The Back Story:
The Big Picture:
There is no hotter team in the NBA right now than the Los Angeles Clippers. Philadelphia shares their four game winning streak, but all of Philly's wins came at home, with two of them coming against the two worst teams in the league. The Clippers have beaten four teams with a combined winning percentage of .643, with two of those wins coming on the road. LA has yet another challenge tonight, facing a Denver team looking to avenge a loss from just four days ago. The Clippers have the advantage of playing at home, but are also playing the second game of a back to back. Still, as well as LA has played at home this season, I can't imagine that energy is going to be a big problem. Chris Paul has been playing like an MVP since fully recovering from his hamstring injury (still, no chants, per Another Son of Mike Smith). He's coming off of games of 26 points/14 assists and 34 points/11 assists. More importantly, he has the ability to get points in crunch time of close games. The team had also been filling it up from outside until last night in Utah. After a 5 for 22 night, hopefully their three point range will return tonight. Three pointers were a major factor in the first win over Denver, as the Clippers sank 14 of them.

The Antagonist:
Denver was on a roll of their own until they ran into the Clippers. They had won six in a row before losing to LA on Sunday, then lost in Memphis on Tuesday. In both games the Nuggets lost double digit fourth quarter leads, and held the lead in the final seconds. So the Nuggets will be looking to right their ship, while at the same time exacting a little revenge. Because Denver probably feels a little cheated from that last game -- the Clippers were on fire from deep, and some crucial calls down the stretch went LA's way as well. The Nuggets, as we noted last time, are a team without a traditional star, so it's difficult to know who you have to stop. Any one of six or seven guys are capable of having a big game.
The Subplots
From the Urban Dictionary:
nugget
In Scotland, a nugget means "idiot" in it's purest term. You can use nugget in both an offensive and friendly context.
Aw, dinnae be a nugget man, lets gan get some drink

Big game, the Nuggets are now behind the Clippers in the conference standings so this could half playoff seeding implications.
ClipperChuck - February 2, 2012
Also...
isn’t it nice that the season isn’t over by February for once?
ClipperChuck - February 2, 2012
NOOO!!
Gomes is in the lineup. Why can’t he be the one with sore back?
Lobmeister - February 2, 2012 via mobile
Butler was a late scratch
so no idea how severe the back problem is. Maybe it flared up during warm ups. But kind of like Paul’s hamstring the back is pretty tricky and can linger for awhile.
Clips will need Gomes to do something tonight as Gallo is pretty good and even Corey Brewer and Al Harrington are playing well this year.
ClipperChuck - February 2, 2012
As much as we need Butler, if his back is still sore I say sit him. He'd get a few more days rest
cause he probably wouldn’t be needed to beat Washington on Saturday. Plus our boy Kenyon can see the hole we have and want to join us. But i really do want to win this. A 5 game win streak against these 4 opponents would be freaking amazing. And yeah, if we end up with a tied record with Denver this game is huge for playoff seeding.
chrisd - February 2, 2012
Just to be clear
The lineup I list is my best guess. It’s not the official lineup, which won’t be available until about 7:15. I have no idea at this point how Butler is feeling or if he will play. Fingers crossed.
At any rate, I usually list the starters from the most recent game unless I have definite information that something has changed. Without definitive information that Butler is back, I’m listing Gomes as the starter. That’s all.
Steve Perrin - February 2, 2012
thank god for that.
ThaFoX - February 2, 2012 via Android app
Also worth mentioning although I don't know much it matters since Denver is so deep:
This is the first of the Nuggets back-to-back-to-back games. Oddly enough they fly home after the game to play the Lakers in Denver tomorrow. Then fly and play in Portland on Saturday.
chrisd - February 2, 2012
but on my nuggets side is the fact that:
they have experienced a b-b-b (lakers/lakers/bucks) already as well as won a 5 game road series in 7 nights. that’s why i was bent out of shape last time my nuggs played and your writer dissed the nuggets schedule so far.
Patrick KB. Nugget - February 2, 2012
What he was referring to was strength of schedule as in the opponents record you guys have played.
You had played Sacramento twice, New Orleans twice, NJ, Wizards, Raptors. Clearly we know we have been lucky in having the fewest amount of games so our team has had more practice to learn how to play together. But the opponents we had played had the highest winning percentage any team had faced.
chrisd - February 2, 2012
I'm with you on that Chrisd!
ThaFoX - February 2, 2012 via Android app
my last clipper game in la/america til christmas time

hopefully they send me off happy

I will be at this game section 216!
shay - February 2, 2012
im two sections over in 218
Guyver423 - February 2, 2012
both teams are top four (home court) teams in the play offs for sure, and it promises to be a great game.
as a nuggets fan i’ll reluctantly admit that the starting 5 in la is better, but the nuggets well rounded bench (if g.k. is not too stubborn to utilize his big men) sways the overall "talent" heavily in the nuggets favor.
i believe griffen gets far too many touches. that team would be best served only going to him on pick and rolls and letting he and deandre get their points solely on dunks (which are still only worth 2 points contrary to popular sentiment). while i realize that in order for him to develop an outside jumper, which will eventually make him unguardable, you can’t tell him not to shoot from the outside, but every outside jumper he takes tonight will be met with a clap of my hands.
how do the nuggets beat the clipps?
a) chauncey can’t be shooting unconscious like he did in denver.
b) they need to attack both griffen and deandre. they are literally the only front court the clipps have while the nuggets have nene, timo, kosta, bird, al & faried. get either of their bigs in foul trouble and it ends any threat of cp3 utilizing the pik and roll an entire fourth quarter the way he did in denver. just hedge on screens and double him and rotate toward the three point shooters. i don’t mind leaving reggie evans open do you?
c) if the nuggets can’t manage to get the starting front court in foul trouble by the final 5 minutes of the game, and it is close, it is time to play hack a blake/jordan utilizing our considerable front court depth. not only does it get in blake’s head when he is the "hittee" now and then, but i’ll take 1 point over the almost assured 2 points when cp3 runs the pick and roll. scoring more than 1 point per possession should be no problem for the nuggets against the gambling defense of the clip’s down the stretch.
Patrick KB. Nugget - February 2, 2012
Should be a great game.
If Caron isn’t able to go then we are in big trouble. Our starting 5 is a lot better, but clearly the drop-off from Mo Williams (who i think is better than anyone on your bench) to our next best bench player (Foye?) is a huge drop-off. It’s even bigger from Foye than to the next person (Gomes? Evans?). I’m expecting a lot of 3 guard line-up in this game, especially if Caron can’t go.
If you get Griffin and DJ in foul trouble, yes, it will be tough. Hopefully your boy Kenyon will decide to join our team and help out up front. Hopefully Chauncey will make his shots since he was missing them last night, same goes for most everyone not named CP3 and Griffin.
I kindly disagree with you on Griffin getting too many touches and should only score on dunks. Yes he’s been taking the long 2 a bit too much instead of going inside, but he’s getting better, at least when he decides quickly that he wants to shoot it instead of pausing.
chrisd - February 2, 2012
i have mo and deandre on my fantasy squad.
it pained me to have to bench them today vs. my nuggies. having said that, mo is NOT a better player than andre miller. they are seperate but equal, and the same could be said for al, and the fact of the matter is that you guys basically have mo and… well mo coming off the bench. i’ll take andre, al, brewer, rudy and kosta. (not a big bird man fan)
my opinion on griffen, is that it is the right thing to allow him to shoot those outside jumpers. if i were you guys i would too cause he needs to develop there, but it is clearly in the opponents best interest when he does take them.
Patrick KB. Nugget - February 2, 2012
Hack strategy
Does Karl have a history of playing the hack strategy? I can’t think of instances. He strikes me as kind of old school — I’m not sure he’d do that.
Steve Perrin - February 2, 2012
you are quite right
i love george to death but he is the star of this team and he is far too stubborn to ever do this.
Patrick KB. Nugget - February 2, 2012
Gomes
The guy is really a 3/4 Tweener. He actually has some post moves that were utilized before joining the Clips. He’s used them a few times this yr. He’s not shooting well, but 0-3 is better than 0-10 with 4 TOs. It takes a certain amount of luck to be as unproductive as he was in Utah. With Gomes in his current state, the 3 PG lineup is utilzed a lot. Against Denver, which have Lawson and Miller together much of the time, the 3 PGs plus Foye will definitely get a lot of burn tonite. I expect a basket or two from Gomes tonite. It’s just not possible being as unproductive as yesterday on Multiple games.
oasisman - February 2, 2012
Yea, we’re gonna really need him to guard Gallinari. If we have that 3 guard line up while Gallinari is playing SF, we’re gonna be in a lot of trouble.
DannyDodger - February 2, 2012
i doubt it cause stubborn "evil george" as we nuggets fans call g.k. now that he has a ghoatee,
is in love with small ball himself, and the clippers are the one team in the league with more quality p.g. depth than my nuggets. he’ll have gallo play the 4 much of the game (wasting his excellent perimeter defense) and al at the center where his only skill is “pullung the chair” on griffen.
Patrick KB. Nugget - February 2, 2012
pulling the chair
Al got Blake twice on that sunday. Hopefully Reggie Evans has been schooling blake on what to do against that move today.
Steve Perrin - February 2, 2012
Reach for opposing players gonads on way to the floor to soften the fall.
PV Mike - February 2, 2012
hehe i member that
back when he was here. reggie is an odd bird to say the very least.
Patrick KB. Nugget - February 2, 2012
i saw cook talking to him about it on the sidelines. blake seemeed to think it was illegal
if nothing else cook is savvy.
Patrick KB. Nugget - February 2, 2012
Sunday
On Sunday, the Clippers were often content to defend Gallo with Foye. He’s 6’10" but he’s not a post player, so it wasn’t really a disaster. But Patrick is right — Karl seemed happy to go small when the Clippers went small. Nuggets and Grizzlies both played three guards the entire fourth quarter on Tuesday also, IIRC. So that all plays into VDN’s hands. Plenty of minutes for Mo and Foye, don’t have to use Gomes the whole time. Obviously, it all gets a lot better for the Clippers if Caron plays.
Steve Perrin - February 2, 2012
Love vs. Griffin
Correct me if I’m wrong but I feel like Love and Griffin are completely different players and it makes them really hard to compare. While Love may have the better stats, the energy and effort Griffin brings to the floor pump up the rest of the team and the crowd and I think thats a huge part of what makes Griffin so great, not taking anything away from Love. I saw Love at UCLA during my freshman year there and he was just amazing. I’m still surprised that UCLA team didn’t make the finals. I also walked by him a few times and hes just huge.
DannyDodger - February 2, 2012
if you asked me which one i'd rather have for the long haul it is griffen, but...
at this point in their carreers love is clearly superior because he is a weapon offensively and griffen is not an effective shooter.
Patrick KB. Nugget - February 2, 2012
Who cares? He scores 22 ppg
Call me crazy – that’s a weapon
Jax - February 2, 2012
well i cares.
for the reasons i stated. he is a volume shooter outside, where love is a deadly shooter outside. blake should pass love in 1-2 years but right now love is just more rounded/efficient.
Patrick KB. Nugget - February 2, 2012
when it comes to love and griffin...
griffin has the star magnet factor…..he’s the reason chris paul , caron butler, and why dwight howard wants to play for the clips….im not sure i can say the same for love
nauticazn25 - February 2, 2012
"It is the only time... since 1946, that an NBA player has been on the floor for over 20 minutes without getting a point or a rebound...."
That’s just crazy.
John Raffo - February 2, 2012
so is that one of the curses that CP3 wants Ralph Lawler to warn him about before the game?
cause that just SUCKS!
chrisd - February 2, 2012
Is that for real?
I swear Gomes did something like this before :P
ClipperChuck - February 2, 2012
Ah close...
he went 0-4 with 1 reb, 1 ast and 0 points in 22 minutes before.
http://espn.go.com/nba/boxscore?gameId=310314029
ClipperChuck - February 2, 2012
so what you guys are basically telling me is that
gomes is the guy who inexplicably goes off tonight against the nuggets?
Patrick KB. Nugget - February 2, 2012
yes. and that brian cook will hit the game winning 3…
DannyDodger - February 2, 2012
Yes
and in this parallel universe DJ goes 12-12 from the charity stripe in the 4th quarter to ice the game.
ClipperChuck - February 2, 2012
and Reggie Evans finds his dribble and gets 10 assists.
chrisd - February 2, 2012
well there goes my hack deandre/blake strategy.
Patrick KB. Nugget - February 2, 2012
any word on Caron yet?
i have a stupid family dinner tonight and not going to be able to watch live with y’all, but going to DVR it and try my best not to be tempted to check my phone for the scores. ugh, damn family time.
chrisd - February 2, 2012
Stupid families!
I hate them.

Shaq just gave his official blessing to Blake Griffin as the new official "Superman"
This should now be the official nickname: Blake Griffin is now officially Superman!
