The Back Story:
First meeting of the season. The Sixers dominated the Clippers twice last season.
The Big Picture:
The Clippers suffered their worst defeat of the season on Wednesday night in Cleveland. Sure, losses at San Antonio and Utah and at home against the Nuggets were by a wider margin, but they were also to good teams. Cleveland is a non-playoff team in the East, and were playing without their leading scorer not to mention two other key members of their team. It was the first game the Clippers played without Chauncey Billups after learning that he was lost for the season with a torn Achilles tendon, so that may have contributed to the poor performance -- but they need to get over that. If it was on their minds in Cleveland, so be it, but the season's too short to allow that injury to affect their performance for long. Philadelphia is a much tougher opponent than Cleveland, and a team that shut down Blake Griffin in two games last season. The Clippers haven't lost back to back games since games 2 and 3 of the season -- they've been coming back strong after losses for a while now. I expect them to be focused and sharp in this one. I don't think Chris Paul will allow them to be anything less. But will it be enough against a very deep Sixers team?

The Antagonist:
I have to say up front that I'm not completely sold on the Sixers. The stellar record (18-8), and especially the gaudy point differential (+9.3, second in the NBA behind only Chicago) are certainly impressive. But they've come at the expense of a whole bunch of really bad teams. The Sixers have played 14 games against teams below .500 this season -- the Clippers have played just 6. Philly's record against teams .500 or better is just 6-6, while the Clippers are 10-7. I'm not saying Philadelphia isn't good, but I'm not convinced they're as good as their point differential. After all, the Sixers are plus 84 in three games against Washington -- the Clippers beat the Wizards by 26 also, they just haven't played them three times. The Sixers are another one of those super deep balanced teams that seem to be in vogue this season for some reason -- teams like the Nuggets and the Jazz and the Rockets. Philly has eight players averaging between 9 and 16 points per game, led by Lou Williams at 15.7. They also play elite defense, leading the league in defensive efficiency to date (though admittedly, that again may be influenced by the relatively easy schedule they've played). So far they've held their opponents to 42% shooting, 31% from the three point line; that's good defense no matter who you're playing.
The Subplots
From the Urban Dictionary:
sixer
A six pack of beer.
To start the morning off right, I downed a sixer.

pleasant surprise
I thought the next game wasn’t until tomorrow. Now, I have reason to ditch work early and watch the game. Money!
dan73962 - February 10, 2012
Iggy is only 27?
Remember during the off-season when the rumors of a swap of Kaman for Iguodala were filling our minds of finally becoming a playoff team? That seemed like centuries ago.
vaughtfromhisspot - February 10, 2012
oops
Actually, he’s been 28 for a couple weeks now. My bad.
Steve Perrin - February 10, 2012
Not feeling this game as a win.
PV Mike - February 10, 2012
I wish
Jrue had played like this at UCLA. our team would have actually been decent then…oh well. I hope he sucks today. we must win!
DannyDodger - February 10, 2012
UCLA
John Hollinger has a system for rating college players entering the draft based on their performance as pros. He had to put in a “Ben Howalnd factor” or some such to account for how much more productive UCLA players were as pros than as college players. Holiday, Collison, Westbrook, Afflalo… the list goes on and on of players that have become stars after getting out from under Howland’s thumb.
Steve Perrin - February 10, 2012
There should be a
Mike Krzyzewski factor as well too then, right?
JackduhSun - February 10, 2012
Why is that? Why are these guys more productive in the NBA than they were in college? What is Howland doooing. I watched Holiday, Collison, Mbah a Moute, Westbrook and Love while they were in college, and of those guys the only ones I thought would be great in the NBA were Love and Collison. I knew Mbah would find his place somewhere because of his defense and Westbrook is an athletic freak, but Holiday was a COMPLETE surprise. Even Love is a bit of a suprise, but I mean I don’t think anyone saw him averaging 15 rebounds a game.
DannyDodger - February 10, 2012
I always had this intuition that playing for Howland would deflat your stats.
It’s not always true of course, but it seems like the guys you mentioned above always seem to not have high numbers like guys liek JJ Reddick or Blake Griffin. Part of it could be that Howland is more of a aggressive defensive man to man coach. Another could be (and this is all opinion) that Howland plays a lot of team basketball more than individual 1 on 1.
JackduhSun - February 10, 2012
Part of it is that the players were very young or playing out of position
That was the case with Jrue – who played only one year at UCLA
Not sure Collison is playing that much better now. He was good in college. Same goes for Afflalo (who played for three years).
Westbrook came out of nowhere. He didn’t start until midway through his second year and then went pro. He was not highly touted out of high school (at Leuzinger).
So I’m not sure I agree with the Howland “thumb” comment.
Jax - February 10, 2012
They didn't give him a chance - Collison started at the point
Jax - February 10, 2012
Yea I remember that, but even when he did get to play point he didn’t look good. He didn’t look good doing anything really…but I guess you’re right, he was playing out of position. But I can’t forgive him. He gave us hope with his recruitment and then let us down lol
DannyDodger - February 10, 2012
Yah he was pissed but this was a difficult sit as Collison wasn't going to be moved
Jax - February 10, 2012
Espeically in Collisons last year. I think for most of that year he was shooting over 90% fts, 50% fgs and 40% 3’s. It was crazy
DannyDodger - February 10, 2012
Unfortunately I'll be moving tonight
so I won’t be able to watch this one, but here’s to hoping the Clips can get it done after a dissapointing loss on Wednesday.
SoCalBoltFan - February 10, 2012
Griffin vs. Philadelphia
Of the two games last year, only one was terrible. The other game , Griffin struggled a bit from the floor, but ended up going 8 for 11 from the stripe and ended the game with 20 points, 18(!) rebounds and 5 assists. That’s a pretty solid game IMO.
It’s important to note, the game when Griffin really sucked against Philadelphia , Gordon was injured and didn’t play.
Michael White - February 10, 2012
Yep
Jax - February 10, 2012
This is a good team, so I think the team will step it up.
Pride guys. Let’s get a “W”.
tenkaistar - February 10, 2012
Huge game. We need the W. Need it.
FlyByKnight - February 10, 2012
I seem to remember ...
…at one of the games last year against the Sixers, EB was getting very physical with Blake…knocked him down on the floor as I recall…
saxmanager - February 10, 2012
It will be interesting to see if VDN's tough love motivates the team
ganima - February 10, 2012
If they lost this game and won the next two, it would be a successful road trip in my book.
saxmanager - February 10, 2012
this urban dictionnary is the most awesome thing ever
american curses are just hilarious!!!
I can’t wait to say a laker fan that he’s a filthy cunt lol
paris clips man - February 10, 2012 via mobile
hahaha. Well be careful what you say...
…and who you say it to. Since the Lakers have such a huge fanbase, you could start trouble with a thug. And never say the C-word at all in front of ANY woman. It’s the most offensive word to a woman, whether it’s directed to them or not.
Chris McD - February 10, 2012
keep PHI under 90 and Clippers win this game
It all starts with defense, which means effort, intensity, and hustle. Then, offense will take care of itself.
dan73962 - February 10, 2012
Brand hasn't been put in the poster yet right??
Here hoping that tonight is the night.
XXDC2XX - February 10, 2012
I would pay to see that
ganima - February 10, 2012
Philly did a good job guarding Blake last year.
PV Mike - February 10, 2012
I think we might see the new alternate blues tonight.
i doubted we had them, but it looks like Mo is wearing them under his warmups.
http://t.co/6rIgds87
Hooch20 - February 10, 2012
you can't see anything there
and Foye/Cook are wearing red shorts in the background.
I hope we get to see the blues this trip, but I doubt it.
LJ Hann - February 10, 2012
Mo usually has a weird pair of half-blue half-red shorts on during warmups.
2-ScoopIceCream - February 10, 2012
I zooomed on my phone
and can see them pretty good. To me it looks like our home and road shorts, but a blue version of them with a red and white stripe down the side.
Not sure, just pure speculation.
