “NBA Basketball – Spurs vs Clippers” on the schedule.
So I come back home from the party and watch the game and thoroughly enjoy the Clips fighting back and take the lead — all the way up to the Gary Neal turnover before the recording stopped. Milph were saying what a great win against the hottest team in the league, and it was effectively game over. So I turned off the TV and said let me check out what the final score was. Then I see Spurs win by 3 in OT. WTF?!
hadouken! - February 20, 2012
that's why you always add time
I normally add an hour, just because I have had a few experiences where I lose the end of a game even adding 30 minutes. Always expext 2OT
LJ Hann - February 20, 2012
I missed this game, but it must have been really bad.
Gomes always gets bashed, but this must have taken the cake. I don’t even know how to use twitter. These people with the death threats must be former laker fans.
tenkaistar - February 20, 2012
+1 must be Fakers fans that have converted over to the LAC
Either way it had to be Bandwagons
HVYDRT007 - February 20, 2012
I feel bad for Gomes
He’s just suffering from lack of confidence. I know he’s not as bad as he has been this year. I honestly thought he’d be a servicable back up sf. I hope he gets it back, if he figures it out, I think he can really help us. I also think it’s extremely immature of people to send him threats on him and get into arguements with his wifeon twitter . It’s just not right. I missed all the troll comments as well this weekend. No matter how emotional we get, in the end basketball is just a game and sometimes we have to just accept that there is nothing we, as fans, can do.
DannyDodger - February 20, 2012
Thanks Steve - Ryan Gomes Backlash Was Horrifying
Keep it classy San Diego.
moKi - February 20, 2012
I overreacted and I feel bad about it.
I didn’t tweet Gomes anything, I was just in a serious temper tantrum for like the rest of the day. Like what ClippersUK said a while ago “Keep your chin up. You’re a goddamn Clipper fan…. We’ve been through worse than this. We will overcome this. Watch the guys go!” Yea this loss hurts, but there’s a lot more games left to play.. We gotta keep our heads up high and move on.
ClipperBEAST - February 20, 2012
i know how you feel sir
My dukie twinkles - February 20, 2012
Watch out for CP tonight
I have the feeling that he will want to torch GS and move on. In fact the whole team may be in beast mode after the last game.
ps: I had a tough time reading the unfortunate posts on the game thread too. Thanks guys for owning up and moving on, lets win it tonight.
rouse77 - February 20, 2012
Probably my favorite blog on here so far
Even more so than the blog that lead me to this site. The one that was written after our beloved Clippers beat the Lakers in our 1st matchup of our regular season. I love what some people have written on here in reply to the blog. We are Clipper fans and have been through similar type losses. Why were some of us acting like spoiled brats after a tough loss? Some going as far as death threats, although I don’t think anyone here were guilty of such immature behavior. Gomes, Paul, VDN, Foye, Martin and the rest of the team need to be held accountable for the loss, not 1 player. It’s a team game, and we are a fan of the Clippers. The whole team..not a fan of just Blake, Paul, DJ, Reggie, Kmart, Mo and hate the rest who don’t matter. I feel bad for Gomes and his family. As fans, I feel we should show him full support and encouragement. Beating him down w/ callous words is counterproductive. I hope to see him play tonight. I’ll be cheering for him more than any other Clipper for the rest of the season. I agree, he’s overpaid for what he’s done for the team thus far this season. Fact still remains that he’s a Clipper, and I’m a Clipper fan. So support & fanhood is what I’m going to give him.
With most of us having been long suffering Clipper fans, we should’ve developed somewhat of an immunity in regards to losses like Saturday’s. I was as upset about the loss as all of you were. I didn’t foresee any results that would benefit me if I reacted towards the loss w/ a negative attitude. I just hoped the team would learn from it and couldn’t wait for tonight’s game, which starts in about an hr & 40mins.
Let’s Go Clippers!
Valdeezy - February 20, 2012 via mobile
well said sir!
although i overreacted i go back and i look at alot of things… Vinny putting in ryan in that situations, why not a butler? What if CP would have caught the ball? would they have called it? with as bad as the officiating has been this year you never know. Then i think maybe he should have caught it and if they caught it we could set up our D. Then i think why didnt Foye run up and defend he looked like he was guarding so that neal wouldnt blow by him… when he should have just let him if thats the cause because we would still be up by one. Just things like that cant just blame it on ryan and we just gotta move on and not dwell on a lose cause im sure the warriors do not care about us losing and are sure as hell going to come after us with full force at home.
LETS GO CLIPPERS!!!
My dukie twinkles - February 20, 2012
Thanks brotha
I’m glad you were able to go back and analyze the whole situation. More importantly, I’m glad that it seems like you may have learned from what you say was an overreaction on your part.
Valdeezy - February 20, 2012 via mobile
Yea man
I love my clippers… every person on the team because this is a team that i love and i cant let my emotions get the better of me in those situations.
LETS GO CLIPPERS!!!
My dukie twinkles - February 20, 2012
Thank god I didn't participate on Saturday's thread!
agolden - February 20, 2012
the thread wasn't that bad until the end
the recap was the worst until steve cleaned it up
LJ Hann - February 20, 2012
good
I’m kinda surprised how all these haters were motivated to go on Clips Nation.
Bad loss, but the final score was much better than I predicted.
agolden - February 20, 2012
*dissapointing loss

When he play on the next home game. To build his confidence.
Then if he still suck, Boo him..jk
