The Back Story:
First meeting of the season. The teams split four games last season, with each winning on their home court.
The Big Picture:
The Clippers are 10-6 on the season. But of those 16 games, only five of them have been on the road (and one of those was in LA against the Lakers). Five road games is the fewest of any team in the NBA, and more importantly, the 28 they have yet to play is the most. So there's that. The fact that the team is 1-4 in those five games is not good, but it's not a huge concern, given the quality of the opponents in those losses. Unfortunately, that logic doesn't bode well for tonight, against the 14-5 Nuggets, who are 7-2 in the mile high altitude. There is some good news though. The Clippers should be well rested for this game, coming off two days of rest. There is also reason to believe that the team will be hitting peak form at some point in the near future -- they looked great in wins over the Heat and Lakers two weeks ago, before Chris was injured his hamstring. In the two games since his return, Paul has not shot well. Hopefully after a couple of games and two more days of practice, he's getting the rust off and the team will start firing on all cylinders again. They looked great for a quarter against Memphis on Thursday, but even that was more about hot shooting than super shard execution. So the team's best basketball is still ahead of them, but hopefully not too far away.

The Antagonist:
A year ago, the Nuggets starters featured Kenyon Martin, Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups, and J.R. Smith was the sixth man. Now Anthony is in New York, Billups is with the Clippers, Smith is in China and Martin is waiting until February 15th to be a free agent after signing with and then leaving a Chinese team. The new Nuggets are challenging the conventional NBA wisdom that every team must be built around a star. The Nuggets were built around Anthony for years, and while the made the playoffs in each of the seven seasons he was in Denver, they also lost in the first round in six of those seasons. The conventional wisdom was that Denver would have to take pennies on the dollar to trade Anthony last season before he became a free agent and left for nothing -- but instead they've got Danilo Gallinari and Timofey Mozgov starting on the team with the second best record in the west, along with Andre Miller (who they got in exchange for Raymond Felton) playing a key reserve role. It goes against everything we thought we knew about building an NBA winner, but somehow the Nuggets are making it work. Instead of relying on one or two stars to carry them night in and night out, the Nuggets play 10 guys and spread the scoring around to whichever five are on the floor at any one time. The 2003-2004 Detroit Pistons are the only team in the last 30 years to win a title without a bona fide superstar, MVP candidate player -- the Nuggets are trying to replicate that formula, but it's not easy to do.
The Subplots
From the Urban Dictionary:

An extremely attractive female.
Dude, that blonde chick is such a nugget...you should go talk to her.

Finally we get some Clippers basketball.
Let’s break another streak tonight. Hopefully Chauncey takes his old team to school. It’s his hometown game so he’ll sure try to.

We have yet to see
Cliipers beat a quality team on the road. What a nice test this is. Im so looking forward to it
arman martikian - January 29, 2012 via mobile
They have also played at places extremely difficult to win.
Utah and Portland are merely difficult to beat because of their crowd. Spurs are experienced and they are extremely difficult to beat at home also. The Laker loss was the fluke in all of this… We should have won, but the Lakers obviously came out to win.
SurfinQ00 - January 29, 2012
I would like how the nuggets have been playing, without a star
if it weren’t for Andre Miller. Gosh I can’t stand that guy, what’s his deal? When he was with the clips, he totally moped for being on “the clippers” and didn’t even look at the talent around him. He was just unhappy with the name on the jersey, totally the opposite of CP3. His comments after spearing Blake were just intolerable, and then he’s coming out this year complaining about playing behind Ty, even though he’s the future of the franchise? Seems like he’s fallen into line a bit after making those comments, but still, I don’t understand what that guy is thinking.
Think they’ve been playing Lawson and Miller together, similar to the Clips 2 PG backcourt, so that should be an interesting matchup.
osamu - January 29, 2012
to be fair to Andre Miller
When he was with the Clippers, that was almost 10 years ago (I know, it’s been that long). Andre was the least of our problems back then (See: Odom, Miles, Dooling, Kandi, Q). Andre’s game has evolved quite a lot since the Clippers days. He’s one of the most under-appreciated pure point guards in the league and I’ve always liked his game.
I don’t like what he did to Blake last year but I don’t blame him. I like the fact that he still has competitive fire and sticks up for his teammates.
dan73962 - January 29, 2012
Just to clear
He wasn’t sticking up for his teammates. He was retaliating for something Blake did to him.
Steve Perrin - January 29, 2012
well miles was traded for Miller
and Odom, Maggette and Brand I thought formed one of the better Clippers rosters and should’ve been playoff contenders. I don’t specifically remember much about that season, but I just remember it being disappointing to say the least.
I agree that Miller is an underrated PG and probably would like his game, if it weren’t for some of the thing he says and does, but I’ve never really considered him someone that sticks up for his teammates. I don’t want to start a controversy with the blake situation again, since I remember most of the portland fans were proud of Miller for what he did to blake, but yea, he was just throwing a hissy fit for being pushed around by blake when going for some rebounds under the basket.
osamu - January 29, 2012
Almost everytime I watch Miller play he does well.
But there has to be more issues that surround him to be traded so often. He does seem aloof and does not talk to his teammates much on or off the floor (ask MILPH).
Strange dude.

About the traveling a day early to Denver to acclimate to the altitude
According to some research donde by a soccer squad it is better to ethier travel the same day of the game, or a couple of weeks ahead when dealing with altitude.
XXDC2XX - January 29, 2012
Interesting....
So you wait until the last second and the altitude has less impact? That seems counterintuitive.

And the person flat out said no. Then I ordered the jumbo deal or whatever and the lady told me she does not advise me to make one. I whimped out and ordered breakfast, the only thing I can eat there.
SurfinQ00 - January 29, 2012

in the 90’s and ate at the jack in the box there the same week that a bunch of people got e coli poisoning from burgers. a few died- i was saved by my decision to just eat the taco portion of the jumbaco though
old666 - January 29, 2012
interesting
yeah, Jack in the Box really had to turn up the marketing to Recover from that one.
oasisman - January 29, 2012
I have never had a problem with Jack in the Box
I know the stories about the whole Kangaroo meat scandal but I can’t recall when that happened and I may have been too young to notice. A lot of people have told me they get sick when they eat at Jack I wonder if it the lettuce or the veggies, which would explain why I don’t get sick because I don’t put them I on my burger.

I heard that they started a resort for Clipper fans
‘Poetland’, or something like that. They imprisoned visitors at the bottom of wells until the meat became tender, and then cooked them into jumbacos. Some rumor that it continues today, and one seemingly harmless Clipper fan secretly leads his companions to their deaths.
Just something I heard, though.

Whoops!!
"(The Hornets are) very professional," Kaman said. "I’m not used to that. No, serious. It was an adjustment. After eight years [with the Clippers], I didn’t know it could be like this. I wasn’t used to it. The way they handle business … they’re up front with you and they tell you what’s going on and what’s going to happen…."
"All you do is take the man’s word and take that he said that no one is going to go anywhere," Gordon told Yahoo! Sports. "… To completely lie like that is something unprofessional."
saxmanager - January 29, 2012
"Chris Kaman is no longer suiting up for the Hornets while he waits to be traded."
“Hornets GM Dell Demps told ESPN.com there were discussions about signing the 7-foot center to a long-term deal when he first arrived from the Clippers in the Chris Paul trade, but "we’ve decided to go in a different direction."
I guess it’s OK since NO told him about it.
saxmanager - January 29, 2012
Old quotes?
Those are the same old quotes from just after the trade, right? I mean, it’s interesting and all, and Kaman has never been one to mince words, but (a) he was upset at the time and (b) this is old news.

76ers Are Doing The Same
They aren’t the only team doing that. The 76ers right now one of the top five teams in the league do not have a superstar though Igoudala has a Gold Medal. However, I doubt that too many people outside of greater Philly would consider AI a superstar. Even in Philly you would be hard pressed to get more than AI’s fanboys to mention AI and superstar in the same sentence.
I would put AI on about the same level as Nene, probably a bit better.
Buddahfan - January 29, 2012
That's nothing New -see Detroit PISTONS
The 04-07 Pistons also lacked a true Superstar. Ben Wallace was their “star” and his offensive game was worse than D Jordan’s. Yet they went to 2 Straight NBA Finals and One NBA Championship. It has been done before.
By stating “AI” no one knows if you are talking about Iverson or Igoudala.
Denver has Ty Lawson-he’s a star.
oasisman - January 29, 2012
I mentioned Igoudala’s name in the post and then followed within context using AI No reason for anyone to think I was referring to Iverson when I used AI
Of course the Pistons lacked that superstar but that is only because the SMSM never incorrectly considered Billups a Superstar in his prime.
Steve already mentioned the Pistons so no need to mention them again.
Buddahfan - January 29, 2012
I hope
we destroy Miller. Im still super pissed off at him after that Portland game. Maybe Blake and Deandre can do like a double posterize slam on him WWE style.
DannyDodger - January 29, 2012
They ally oop to eachother mid air both over Miller.
SurfinQ00 - January 29, 2012
Lets look at their record against good teams
Spurs – Road loss
Bulls – Home loss
Portland – Home win
Houston – Home win
Portland – Road loss
Miami – Home win
Lakers – Home win
Utah – Road loss
Dallas – Home win
Lakers – Road loss
Memphis – Home win
So the Clippers have played 12 of their 16 games against possible playoff teams and are 7- 5 They are 3 – 1 against Toronto, GS, Milwaukee and Minn losing at home to Minn. Note: Minny could squeeze into the playoffs.
However, lets break those 12 down by home and road
They are 6 – 1 at home in those 12 games. Comment: You aren’t going to do much better than that even if playing mostly lottery teams. So it appears that the strength of schedule has not hurt their home record very much if at all.
They are 1 – 4 on the road. Beating GS and losing to four potential playoff teams.
In our small sample of 16 games we can draw some tentative conclusions.
1. Clippers can beat any team at home
2. Clippers have failed to beat any good team i.e. potential playoff team on the road.
There are no dog teams in the WC playoffs
Until the Clippers can show that they can beat good teams, i.e. playoff teams on the road it is hard to see them advancing past the first round in the playoffs.
Buddahfan - January 29, 2012
Good point
At this rate they’ll finish 31-2 at home and 2-31 on the road. Which is .500 for the season and not a playoff team in the WC. I’m exaggerating of course, but until they win some road games, I’m not jumping for joy about this team.
Thretch - January 29, 2012
+.75
I only gave it a plus .75 because while I agree with your conclusion I don’t like your conclusion. LOL
Buddahfan - January 29, 2012
Haha - I don't like my conclusion either
I give myself negative 0.75 for being bi-polar
Thretch - January 29, 2012
Well
If they win road games against bad teams (which they have so far, though they’ve only played one) they win more than that. But yes, they’ll need to win some road games against good teams, or secure home court throughout the playoffs.
Steve Perrin - January 29, 2012
I Thought About That
However, IMO it is highly questionable whether the Clippers can finish in the top four in the WC if they can’t beat good teams on the road. Especially when you consider how light their overall schedule has been compared to their opponents at Staples.
Buddahfan - January 29, 2012
The Lakers have stunk it up on the road even worse at 1-7.
As long as we beat them in the Pacific Division we are going to have home court advantage the first round of the playoffs. As long as we beat the Milwaukee Bucks of teams on the road, we’ll be fine.
chrisd - January 29, 2012
that's a really SSS
It’s only 5 games.
XXDC2XX - January 29, 2012
That Is Why It is "Tentative"
Very small sample but the early road results are far from encouraging
Buddahfan - January 29, 2012
To be fair
in the Utah game we were missing CP3 and Mo (and that win could also be attributed to a schedule loss as they likely dropped it so they could rest for Dallas), and we were still learning how to play when we went against the Spurs. The only really telling losses would be in Portland and @ Lakes, Portland is one of the best home teams in the league so a loss there isn’t surprising and the Lakers played great and CP3 was still rusty so it wasn’t surprising we lost. So even the small sample size doesn’t tell us much other than that Clippers haven’t played much on the road. Today will be a better sign of how the clippers play on the road.
bestclipfan - January 29, 2012
Good Explanations But
I have no idea how good the Clippers will be this season whatever the reasons may be for their early poor road record.
I hope the Clippers win the NBA title this season, but I need to see them play better on the road and see how they handle the increase in games per week before I feel confident about it happening.
Buddahfan - January 29, 2012
you'd also have to consider that the team will improve over the course of the season
Hopefully we are not yet near the finish product. Still load of issues to work out and and a few obvious holes that the FO has to shore up. But still plenty of time. Kenyon Martin would be a good pick up.
BelgianClipper - January 29, 2012
They Should Get Better
You could be correct and I hope you are.
However what about other playoff teams? Can we say that the other 15 have all peaked at this point? Not very likely.
Buddahfan - January 29, 2012
no but many of them have played together for a lot longer then our Clips
so my take would be that our improvement could be bigger then most teams.
Anyway: some teams will have peaked before play-offs. Other will during play-offs. Think Grizzlies vs Spurs last season. So if the Clips can get into the play-offs comfortably and healthy whilst building up chemistry I don’t care if they are 1st or 8th seed.
Anyway to my feeling we are fringe contender at best this season (or the FO should pull some major moves). Second round play-offs is par for course.

I am a little worried about this game.
I think our a chillies hill will show again in this game (lack of bench).
mustang6944 - January 29, 2012
Tough game...
This is when we need CP3 and Billups veteran leadership. I feel this will be a close game, but I can’t predict an outcome right now. If the Clippers play hard and smart, they will have a great chance.
Hengtime81 - January 29, 2012
We will see if Clippers are contenders or not in the next 4 games
@ DEN (Sun) – prove we can beat quality teams on the road
vs OKC (Mon) – prove we can beat the best team in the NBA on 2nd night of b2b
@ UTA (Wed) – prove we can win in Utah (I fear UTA vs LAC match-up in the playoffs)
vs DEN (Thu) – watch out for this trap game at home, especially if LAC wins the 1st match-up
dan73962 - January 29, 2012
verdict
4-0: yeah LAC is a title contender this year
3-1: yeah LAC is one of the 4 best teams in the WC
2-2: LAC will make the playoffs but that’s about it
1-3: LAC better watch out for that 8 seed (and Minnesota!)
0-4: Yeah well, it’s the same old Clippers
dan73962 - January 29, 2012
.+90
ISTM that it will be a bit premature to call the Clippers a title contender this year if they go 4 – 0 in the next four games.
The reason: Clippers injury history.

I am IMPRESSED. Way to go Denver,…. way to buck that conventional wisdom that you need superstars to win. I said it last year and I’ll say it again, the Knicks screwed the pooch when they traded almost all of their assets to overpay for Carmelo Anthony.
Rob Lo - January 29, 2012

Surprised with start to season
After the trade for Chris Paul, spaced out schedule and all those home games I thought the Clips would be better than 10-6 at this point. If the Clips plan to contend for WCF and Finals they will need to find ways to win on the road.
wilriv21 - January 29, 2012
10-6 seems about right to me
I figured everyone would be rusty with no training camp, CP was out of shape then injured his hammy, and the team still held their own while he was out. . .
This week will be the next step toward figuring if this team is a contender, with the first step being the b2b wins against Heat and Lakers.
cassellmania - January 29, 2012
+1
only game they lost which they should have won is Minny. Plus they won at home of the Lakers,Heat and Dallas. Not hard to imagine on forehand the clips dropping one of those games

arman martikian - January 29, 2012 via mobile
They never will.
With NBA fans today, you will be hated if you are a good team. Just look at the Heat, they are a stellar team yet you either love them or hate them. Good teams will never be liked aside from bandwaggoners or die hard fans. If and when we are bad, we are not given love and respect for obvious reasons. So no matter what we do, unless we become an average team, we won’t exactly be appreciated. It is a bit sad, but I’m fine with it just like you are!

Steve! Nice preview man.
Been looking forward to this game all weekend, all season! Clippers are really fun to watch, as are my Nuggets. I expect both of these teams to be in the playoffs (maybe even face each other at some point?) so this will be a good test for both squads.
I can’t think of a bad match up out there. And I know that Billups will get a well-deserved standing ovation when he’s announced to his home town crowd. Can’t believe the Nuggets have traded him twice in his career, bittersweet homecoming. I still own my #7 Billups jersey from the WCF run … that dude is awesome. He took time when he was traded back to Denver from Detroit to sign autographs all over town. He complimented by Broncos hat at one session (his favorite team) and I tried to give him the hat, was brand new. He laughed as he obviously wouldn’t want some random dudes hat, but he did point it out a couple times. Billups will have a special place in Denver fans’ hearts … even though he was traded away twice for wrong reasons.
Will be fun to see how Arron Afflalo, AAA, and Lawson play against CB1 aka Mr. Big Shot. Hope DeAndre doesn’t have his usual big game against Denver and I hope the Nuggets contain Mo Williams and the other outside shooters … Nuggets give up way too many open looks from outside …
Almost game time! Should be a good one.
