The Back Story:
First meeting of the season. The teams split four games last season, with the home team winning each meeting.
The Big Picture:
The Clippers had perhaps their biggest win of the season last night in Denver, against the Nuggets, the second best team in the West. Now, all they have to do is hop on a plane back to LA, and turn around and play the best team in the West the very next day. No big deal, right? The Clippers rode some hot shooting to beat Denver, making 14 of 30 threes in that game. It's nice if you can get those shots to fall, but the Clippers would be wise to try to get the ball inside more against the Thunder. Chris Paul appears to have shaken off the rust from his time off with a hamstring injury, scoring 25 points on 19 shots in Denver. When Paul is aggressively looking to score, the Clippers simply win, so hopefully he'll be aggressive tonight as well. The Clippers had good success against the Thunder last season, beating them twice and playing them tough a third time. I'm not sure if it's matchups or the fact that the Thunder are young, but for whatever reason the Clippers never seemed intimidated against the Thunder last season as they sometimes seemed against other teams. Of course, this Clippers team has no reason to be intimidated by anyone. Blake Griffin had big games against his hometown team last season, averaging close to 27 and 12 while shooting 60% from the floor. The Clippers could definitely use that sort of productivity tonight.

The Antagonist:
The Thunder are good, let's face it. It's hard to find much to criticize on the team. I find myself saying things like "Well, Russell Westbrook isn't that good, and they might have overpaid him" or "They haven't really played a very difficult schedule so far" and those things are true enough. But it doesn't mean this team isn't loaded. When I say something like "Westbrook probably isn't even the second best player on that team" it's as much a reflection of how good James Harden is as a criticism of Westbrook. The combination of Kevin Durant, Westbrook and Harden surely gives Oklahoma City the most explosive perimeter threesome in the league. They don't have much of a post presence on offense, but they don't really need one. They also have terrific role players in Thabo Sefolosha (role: perimeter defender), Kendrick Perkins (role: post defender) and Serge Ibaka (role: shot blocker). As evidenced by their league-best 16-3 record, these guys are good. On paper, they appear to be the best team in the Western Conference. Every other team in the conference has a least one glaring flaw -- but if this team has one, I don't see it.
The Subplots
From the Urban Dictionary:
thunder
slang term for heroin
Thunder is pure evil.

Hope we can stop Restbwook
HVYDRT007 - January 30, 2012
Was it EJ that guarded him in past seasons?
I wonder if Gordon was the reason Westbrook had problems scoring on the Clippers in the past. . .
Hopefully he doesn’t have a field day blowing by Billups and CP.
cassellmania - January 30, 2012
you mean Wussell?
dan73962 - January 30, 2012
Hope to see
THAT SAME Chris Paul show up again
wilriv21 - January 30, 2012
Paul vs Westbrook
Its going to be an interesting matchup at the pg position. Westbrook turns the ball over almost 4 times a game and Paul is leading the league in steals per game. Hopefully that lets us run on the break a lot. Sadly Westbrook is on one of my fantasy teams. I hope the week doesn’t start out with 10+ turnovers just from him…
DannyDodger - January 30, 2012
Worst case for you...
Westbrook plays bad but clippers still lose.
Steve Perrin - January 30, 2012
Not feeling good about this game
Last night game was pretty draining and the Thunder are rested and deep. I think the starting 5 can hang but the Thunder bench will run the Clips’ bench out of the building.
ClipperChuck - January 30, 2012
I agree and bet Bledsoe gets some floor time tonight.
PV Mike - January 30, 2012
That's what I'm thinking.
I would consider starting Bledsoe at PG just to try to offset his quickness, and take the defensive load off of CP3. We also bolster the bench by having Chauncey join Mo.
Thunder team is deep, but somehow I’m not intimidated by them… maybe its because I know Foye can stop the Durantula… lol.
Rob Lo - January 30, 2012
By his I mean Restbwook.
Rob Lo - January 30, 2012
Gotta hope Bledsoe can play some minutes tonight. We’ll need his speed.
FlyByKnight - January 30, 2012
Bledsoe vs Westbrook would be an interesting matchup
speed and athleticism vs speed and athleticism
bestclipfan - January 30, 2012
I hope so
It will also be interesting to see how far Bledsoe has developed. Westbrook could just draw a couple quick fouls and send Bled to the bench.
SilverClip - January 30, 2012
i don't think we will be seeing that matchup
maybe Mo or CP3
dan73962 - January 30, 2012
it will be a battle of who will turnover the ball the least
KidJustin - January 30, 2012
Reggie will turn the balls over the most
PV Mike - January 30, 2012
i'm not sure about that
his sure hand will probably grab all the loose balls flying around
KidJustin - January 30, 2012
Bledsoe’s breakout game last year was against OKC in November. I was there!
Michael White - January 30, 2012
maybe ClipNation should take up a collection to send Mikey again
wilriv21 - January 30, 2012
didn't he play pretty well in that first home win last season?
shap - January 30, 2012
Yes. He went from D-League candidate to backup PG because of that game (jumping over Foye on the depth chart when everyone was healthy.)
Michael White - January 30, 2012
Somehow or another
I’ve never seen Durant catch fire. (I suppose there were a couple of those international games the summer before last, but that was spotty competition). I’m not exactly hoping to finally see it tonight.
SilverClip - January 30, 2012
When Durant is on, he is the most unstoppable player in the league.
PV Mike - January 30, 2012
Agree, Bledsoe should get some minutes tonight to defend Westbrook. Not sure Foye on Durant would work if we go small again. I knew we would win one of the two back to backs..hoping we win tonight to make it 2-0. We’re home which is a plus.
tenkaistar - January 30, 2012
over/under on how many times Blake gets trucked by Perkins tonite?
3?
ill! - January 30, 2012
My prediction is Perkins get into foul trouble and complains about each foul called.
PV Mike - January 30, 2012
BEAT OKC!
82-0 - January 30, 2012
My logic
If we beat the second best team in the West away in Denver, we should be able to man handle the best team at home tonight.
Thunders lost to the lowly Wizards couple weeks ago.
Pats fan in CA - January 30, 2012
lol gonna be a lot harder than how you make it out to be
Yes, solid road win last night. Yes, we have the advantage of home court tonight. But no way in hell we man handle OKC, even if they did lose to Washington.
dulciusXasperis - January 30, 2012
Clippers lost to the T'wolves recently also...
KidJustin - January 30, 2012
without 2 of their 3 best players
shap - January 30, 2012
Love and Rubio played….
Michael White - January 30, 2012
i think you might have confuse the team that was missing his 2 best players
Or i suck at sarcasm
XXDC2XX - January 30, 2012
Oh, I misread it.
Michael White - January 30, 2012
He was talking about the Clippers
CP3 and Butler
ClipperBEAST - January 30, 2012
lol, i read his sarcasm as meaning CP3 and Cookie
i forgot Butler wasn’t playing.
chrisd - January 30, 2012
the key is to contain Russell and Harden
KD will get his 30. Make Russell take jump shots and don’t let OKC run.
dan73962 - January 30, 2012
Imagine
if we can come how get Harden in 2013. Unstoppable

Not going to happen
CP3, DJ, Griffin and Butler will be about 50 million in cap space.
ClipperChuck - January 30, 2012
Debbie Downer
next Chuckie will be saying no Superman
wilriv21 - January 30, 2012
Howard is possible
if you trade for him. Problem would be it would be Griffin for Howard. I’d do it but I know (and understand) many who wouldn’t.
ClipperChuck - January 30, 2012
I also would do that deal
wilriv21 - January 30, 2012
you could S&T him
If he says he wants to come here.
XXDC2XX - January 30, 2012
It would be complex
the Magic would have to turn down presumeably better offers.
And the Clips would have to at minimum trade DJ to them to make it work cap wise.
ClipperChuck - January 30, 2012
They do not have to turn down an offer
If the Clippers and Howard agree to a deal then there are 2 options:
1. We S&T Jordan and a couple of pieces to make it work cap wise with Orlando.
2. We use the amnesty on Gomes and trade DJ to a team wanting a center for a Second Rounders swap.
XXDC2XX - January 30, 2012
Well that's sort of true
Gomes and DJ make 14.5 million next year. I think for the Clips to have max cap space they would need to amnesty Mo. Also unless Howard wants to take less money he’d want a S&T to his next team so he can get a bigger contract.
ClipperChuck - January 30, 2012
it is LA! EVERYONE wants the sunshine and the blondies
wilriv21 - January 30, 2012
Hey Chuck
Remember when I suggested trading Griffin for Durant before the draft? Any thoughts on that now.
In hindsight, I wouldn’t have done it because I don’t see how you get Durant and CP3 (while keeping Randolph) but since that season Durant has developed into a no doubt superstar in the NBA.
Discuss
Michael White - January 30, 2012
I will need proof you said that
jk ;-)
Jax - January 30, 2012
that would have been awesome
Kaman ,ZBO,Durant,EJ, helll of a team with Kaman of the bench.
XXDC2XX - January 30, 2012
DJ of the bench not Kaman.
XXDC2XX - January 30, 2012
I like the team we have now better!
ThaFoX - January 30, 2012 via Android app
Hmm
that’s a tough one. I’d actually prefer Griffin to Durant but its a toss up. Durant’s not the playmaker (like Lebron) or defensive game-changer (like Howard). He doesn’t even really need a CP3 to set him up.
The only 3 players I trade Blake straight up knowing I got the better player back for the next 5 years is CP3, Lebron and Howard.
ClipperChuck - January 30, 2012
but he'll play for pennies on the dollar
to come back to LA. He’ll force he way out of OKC, and OKC will be forced to trade him for Luke Walton.
osamu - January 30, 2012
sounds fair
wilriv21 - January 30, 2012
Lakers would give up Luke?
damnit! that means we got to up the ante…okay OKC….u’ve twisted my arm….Brian Cook AND Ryan Gomes…."whew that was hard to say
KidJustin - January 30, 2012
Howard to Bulls?
Howard now sez he is open to playing for the Bulls. Makes A LOT of sense.
wilriv21 - January 30, 2012
rumor mill said
Adidas was against having Dwight and Rose on the same team, as it puts their two big dogs in the same pound. Not sure about Dwight’s endorsement contract, but thought Rose just inked a big one with them. Wonder if it’d actually hurt his earning ability with Adidas. I’m sure another shoe company would be happy to pick him up if that’s the case though.
osamu - January 30, 2012
i felt awful about last night's game
and the team proved me wrong
maybe they’ll defeat that feeling once again tonight. old habits.
shap - January 30, 2012
anyway we can throw a max offer at Harden?
KillaClip - January 30, 2012 via mobile
oops already answered above
KillaClip - January 30, 2012 via mobile
yes, but the league would throw it back
KidJustin - January 30, 2012
Why are we flying back home for tonight's game?
We should be heading to Oklahoma after stopping in Denver. It’s a short jaunt, and we’d be taking care of an away game. As it is, we’re losing a good chunk of our home court advantage.
Just bitching. It must be very difficult to make an NBA schedule.
SilverClip - January 30, 2012
Congrats on the big win yesterday from a HUGE nuggets fan. Clipp's are a definite contender.
they earned it. the officiating was dreadful but not in either teams favor (aside from the obvious flopping that shouldn’t be called in crunch time. come on c.b., don’t do us like that).
denver never solved the pick and roll and that was 100% george karl’s stubbornness. first off, rudy is a great passer for a TWO GUARD, but he is NOT a p.g., even when ty is out, he should have played the rookie stone at pg on sp3. at least he is a natural point guard on offense, and he is 6’7 so he is not screwed on the switches.
gk refuses to make reactionary moves to problems that are occurring and is in LOVE with small ball, and the clippers (especially with lawson out) are the one team you do NOT play a three guard lineup with galo at 4 and al at 5. gallo is an excellent perimeter defender. not so much as a 4. al is good at one thing and one thing only defensively. pulling the chair on brook (did you honestly think that was illegal brook).
g.k. was too stubborn to replace a rattled al with a highly effective mozgov, and this caused the nuggets to have to double off the pick and roll leaving wide open three balls to superior outside shooters.
ok having said you earned the tough win on the road i have one request and too beef’s. one with the pre-game write up, and one with the team nick name.
my request, we all know your team needs front court depth. will you please take birdman off our hands so that g.k. is no longer tempted to use him? the guy is in his 10thish year and STILL falls for every pump fake. we don’t even want anything for him. maybe some decent sushi since we can’t get it here.
now for the tricky part. my beefs.
how on gods green earth can it even jokingly be said that the nuggets have had an easy schedule when a) the clipps have to win three straight games without the nuggets playing just to be EVEN with denver (meaning they have had practice time and days off that the nuggets have not) and the fact that the nuggets have played 10 games on the road at a .700 clip and were on the heals of a 5 game road winning streak IN THE EAST which i don’t care WHO you play, 5 road games in 7 (one ot one 2ot against melo and n.y.) nights where you increasingly lose hours in a day the farther east you travel is a TOUGH schedule. i suppose a road win at dallas and philidelphia and home blowout victories over the lakers and heat don’t count for anything?
i just say, i want to see the clippers sweep a 5 game eastern road trip in 7 nights and play a back to back to back with two games vs. the lakers before we begin talking about ease of schedule.
the second, at the risk of ruffling feathers (not a hater just a huge nuggets fan) i have a nick name idear. how about flop angeles? three of top floppers at their position in the entire league (cp3, cb and blake) reside on that squad and with all of their athletic skill it just seems that they shouldn’t resort to playing san antonio’s brand of basketball, but again, that is not what won the game for the clipps yesterday. veteran leadership, and insane homecoming by c.b. and g.k. being, dare i say outcoached by… nah, i dare not say vinny. i’ll say g.k. once again outcoached himself.
having said all that, go take it to the thunder for me! you’ve def. got a div. champ and a home court series coming up in the playoffs (especially if you get k-mart). hopefully we can see you in the finals!
Patrick KB. Nugget - January 30, 2012
Clippers finally getting a little respect
Stein has them at #6 in his power rankings.
Hollinger still has them at 14(?)
LJ Hann - January 30, 2012
i have them at 5
;)
Patrick KB. Nugget - January 30, 2012
o.k.c, chicago, denver, miami, clippers.
my nuggets cream the heat every time.
Patrick KB. Nugget - January 30, 2012
Clippers beat the heat last year
and this year
LJ Hann - January 30, 2012
ya i think they are only good against the Leastern conference ;)
Patrick KB. Nugget - January 30, 2012
so how old is the news that K.Mart might come to the clippers
they said billups is trying to get him to come here when his season in china ends
chargerclipperfan - January 30, 2012
a few days
chrisd - January 30, 2012
possibly Billups could give Martin a red envelop to seal the deal
wilriv21 - January 30, 2012
It may come down to turnovers and rebounding tonight.
The Clippers need to limit their turnovers, convert OKC’s turnover into points and finally, WIN the rebounding battle. It won’t end well for them if they cannot control the boards esp. on the defensive glass. Limit the Thunder’s second/third possessions.
I think this is going to be Blake’s signature game this season. We have yet to see an explosive offensive game out of him. He’s long over due for a big game from him.
Lastly, Evans has to be better than Collison on the boards tonight.
