The Back Story:

The Big Picture:

On back to back nights Sunday and Monday, the Clippers beat the team with the second best record in the West on the road, and then beat the team with the best record in the West in LA. So what's next? Only a trip to the city where they've suffered a decades long nightmare of futility. The Clippers have lost 42 games in their last 43 trips to Salt Lake City, including an embarrassing 108-79 drubbing just two weeks ago. But there's plenty of reason to think tonight could be different. For one thing, the Clippers played that first meeting without Chris Paul and Mo Williams. The Clippers have three players with a PER over 20 this season, and they're two of them, so they make a difference. For another thing, the Clippers are simply playing great basketball right now. They're shooting lights out, they're getting good spacing, they're getting great interior play from DeAndre Jordan and Blake Griffin, and Chris Paul is once again Chris Paul after missing five games. The Clippers were 11-4 in January, and three of the four losses occurred while Paul was out of the lineup, or still rusty from his layoff. They would certainly have been 13-2 had Paul not gotten hurt, if not better. The good news about heading to Utah is that there's little chance of the Clippers getting complacent and letting up against the Jazz -- not when they have such a history of losing in Utah. They'll want this one.

Star-divide

The Antagonist:

The Jazz have an almost identical record to the Clippers this season. Both teams have had a very home friendly start to the season, with only six road games each. Both teams are 2-4 on the road. The only difference in records is that Utah has one more home loss at 10-3 as opposed to the Clippers home record of 10-2. The Jazz continue to be one of the surprise contenders in the West (where there are ten teams bunched within 4.5 games of each other from second position to 11th). After closing out last season in terrible fashion in the wake of the Deron Williams trade and Jerry Sloan's retirement, most analysts figured the Jazz would be in for a down year. It hasn't worked out that way so far. Although they seem to be coming down to earth some (they've lost three of their last five), they're still a tough out, especially at home. Utah has always enjoyed one of the best home court advantages in the NBA, playing at altitude in Salt Lake City, as evidenced by that 10-3 start at home this year. They are led by their big men, Al Jefferson and Paul Millsap, both of whom are having All Star type seasons so far. Millsap in particular has been playing out of his head. Jefferson missed Monday's game with a sore ankle and is listed as a game time decision for this one. He would be a major loss for them against the Clippers' front line.

The Subplots

  • Red hot Clippers. Back to back wins over the two best teams in the West, a three game winning streak, and a team that only once in January with a healthy Chris Paul. The Clippers are on a roll, and a win tonight would really serve notice on the entire league that this is a team to be reckoned with.
  • Raja Bell out. Raja Bell missed Monday's game and is not expected to play in this one. He has a strained adductor muscle, which sounds better than talking about the man's groin. With Bell out, Gordon Hayward slides to the shooting guard and Josh Howard will start at the three, and Utah's wings get bigger.
  • The wild, wild West. The Western Conference remains as competitive as ever. We keep expecting several teams to go into decline (ahem, Utah) but for the most part all of the traditional contenders keep hanging in there, even as new challengers are stepping forward. Of the playoff teams of recent vintage, only Phoenix and New Orleans have actually gotten bad enough to be considered out of the postseason picture this season. Meanwhile, in the last several seasons, Oklahoma City, Memphis and now the Clippers and even Minnesota have become playoff contenders. Bottom line is that it looks like two or three good teams will miss the playoffs this season, simply because of the numbers game.
  • Speaking of which. So far this season, in just 18 games, the Clippers have faced all 10 of the Western Conference teams that have won at least 10 games (besides themselves). In fact, they've played the Lakers and Portland twice each, meaning that two-thirds of their games have come against Western Conference contenders. Oh, and then there's Utah tonight and Denver tomorrow night. In their 12 games against their conference rivals, the Clippers are 7 and 5. They've beaten 7 of the 10 once each, and are looking for their eighth victim tonight. Now, with 11 contenders in the West, that leaves only four non-contenders. And this season, even more than usual, the schedule is heavily weighted toward playing your own conference, 48 games to 18 games. Still, eventually the Clippers will get to play some of the weaker teams. Right?
  • 1-42. The Clippers have won once in Salt Lake City since 1990. Think about that. Karl Malone and John Stockton were in their fifth seasons in the league when the Jazz began a 42 and 1 string of home wins against the Clippers. The Jazz have also won 11 of 12 against the Clippers overall, but this should be a different ball game with Chris Paul. This team simply has had the Clippers number, for a very, very long time.
  • Raining Threes. It takes some getting used to for citizens of Clips Nation, this whole having shooters thing. The Clippers have for years and years been among the worst outside shooting teams in the league. That's begun to change some in the last few seasons, but this is ridiculous. In the past six games, the Clippers have averaged over 10 threes per game, making 63 of 142 overall during that span, 44%. They've made 27 in the last two, and it's been a huge part of the attack. It's not all a fluke -- Chauncey Billups (39% career, 37% this season), Mo Williams (39% and 48%) and Caron Butler (32% and 36%) can all drain the three if you leave them open, and playing with Chris Paul and Blake Griffin, they get left open a lot. Mo is bound to cool off some, but overall I see no reason why the Clippers won't continue to get, take and make lots of open threes.
  • RPI. With their win over the Thunder Monday night, the Clippers took over first place in the NBA in RPI. RPI adjusts for the strength of the opponents a team has played. What it doesn't do is adjust for home games versus road games. The Clippers have played one of the most difficult schedules in the NBA so far, so it makes sense that they would be highly rated by the RPI, but there's no denying that they've also been aided by the home-heavy start to the season.
  • Bad loss. The Clippers suffered their worst loss of the season two weeks ago against these guys. However, I'm not sure there's a lot to be gleaned from that game. LA was missing two of their top six players, which makes a particularly big difference considering how thin the bench gets after six or seven guys. The Clippers had zero energy in the game, and more or less shut down in the second half. It was almost a strategic decision, as the last Utah game was the middle game of a back to back to back stretch. The Clippers ended up conserving some energy and beating Dallas the next night. Bottom line is, the major lesson learned from the last meeting is to play with a purpose from the start of this one, but really, the team should have already known that. Besides, I doubt Chris Paul would let them play that badly.
  • Weary is relative. This will be the Clippers third game in four nights. In a normal NBA season, that would qualify as a problem. But in this compressed season, any time you're not playing back-to-back it's a good thing. Utah last played on Monday as well, a home win over Portland.
  • Griffin. Blake Griffin averaged 27 points in three meetings with Utah last season, while shooting almost 61% from the field. They were his best numbers against any Western Conference team last season. However, he had a terrible game against them two weeks ago, managing just 10 points on 12 shots. Griffin needs to come out with purpose and energy in this game -- he's bigger and stronger than Paul Millsap, and should be able to overpower him.
  • Devin Harris. When Utah traded Deron Williams last season, one of the key pieces in that deal was Devin Harris. An All Star during his first season in New Jersey after being traded for Jason Kidd (how about that, this guy has been traded for two different Gold Medalists), he just doesn't seem like the same player anymore. Basically, he has stopped scoring. For his career he averages almost 17 points per 36 minutes: he's at 13 per 36 this season. Which would be fine if his assists were way up, but they're not. I can remember lamenting the bad luck of missing out on Harris when Shaun Livingston suffered his injury -- now here we are seven years after that draft and several teams later for both players, and Livingston is almost as productive as Harris again. Go figure.
  • Caron Butler. Caron had a season high 22 against OKC. He's been a steady force for the Clippers this season, scoring at least 9 points in every game but one, and we found out later that he played hurt in his one bad outing. Lately he's been helping the team to quick starts with big first quarters. He's been great from deep recently (he's made 14 of 28 threes in the five games since he sat out against the Wolves), but I also love the fact that he's gotten crucial buckets driving to the hole late in games. His spot up shooting gets teams closing out hard, which allows him to take the ball to the rim. The guy has been a stud so far, and is a pretty incredible fourth scoring option when you think about it.
  • Butler and Howard. The starting small forwards in tonight's game were traded for each other almost exactly two years ago. So there's that.
  • Millsap. Two weeks ago I was predicting that Millsap would be the big snub of the All Star selection process; now I'm not so sure. If he is left off, it will be a massive snub, that's not in question. But with Utah in the midst of the Western Conference playoff race, coaches are going to be looking for a Jazz player to send to Orlando, and Millsap is the obvious answer. The guy is averaging 17 points and 9 rebounds, numbers that don't really scream All Star, but his efficiency is outstanding. His true shooting percentage is 57%, right on his career average, a number that he seems to hit year in and year out like clockwork. He is one of only six players in the league with a PER over 25. The other five guys on that list are all going to be All Stars -- Millsap should be too. The problem is that West forward is the deepest position in the league. If you pick Pau Gasol as the backup center and spend both of the wild card spots on forwards, you can take Kevin Love, LaMarcus Aldridge, Dirk Nowitzki and Millsap as reserves. That seems about right. If you take an extra guard, it gets dicey for Millsap.
  • DJ on Jefferson. If Jefferson plays, the Clippers will defend this one straight up, with DJ on AJ and Griffin on Millsap. Jefferson will be a tough challenge for Jordan. He's a very clever post scorer, and has some great pump fakes. Given that DeAndre has been known to go for pump fakes way too easily, it could be a problem. If Jefferson doesn't play, it will be a combination of youngsters Derrick Favors and Enes Kanter for Utah.
  • The three guard lineup. Vinny Del Negro has found more and more minutes for his three guard lineup, no doubt mainly because all those guys have been playing great. When Paul, Billups and Williams are all on a roll, who wants to sit one of them? The Clippers have been getting away with it, partly because so many NBA players these days, even if they have a height advantage, remain perimeter players who can't really exploit a size advantage in the post. Against Kobe and the Lakers or LeBron and the Heat, you'll get killed going small. Against Denver and Oklahoma City? Not so much. Even giving away 6 or 8 inches to the likes of Gallinari and Durant, the Clippers weren't made to pay for their tiny wing men, since neither of those guys have any sort of back to the basket game. Sure, they can shoot over Billups, but they can realistically shoot over Caron Butler or Ryan Gomes also. And if Billups can stay in front of them and keep them from getting to the rim, it may actually be a defensive win. Long story short, look for a lot of the three guard lineup tonight. There's not a lot of reason to fear the post up game of Gordon Hayward or C.J. Miles -- maybe Josh Howard could pose a problem.
  • Rotations. We'll see if it's a long term trend, but VDN went with eight guys on Monday. He even managed to keep the minutes relatively low for the starters, with Paul logging a team high 37 and Griffin getting 36. It's only possible to keep Gomes out of the rotation if you're willing to play Foye and Billups at the three some, which as we've said should be OK against Utah, but won't work against every team. I'm not sure why it was this tough to figure out, but VDN also managed to keep at least three of his big six (the starters plus Williams) on the floor the entire game (until he cleared the bench in the final minute), and either Paul or Griffin was on the floor for all but 2:45 of the first 47 minutes. More of this please.
  • Two simple rules. Following up on the above, there are two simple rules for the Clippers rotations:
Rule 1 - either Paul or Griffin should be on the floor at all times.
Rule 2 - three of the big six should be on the floor at all times.
The only disadvantage to this is that it limits the shared court time of Griffin and Paul, but given that Paul's chemistry is better with DeAndre Jordan at this point, this doesn't seem like a travesty. Billups and Griffin and Williams and Griffin actually work great together. Oh, and it gets pretty tough to adhere to rule 2 against teams with big, powerful wing players.
  • Dermatitis? Basketball-reference lists Jamaal Tinsley as being out with dermatitis. This reminds me of the days, a couple of CBA's ago, when there was an official "injured list" and for players to be inactive, you were required to list an injury, even if the player was well enough to play. I particularly enjoyed the box scores that said "Moochie Norris DNP (Insomnia)." Anyway, those days are long gone, you no longer are required to give a medical reason for inactivating a player, and the Jazz have other guys out, so if they say Jamaal has dermatitis, he must have dermatitis. I'm sure it's quite unpleasant for him, and far be it from me to make light of skin conditions. I myself suffer from nasty chindruff (dandruff of the chin).
  • From the Urban Dictionary:

I'm finish with all of that jazz.

Lob City!

biggest W of the year tomorrow. Clips by 10

lets hope the clippers show up this time
Revenge time. Let's kill another long standing bad streak. We're on a roll.
After the Lord Mayors Show

It’s a saying in the UK where it’s hard for people to raise themselves after a big show/success – an anticlimax if you like.

It happens often to sports teams who after a big game, struggle to get the adrenaline going for the next game.

I think how we come out tonight will speak a lot about us as a team. We’ve had 2 great wins but all they are are 2 W’s, no more. Having CP3 in the locker room should help as I can’t see him letting the team get too complacent.

here in the states we call it a trap game.

I don’t think this will be a trap game or After the Lord Mayors Show game since we got whooped by them last time and are looking for some revenge. Just like tomorrow’s game Denver will be looking to enact some revenge with their starting PG back (Ty Lawson). The last 2 games were tough, these 2 are going to be just as tough. Let’s go Clips!

blow out

110-94 the good guys which means us!

blake “raging bull” is gonna go off for 44, 17, 4 assist

Cookie is gonna rain 4 3’s!!!

44,174 assists? Watch out John Stockton!!!!
and yet thats still more probable then cookie raining 4 3's
I don't quite understand

Is he serious? or is he trying to be funny?

Funniest thing ever

Hahahahhahahah

haha

its 44 points, 17 rebs, 4 assist

Millsap is known to be a top defender so I will be looking forward to see our Raging Bull destroy him

The Utah front line is big and aggressive so I worry about DJ getting in foul trouble

That is why I foresee Cookie getting more PT and showcasing his shooting touch by raining some 3s!!

you lost me at showcasing Cookie's shooting touch.
long range shooting is Cookies strongest part of his game

he is not good at ball handling
Not really a rebounder
not a defensive specialist
has little to no post moves

but he can bomb some 3s from time to time when we need it

if he gets the ball in flow, it has a pretty good chance of nailing the 3

Um.

Where are you getting these ideas? Brian Cook is shooting a WHOPPING 21 % FROM 3 POINT LINE. I don’t know why you think he is so good, but I’m pretty sure I would rather have Reggie take 2 free throws compared to cook shooting 5 WIDE open 3s.

If Cook plays we loose

I do not want to see Cook in the game even in Garbage time W for us.

WOW Josh Howard...

You guys remember during 06’-07’ when the Lakers were contemplating a Kobe for Josh Howard trade? It may have been the season before.

ha ha what? i dont remember hearing that..
Steve, the best box score DNP's ever were Yahoo's box scores for the Spurs a few years back.

Robert Horry DNP – Old Age
Brent Barry DNP – Tummy Ache

hopefully we get off the plane this time

i would think the players would want some payback after that humiliation a few weeks ago. scrub dunk drill, crowd chanting, etc. a win here would be just as big of a statement as the last couple of games for me personally. REVERSE THE UTAH CURSE ALREADY.

REVERSE THE CURSE

If we win you guys will see a gif montage on the game thread!! I got em ready and they’re ready to explode. Sneak peek:

haha nice

good times with spongebob

I think this game also will show one aspect of the Clippers we haven't seen.

What do they do against a team they lost to? Will they step up their game and go all out looking for revenge, will they play their normal game with no added intensity, or will they come out with their tail between their legs? I hope they come out, especially CP3, looking for sweet sweet revenge. If they do, then I think that will pave the road for other teams we lost to (the Lakers maybe?)

I have a feeling Griffin will explode

he seemed nearly unstoppable in the 3rd quarter.

It just seemed like they had a flow chart in the locker-room: Butler 1st quarter, then micro wave Mo, 3 point barrage to end the second quarter. 3rd quarter Flying Saucer Griffin 4rd Quarter: Paul for the kill.

other random nick names

Blake Ginger Fridge Griffin
Blake anti cookie Griffin

there should be a webpage for making random nick names for Blake

The Ginger theme

I’ve been toying with Ginger Thunder and Ginger Chocolate. Actually, chocolate covered ginger is quite good. Now I’m hungry.

Kind of catchy

But I am sure he would hate it. He probably took a ribbing as a bi-racial ginger growing up. Kids can be cruel.

Anyone catch Griffin's preferred nickname video on NBA channel/youtube?

A couple of guys (I forgot who, I think it was one of the Barries) made a list of nicknames and they asked Griffin which he preferred. He simply x’ed them all out and walked away haha.

gotta go with Mad Dog Griffen

Instant Mo!
When Mo shoots lights out MILPH can say

(Insert team name) just got a Mo job!

I like this

I want them to scream “for the Trey” when Thompkins steps outside for a 3.

So would VDN
Hey, he's hit 1-7 from outside this year - better than Rasual Butler (probably!)
I prefer the simple "MO MONEY"

Or “Mo money, Mo problems”

Another showcase game on national television (ESPN)

as added incentive to end the drought in Utah and play well.

Clippers history

I wonder how much VDN and the coaching staff sell the team on the Clippers past on the floor. I know they’re talking about winning a tough road game against a good Western Conference opponent and avenging an ugly loss from earlier. But will they bring up something like the Clippers have only won once in the last 43 games in Utah? Does that matter to the players? I know BG and CP3 have indicated its not about the past only the future (ex. Clippers curse) but does any of the past Clippers’ records motivate them?
As long as Griffin and CP3 stay I guess I don’t really care, but it is nice to think that they are aware they’re not just winning a game in Utah in a blank jersey but one that says C-L-I-P-P-E-R-S on the front. And that means just a little bit more.

I'm not sure

Maybe as a psychology thing (technical term!) it might be better to not sow the seed of failure in their minds – “we’ve not won hear in 200 years……..” It’s a negative statement.

It looks like the team are growing and feeding off the habit of actually winning games and I’d like to think that is the thing spurring them on, treating every (or nearly every – Lakers the exception) game as a regular season game.

I’m so looking forward to seeing the intensity of CP3 raise up in the playoffs – if he plays like he did against the Thunder then we shouldn’t be afraid of ANY team in the Western Conference.

I think they just have to remind them of last game

most of these players are born winners who don’t take defeat easil

The team mantra has been it's a new era

They’ve asked repeatedly about past failures and to a man the response has been it’s a new era for the Clips and that outside of DJ this team hasn’t been associated with past futility.

I completely understand that and have no problem with it

But being a Clippers fan for around 20 years I’d like to think the team knows there’s a little bit more going on here. And its not just Clippers fans that see it. Other NBA teams, analysts, and fans understand what it means to make the LA Clippers a playoff contender. Obviously I don’t expect them to embrace it and go out yelling “Let’s win this one for Danny Manning!!!” But I want them to be aware of the past. Its OK to use the idea of changing the culture of a losing franchise as motivation. It’s a good thing.

Why do they need to be aware of the past?

The past was BAD. The future is GOOD. Lets leave that behind and just create a winning culture.

To me, it’s not important that we make statements by winning at Utah. It’s important we continue to develop team chemistry and the front office continue to look at ways of making the roster better. It’s not settling for where we are now but to push forward, continually.

But what about the fans???

Just kidding. But just because the past has been so BAD doesn’t mean it didn’t exist. I really doesn’t bother me too much if the players are not aware of it, just keep winning. But it would be nice for us fans that have supported the team through all the horrible years. I agree that the team needs to worry about getting better. I’m worried that the Front Office and Sterling especially will become complacent. Winning a few games and making the playoffs can’t be good enough.
I feel that its a positive thing to be aware of the history of an organization that you are a part of. Even if that history is littered with poor management and ineptness. The players are trying to win a championship for themselves and for the Clippers. Reviving a lifeless franchise is a tremendous accomplishment. Is it too much to ask for the players to be aware of why? The Clippers past if very ugly, but that doesn’t mean it needs to be avoided like the plague.

I can almost guarantee the players are aware of the abysmal record in Utah (and in the past in general).

That’s what reporters are for. The Clips are going to give the good trained answers that it’s not about the past, but they are all aware that turning this franchise around is something that has never been done before. I think that’s part of the oddly added benefits of the Clips now, because they are a really good team and these guys are single handedly changing the culture around here. Say we win a championship this year, that’s the shit Hollywood movies are made of.

Well...

It’s got to be difficult for any of them to relate to the whole 1-42 thing. After all, that started when Blake was 33 days old (Griffin birthday 3/16/89, second most recent LAC win in Utah 4/18/89).

But DeAndre has never won there in four years, and he knows that. And he’s only one once against this team overall.

Cheapshot

8:30 pm local time start tonight, wont it be past everyone’s bed time out there?

I almost put that in the preview

It probably matters, but unfortunately not in a good way. The Clippers get 1.5 hours less time between their back to back against the Nuggets. When you’re flying back from Utah for another game that starts in 22 hours, that extra 90 minutes will make a difference.

Maybe to accommodate being the 2nd game on ESPN?
Yup

That’s the reason. And not only is it a later than usual scheduled start, it will probably be a late start from the scheduled start. If the first game runs long (as ESPN games usually do) they’ll hold the tip.

for real, those nationally televised games take sooo much longer to watch in-arena
Jazz fan here

Great preview, I’m really excited to see the Jazz take on a full strength Clippers squad. Unfortunately, if Jefferson is out, there is no way the Jazz will win this one. As strange as it sounds, the offense flows much smoother with him in it, as it allows Millsap to get good open looks, and he has become a fairly decent passer.

Even if he does play, I’m still not expecting a W. We’ve been terrible on perimeter defense lately, and do not shoot the 3 well at all. If we have any chance of winning, Hayward, Harris, and Miles will all need to be above average from beyond the arc.

Either way, I think this will be a great test for the Jazz, and I am psyched for tonight’s game! Good luck, def nice having a good LA team that I don’t despise with every fiber of my being, lol.

Thanks

Jeff is important for sure. And he has developed into a surprisingly good passer in the post. I guess you have to if you want to play in Utah, with all the off the ball action.

While I'd love to beat the Jazz full strength, i'll be just fine with no AJ in the game.

That being said, our last 2 wins have been against teams not playing full strength. I don’t want to take anything away from my Clips, but the Nuggets without Ty Lawson and OKC without Thabo were easier to beat. Just like we were easier to beat with CP3 & Mo gone last time we faced the Jazz. So hopefully no Jefferson to balance out the players missed in match-up disparity.

i don't think Thabo is such a difference maker

and we destroyed OKC.

offensively he's not, he's good at defense though and clearly our guards killed them from the outside.

i don’t think it would have made a difference with VDN’s great rotations (yes, i said it).

Harden is very reluctant on the 1st team.

He seems less confident in his shot when Westbrook/ Durant are there. I think he is more effective on the 2nd team because it’s pretty much do whatever you want to do when Durant and Westbrook are you.

Mo Money

Mo needs to learn and accept this

Big Game

need this not only to keep the Lakers off our tail but to end this terrible trend.

I don’t know if this was mentioned but did you guys hear Kendrick Perkins deleted his Twitter?! Oh man.

he deleted it a month ago

so urban myth

Actually.

Griffin’s dunk was so powerful that it not only affected the Perkins of today, it traveled back in time and hurt Perkins a month ago, and THAT led to his Twitter deletion. We saw it as present, and now we see it as past, it’s all the same thing o.O

ESPN First Take Debate today

Who is the best show in LA, Clippers or Lakers? Skip Bayless vehemently argued Lakers and Kobe and Stephen A Smith argued the Clippers. Facebook voting results 61% Clippers, 39% Lakers. Smith was awarded a championship belt for the day.

I’m not trying to be a hater, but what’s particularly compelling about the Lakers these days? They are by no means a bad basketball team, but the team is basically the same as it’s been the past few years (if lacking depth.) Been there, seen that, who really cares? Unless you’re a Laker fan….

The Clippers are a completely new squad (Paul, Billups, Butler) on top of the reigning ROY which is playing out to perfection. The Clippers put a ton of talent together and they’re actually good and winning games. No slow start like Miami and no alpha dog conflict like Miami (Paul and Griffin are truly complementary players.) Add on that the fact that the Clippers are trying to reverse decades of futility and that story-line is interesting.

No-brainer to me.

While it was hardly a scientific study

I did find it interesting since the Facebook vote was a national rather than local vote. Maybe it was a lot of the Laker haters voting against them but still the Lakers have fans all over the country. Maybe the Clippers and all their exposure is really catching on. I watch all Lakers and Clippers games and last night (Lakers and Bobcats) was one of the very few games I could only watched for a couple minutes. At least when the Clippers play a bad team it is always a potentially compelling game to watch.

Not sure if I'm a hater or not, but

the Lakers suck ;-)

No, it makes you a sucker

Sorry, only joking, couldn’t resist…..

Stephen A taking the Clippers side?

OMG, the world must be coming to an end. If it starts raining frogs, I’m buying all the canned goods.

Stephen A has turned a 180

He is 100% behind the current Clippers and feels the Lakers are a lost cause without shaking up the roster.Thinks things have gone sideways since Jim Buss is running things. Marcellus Riley on local Lakers flagship station with Max Kellerman is also in the Clippers corner big time these days.

Stephen A...

I rarely listen to him, but I get it from your description. Stephen A is adores Kobe, and he feels that Jim Buss has screwed up the team by overvaluing players OTHER than Kobe. So the fact that he’s down on the Lakers is just a different extension of his Kobe worship.

hes been on the bandwagon for a bit

we can hear him in the front even while hes all the way in the back

so in other words...

39% laker fans and 61% any other team fans

I am still annoyed at their whole Pacquiao Mayweather fight.

I love John Legend, and I thought he was extremely classy. However, I am a big Pacquiao fan and I’m tired of all of the crap he gets when Mayweather has clearly been the person ducking him. Stephen A Smith acts as if he is God with everything that he says and he thinks that by yelling louder, his opinions are stronger. Also Skip had the cheap shot on Griffin’s dunk. Sorry for this off topic comment, I just had to get this Pacquiao Mayweather thing off my chest.

really interesting point about dj and cp3's chemistry

blake always try to set a screen, but usually it’s a lazy screen that’s easily avoided. he seems to more likely to get in cp3’s way than to help him. dj seems to anticipate cp3 better.

you would think

CP3 has told Blake to either set a real screen for me or get the F out of my way.

ESPN has the Clips winning by 3

Which I think is pretty awesome considering the Clippers losing streak in Utah and the blowout last game.

Completely off topic but:

via hoopshype: Sean Deveney: Agent Bill Duffy also said that Joel Przybilla will choose between the #Heat and #Bulls by week’s end. Twitter

Hopefully he chooses Miami which would pave way for Kenyon to join us.

Going into Utah more confident than ever

I always get a sense of resignation whenever the clips go either to san antonio or utah, but this time not so much. I felt the hype at the early part of the season was too much, but after the last several games, I’m becoming more confident of our chances of an extended post-season run. Also, can’t stand that Caron Butler isn’t listed being marketed by Fox sports west whenever they put up that graphic to support clipper players to get into the all-star game. they put up blake, dj, chauncey, and cp3 but neglect caron. Caron has been huge for us this year- he probably doesn’t deserve all-star status but at least put his picture up there on the screen!

He isn't an all star candidate

so why would they put him on the all star voting graphic?

Yeah

Not Fox’s fault. Caron is not on the All Star ballot this year, so he’d have to be a write in. People could do that of course, but Fox is just following the NBA’s lead.

Honestly though, I can’t fathom why they go through this process of limiting the names on the ballot anymore. Everyone votes on line — do they even have paper ballots any more? Why are we worried about listing only 40 forwards when there are 60 starting forwards and several good reserves in each conference?

Two years ago it was Kaman. Last year it was Millsap. I mean, it’s not like these guys are actually going to WIN the fan vote, but if you’re only concerning yourself with players that have a chance to win, then you could print 4 names per position and be done with it.

Rule 2a

When Gomes is on the floor, Griffin and two of our top three guards must be there as well.

Easy, and potentially effective. Caron and one of our top guards get a breather, and perhaps DJ as well.

Gomes can be an innocuous member of a good squad. He shouldn’t shoot much nor play for long stretches, but he has the knowhow to get by in favorable circumstances. Until we get an upgrade, he can be managed into a more reasonable stopgap.

Mo-Jo Williams
"Give it to Mo!"
am i getting a little too self-confident if i say i fully expect the clippers to win this game?

al jefferson might not even play and if he does he’ll be less than 100%. i see this jazz team’s hot start as a complete fluke too.

ill be pretty disappointed if the clips can’t win this game. the biggest thing the jazz have tonight is homecourt.

that home court is clearly a big thing
Clippers are the favor

I’ve checked the odds in L A Times this morning, we are one point favor in this game.

Once you beat the number 1 seeded team in you last game, the mind set is you’re suppose to win all the games this point forward.

Memo to Chris Paul

Please show up again.

Thanks in advance.

The Clippers Have Been Red Hot From Beyond The Arc The Last Two Games

Whether they continue their hot three point shooting or not could determine the winner of tonight’s game. I don’t see the Clippers outscoring the Jazz in the paint unless Billups and CP3 spend a lot of time getting into the paint on offense and get the calls.

Gotta get this win in Mordor.

I’m tired of seeing them lose to Utah, especially in Utah.

Went out to find a Clipper hat...

…today in Ventura, and I went to 3 places, all sold out. Mind you they were all probably understocked(piles of Laker hats everywhere) but still, a good sign things are changing.

I want the Clippers hat that Ryan Gosling wears in 'Drive'

just saw the movie last night, good flick, love hearing Ralph Lawler’s voice during the flick.

I assume it was a custom hat

Google search came up with a supposed prop made by Lids. I guess you can go to the mall and have them make a likeness.

such an awesome movie

That was honestly the only part I liked about that movie.

It scored high because of its artistic appeal; I, on the other hand, was not impressed.

If you liked Drive, maybe i could recommend some other work directed by Nicolas Winding Refn?

In the 90’ies he started out as a 24 year old in Denmark with the film “Pusher”, which now has two sequels. Before directing “Drive”, he was well known for his work with the “Pusher” films. The movies are very violent, just so you know. The movies stare some of the best actors Denmark has to offer – you may know Mads Mikkelsen :)

thanks for the tip

i love the Danes, Copenhagen is one of my favorite cities that i’ve been too.

Pusher actually takes place in the underworld of Copenhagen! that may make it more interesting for you

I live myself in the third biggest city of Denmark, Odense – third biggest city, although the population is around 180k ;) I also went to Los Angeles for the second time two months ago, and the trip was planned so that I would have been able to watch our Clips, but the lockout made it impossible – I have no doubt in my mind that I will be sitting in an arena watching them play one day though :) Nevertheless the trip was amazing, the American Southwest has got some amazing natural wonders and some special and exciting cities

Underworld of Copenhagen, like Christiania?

That place was a trip. I love Tivoli Gardens. I went there for a wedding, nicest people in the world (the wedding was in Maribo but we spent a few nights in Copenhagen).

Sure, at night the Tivoli is especially beautiful

Christiania has been an often discussed topic in Denmark for many years for many reasons

I believe Christiania could have had a role in the movie, but as far as I remember, the area is not used in the film. Tivoli for sure is a special place – I believe it is the second oldest amusement park in the world, and as ClippersUK says, it’s very special at night with the lights and environment

You too

I just saw this last night as well. Great movie, I live DT and lived in the Silverlake/Los Feliz area for awhile so I love when movies at shot in the area. 500 Days of Summer is another good movie that shows off parts of the city.

500 Days is great at featuring Downtown LA

I’ve worked Downtown for nearly 15 years, and currently work right around the corner from the Bradbury Building, Angels Flight, etc… all featured in the film. And Minka Kelly to boot!

500 Days is a great movie.

One of the things i love about living in LA is seeing places i know in movies (and some reality shows). Makes me relate to the characters more i guess, i dunno, but i like it.

Raining Threes

Just a quick note on SP’s excellent bullet point here. Clipper 3-point shooting was just so ridiculously dreadful for so long, at a certain point just having one or two guys who could make a respectable number of 3s in a season seemed like a bonanza. So this barrage of excellence is yet another thing that many of us weren’t exactly prepared for.

It seems that there are two key elements in play here. First, the Clips have a strong inside presence with Griffin and Jordan and pick and roll and good penetration, so defenders have to stay home and protect the paint, and in the last stretch of games the spacing has been great. So the Clips have established a strong inside-out game, and they’re getting a whole lot of open looks. These are good shots that the shooters are taking, and that’s a big reason why they’re knocking them down.

Second, these guys can shoot. SP notes the percentages of Billups, Williams, and Butler, but Chris Paul shouldn’t be left off the list. CP does a crazy number of things really well, but one of the most impressive is the way that he hits open jump shots. It’s a rarer skill amongst pure point guards than you might think. Another element here is that the Clippers had an extraordinary shooter the last couple of years in Eric Gordon, but he went through significant slumps, and it seemed like he should be making a much higher percentage of his 3s. It might have been that he wasn’t getting the same kind of shots that the current guys are getting, but he had a lot of open looks that didn’t go down. We’ll see if Mo can keep the gas pedal jammed into the floor the way that he has lately, as he is an amazing weapon and an amazing player right now.

As impressive and stunning as Griffin’s dunk was against the Thunder, the 4 3-pointers was better sustained television, just a spectacular sequence of action. Ralph was absolutely classic, and I actually feared for his health for a second on that final bingo. He gave it everything he had, and it was awesome. It was the least that Griffin to do, to follow up the shooters and Ralph with a piece of classic stunt work, and then CP put on his 4th quarter clinic to close it out. Good times.

xlnt post Zhiv

I was there and I can tell you that while the dunk was awesome, the 4 3ptrs basically sealed the game at a time when it seemed that the Thunder was taking control. One minute we are down six and can’t seem to score or do anything except get shots blocked and the next we’re up 18 heading into half time with an irate Russell Westbrook screaming about a non-call.

Stunning.

Clips were up 6

and losing momentum. It was a 12 point barrage going into the half (the real key to the game). The dunk happened with a 20 point lead. Amazing play and exclamation mark perhaps but not the turning point.

Right - obviously I meant we were up six
Regarding Clipper 3 point shooting

Rasual Butler (RASUAL BUTLER!!!) set the franchise record for 3s made in a season (145). And he only made 33.6% of them.

i feel like Mo or Chauncey or Caron can break that record even in this shortened season.
I was going to point that out

and yes they could. Most likely Billups who takes more than either and career wise is the best volume 3pt shooter of the 3.

looks like Al Jefferson is in tonight with Raja Bell out.
Daniel Ewing is out

or been out a longe while so we’re good.

he still plays?

maybe for the SeaPort Seagulls

He’s still trying to find Raja Bell somewhere on the perimeter!

Doing the Dougie

Gotta take my cap off to Dougie Collins and his 76ers. They be ballin’ tonight vs Bulls

At Utah

I almost guarantee the Clippers will loose again to Utah. It seems the Clips always play dumb and clumsy. I don’t know what it is with the Clippers loosing to Utah all the time at their home game. I mean look at the Jazz roster? They are not that great..
