The Back Story:
First meeting of the season. The teams split two games last year, each winning at home.
The Big Picture:
Although blowout losses to the Spurs and Jazz were far from pretty, through a dozen games the Clippers could at least say that they hadn't lost any games that they should have won. Chicago is one of the top teams in the league, and losing in San Antonio, Utah and Portland is par for the course, as those are just not easy building in which to win. That changed on Friday when the Clippers lost to Minnesota at home. There were mitigating circumstances to be certain - Chris Paul was missing his fourth straight game with a strained hamstring, Caron Butler was likewise unavailable with a hyperextended knee, and when Mo Williams was ejected with over six minutes left, the Clippers were missing three of their top six players down the stretch. So it's not surprising that they lost the game, though it is disappointing. The single biggest adjustment that they need to make is to get Chris Paul back on the floor. Sure, they need to rotate better on defense and get on the same page (or any page really) on their pick and roll coverage, but let's face it, having Paul out there will cover up a multitude of sins. Especially on offense, having Paul on the floor gives the Clippers a half court offense by default, but without him they are just taking a bunch of jump shots. But hopefully it's not worth worrying too much about how they look without Paul, assuming they're going to have him. Of more concern right now is the mini-slump that Blake Griffin finds himself in, but even that will get better with Paul back.

The Antagonist:
Do they still have NBA teams in Canada? That whole Vancouver thing is done with, I know that. I guess there's still a team in Toronto, or at any rate that's what the schedule says. How would anyone know? It's not like the Raptors are ever on TV, or, you know, relevant in any way. Only two seasons ago, the Raptors won 40 games. A couple seasons before that, they were actually in the playoffs. But they've quickly become one of the worst teams in the league -- and least compelling. Who of interest is on the Raptors? Andrea Bargnani? Not really. Maybe Ed Davis -- he seems like he could be a player some day (though as of now he's in a bit of a sophomore slump). The Raptors are 4-12 on the season, they've lost seven straight and nine of their last ten. Two of their four wins on the season have come against the Cavaliers. This is not an interesting (or very good) team.
The Subplots
From the Urban Dictionary:
raptor
A drunk female in high-heels. Usually characterized by lots of stumbling and screeching.
Watch out, its the first Friday of the school year. The freshmen raptors are out in full force.

VDN vs Casey
I’m part of the contingent that really wanted Casey over VDN. He’s got a lot less to work with in Toronto but they have already begun to improve defensively (from 30th to 21st) quite a bit this year even though they have the same roster.
Also no mention of former Raptor now Clipper Reggie Evans? For shame Steve, for shame.

I've always liked Rasual,
he was pretty good in that Trina video, and seemed like a good guy that was willing to work hard and put up shots. I seriously didn’t know why he went into so much of a slump with the clips, and really hasn’t seemed to recover from it.
osamu - January 22, 2012
rasual wasn't too bad during that year he started for us
shot happy and all, but he played decent d, even went for his share of blocks, and hey he has the clipper single season 3 pointers made record, doesn’t he?
still he was part of the sf problem, not the solution

really want this win
being at that wolves game has left an exceptionally bitter taste in my mouth ever since

blowout win nothing else is acceptable
This team needs to develop a killer instinct. Even if Paul doesn’t play Blake Griffin has to step his game up and put his foot on the throat of a team and crush all hope. This is a physical team they need to take it to a whole new level.

Enjoyed the recap
One quibble – I don’t think Compton is in the city section.

Are white players considered international?
PV Mike - January 22, 2012
Depends
As ClipperBeast mentioned below, players in that category are not considered international.
But for me, anybody that is born outside of the United States could be considered international. Players such as Andrei Bargnani, Andrei Kirilenko, and Steve Nash.
JackduhSun - January 22, 2012
I dont think so
Jason Kidd, Josh McRoberts, Luke Walton, Luke Ridnour, etc. are white, not international
ClipperBEAST - January 22, 2012
arrggh... supposed to be a reply to PV Mike
ClipperBEAST - January 22, 2012
Just a joke regarding the writeup stating the Clippers do not have any international players.

Too Many game Time Decisions For This One
The best player on each team CP3 and Bargnani will be game time decisions
Regardless the Clippers should have no trouble winning this game.
The only question is will it be over by the end of the third quarter or middle of fourth quarter. It could be a lot earlier if CP3 plays and Bargnani doesn’t
To tell the truth, nothing to see here.
Buddahfan - January 22, 2012
We need to win this one easily
No Mo, Blake, Butler, CP3, or Chauncey in the last 6 minutes of the 4th. Need to keep our team rested, and ready to slaughter the Lakers on Wednesday.
NewCavsfan - January 22, 2012
Let's just destroy the Raptors.
Watch out for Amir Johnson. Glad that Jones is playing over Cook lately. At least in the limited minutes Jones is blocking shots.
tenkaistar - January 22, 2012
Johnson Right Now Is A Cripple
Bad right hand and wrist. Probably bandaged again today
Bad knee which he re-injured Friday
Other miscellaneous injuries
Nothing to see here at this time
Buddahfan - January 22, 2012
that’s great for us. Ed Davis is kind of raw but played well last season.
tenkaistar - January 22, 2012
Heading out to staples center right now!
JUMBACO! Go clips!
Controversysells - January 22, 2012 via mobile
Beat Toronto
and out of the 4 remaining NFL teams the only team I even kinda like is the Ravens.
wilriv21 - January 22, 2012
I like the 49ers
partially because Davis’ close proximity to San Fran, and also because I like the story lines with that team (it has been forever since they got to the super bowl, they sucked last year, first year coach who is from San Fran, and winning with a defense and a slightly over mediocre QB). Plus a Ravens vs 49ers battle of the Harbraughs Super Bowl would be awesome.
bestclipfan - January 22, 2012
Harbaugh is not from San Fran
boltsfan21 - January 22, 2012
Well he went to high school at Palo Alto
bestclipfan - January 22, 2012
And he coached Stanford
So he has a lot of ties to the bay. I hope the brothers go against each other in the finals.
shay - January 22, 2012
Yeah, he spent his last two years of high school there
His dad was a coach, so he moved there when his dad got a job at Stanford. But he mostly grew up in Ann Arbor, and went back there for college. It’s not like he’s a local boy who was a huge fan of the team and then became its coach.
boltsfan21 - January 22, 2012
No CP3
Brad Turner
He better be back Wednesday. Some day-to-day injury. At least Butler is back for todays game.
dulciusXasperis - January 22, 2012
I hate JP as much as the next guy, but...
hammies almost always take time. Playing with even the littlest twinge back there hurts like hell, and they’re extremely easy to re-tweak and/or make worse. Expecting him back in less than a week was probably unrealistic from the get-go. But since he practiced yesterday, I fear this means he felt something this morning, which could put Weds/Thurs in doubt.
boltsfan21 - January 22, 2012
Yeah I bet you're right.
Well, he has a good 3 days to rest before Lakers. Hope he’s back for that game!
dulciusXasperis - January 22, 2012
yuppp exactly
I mean he was limping really badly on the bench..makes me think the severity of the injury may have been undermined somewhat?
Sigh..
JJClipperfan - January 22, 2012
Another random comment, but it made me smile because it bashed Bynum.
“Lakers fans need to take Bynum off this pedestal as if he is this amazing trading piece everyone wants, No one wants to trade their star player for Bumknees Mcgee, simple as that”
SurfinQ00 - January 22, 2012
why the LakeShow does not ante up to trade for Howard is puzzling. Team with aging Bryant now and have as centerpiece when Bryant is no longer.
wilriv21 - January 22, 2012
Is Butler back today?
Someone mentioned he was, but is he actually playing?
As long as we have him I think we will be fine.
NewCavsfan - January 22, 2012
As long as Rasual keeps his Raptors jersey on.
PV Mike - January 22, 2012
Yes
Both Times and OC Register’s beat guys tweeted that CP3 is out but Caron is playing.
boltsfan21 - January 22, 2012
Ok great
This game should be in the bag. We are better at just about every position.
NewCavsfan - January 22, 2012
Ralph The Mouth
must win game for Clips
wilriv21 - January 22, 2012
I agree
No excuse losing at home to Barg-less Raps.
cassellmania - January 22, 2012
As much as I want to say the Clippers should win easily
I just dont agree especially with the way we have been playing defense..
I expect it to be fairly close
