The Back Story:
The Big Picture:
The Clippers are 4-1 on their season-long road trip as they arrive in Dallas to face the Mavericks on their final stop. The trip includes two close wins over good teams (Orlando and Philadelphia) and two blowout wins over terrible teams (Washington and Charlotte) and only one blemish (a bad loss in Cleveland). Getting focused for the defending champs should be easy -- the Mavs have won nine straight over the Clippers in Dallas going back to 2006. When the Clippers went to Utah a couple weeks ago, Chris Paul asked Ralph Lawler to let him know whenever the Clippers have a record of futility against an opponent -- I think this one qualifies, so hopefully Ralph did his job. A motivated Paul will always go a long way towards a victory. The Clippers beat the Mavs in LA last month, without Paul; but they did have Chauncey Billups for that one, and he ended up making the game winning three at the buzzer. Still, no offense to Chauncey, but given a choice of having Paul or Chauncey against the Mavs, I'll take Paul every time. In the first meeting, Dallas bottled up Blake Griffin pretty well, holding him to 6 for 15 shooting, but he did have 17 rebounds and 7 assists. They'll likely need his scoring tonight, playing on the road.

The Antagonist:
The Mavericks are a little hard to figure. They don't seem like they're firing on all cylinders yet, but even so they've got a solid 17-11 record. Dirk Nowitzki, the Finals MVP, hasn't been nearly as sharp this season. After playing into June in the NBA, and then competing in the EuroBasket championship in September, he took a little lockout vacation and consequently came into the season out of shape. He took a week off in late January to work on his conditioning, and is starting to look more like his old self -- he's averaged 26 in his last four games. In addition to Nowitzki's drop off, the Mavericks may be missing the departed Tyson Chandler and J.J. Barea. Lamar Odom and Vince Carter among others were brought in to take up the slack, but Odom has been terrible, and Carter is way past the Vinsanity days. Still, these are the defending champs, they have three starters back and the highest scoring bench in the NBA, Rick Carlisle is one of the top coaches, and you'd be crazy to count them out of any game or out of contention for another title.
The Subplots
From the Urban Dictionary:
maverick
v. to look something up on Dictionary.com to find its pronunciation.
We had no idea how to say Aeschylus, so we mavericked it.

Basketball can be a game of inches
Think it would be a better assignment to send Deandre to guard Nowitzki even if it takes Jordan off the rebound. Jordan can try and bother Nowitzki with his length, possibly causing him to adjust. Not that it’s going to happen for sure, since Nowitzki would probably still get his, but we want to bother Dirk as much as possible, thus using Jordan’s length might be a good idea.
One thing to keep note is that Dallas is on a lot of people’s forgotten list because of how they have started. But what is surprising is that even though they started off very poorly, they have managed to creep up and is currently 17-11 (Clippers are 17-8) so it’s important to remember that Dallas is still a very adequate team even without players like Brea, Butler, and Chandler. To break them off individually, they have guys like Carter, Nowitzki, Beaubois, Jet, West, Odom, Yi, Kidd, and etc. They may be old, but they’re not washed up. Dallas can still be a dangerous team; let’s not make them the sleeper picks again.
No Butler reference! In Butler’s first outing against his former team, he struggled offensively going 1-12. People thought he was tired, which is fine since he has a day’s rest for this game, but I want to see him go ape on his former team. Actually, I love it when players go ape on their former team, except when it happens to my Clippers of course or guys I hate. Oh and not to mention that Butler’s only basket was in transition pulling up for an open jumper last game vs the Mav’s. I want to see a more aggressive Butler showing what Cuban is missing out on.
Oh and nice job with late night preview. Nostalgia or just didn’t want to do one in the morning?

Did I just ask if you were nostalgic?
I meant insommia…
JackduhSun - February 13, 2012
procrastination
Also, I had a piece on J.R. Smith for SBNation LA and a recap for SBNation NBA last night. Nothing like three deadlines on a Sunday night.

re: Butler
hopefully he goes off cause he’s going to be getting his championship ring before the game. perfect time for him to take it to them and say thank you!
chrisd - February 13, 2012
It's too bad
Butler was a non factor for that championship run. While winning your first ring is magical, I bet being a contributor to winning your next ring would be even more magical. And it’d be even more magical if you could actually do it with the Clippers. Talk about looking forward to 2012!
JackduhSun - February 13, 2012
Oh man...
I should have had that in the preview.
Steve Perrin - February 13, 2012
Hopefully this will be a perfect end to an almost perfect road trip record wise (Chauncey getting hurt makes this trip memorable for the wrong reasons, but a 5-1 Grammy trip would help erase that).
We should have some confidence in this game knowing we beat them without CP3, although Dallas has been on point lately minus their loss to Portland.
chrisd - February 13, 2012
Chandler was a big factor in the Linsanity
I watched parts of the games and Chandler played out of his mind. It just got lost in all the ruckus.

FYI,
CP3 to be interviewed on Dan Patrick Show this morning
PV Mike - February 13, 2012
So I listened to the interview
CP3 glowed about playing for the Clippers. Says it’s like a college team where everybody always hangs out. He also has transitioned to LA and loves the weather but had little chance to do much yet because of the NBA schedule ( he has not heard of The Grove when asked if he has been there yet). Finally Dan asked him if younger Clips had an advantage over older tams with the condensed schedule and he stated they really were not all that young but the training staff for the Clippers is incredible. He passed the phone to Blake who was very evasive about being in the dunk contest.
PV Mike - February 13, 2012
seriously - The Grove?
That’s the L.A. landmark we now ask new arrivals about? Not say, the Getty? Or maybe Rodeo Drive? How about the beach? Santa Monica pier? Have you had a Pink’s chili dog or a Tommy’s chili burger yet? None of those but “have you been to the Grove?”

Caron Butler
Tuff Juice is getting his ring tonight too. He’s going to get a large reception from the Dallas crowd.
vaughtfromhisspot - February 13, 2012
We have two tough games this week: Dallas and Portland
lovinglosangeles - February 13, 2012
Regardless of win or lose tonight, I am very proud of them for their effort on this road, best ever
