Clippers 102 - Lakers 94 - Why the Clippers mortgaged the farm!

I think I got that line from Ralph's twitter feed after the Heat game....

Check in with the enemy

I think this is why the team made trade! To win these types of games. Yes, I had a tough time thinking about Eric Gordon and Chris Kaman being gone. But tonight's game makes all those feelings go away! Here's my summary of what I saw:

  • Rebounding. This was a key to victory. With Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum on the floor we needed to control/limit their offensive boards. Blake Griffin seemed like he was more committed than any other game this season to rebound. and ended up with 14 boards. Reggie Evans also did some dirty work on the boards, especially the offensive glass. 16 mins and he got 6 offensive boards against the 7 footers. Now if they could just commit to this type of rebounding every game!
  • DJ early foul trouble. As always, DeAndre Jordan has got to stay out of foul trouble early in the games. Tonight he got called for two early fouls and was pulled. The Lakers took advantage as the middle opened up for Kobe Bryant and Pau and Bynum did some damage on the smaller Blake and Evans. DJ came back in the second half and was more disciplined and played solid D on Bynum in the block.
  • Butler/Foye/Gomes on Bean. Bean started out slow in the 1st half and only had 11 pts going into the half. He still got his 40, with most coming in the 3rd. VDN went with the BFG defensive threat (Caron Butler / Randy Foye / Ryan Gomes) against him. I think only Gomes had some success against him. Foye hounded him, but he was just too small and Bean easily shot over him.
  • Chippyness. Near the end of the 1st, the game got heated when Darius Norris kept his dribble waaaaay after the foul had been called. FSN showed that Blake gave the rookie a little nudge when he dunked after the whistle. Coach Mike Brown got a tech, and words were exchanged between the players. Morris then took his aggression out by shooting a 50 footer to end the 1st. Then in the 2nd half as the Lakers where making their run, Metta World Peach and Blake got into it after MWP would not let go of the ball when the whistle had blown. Double techs for MWP and BG. Another "playoff atmosphere" type game!
  • Closing quarters. Being a Clippers fans, I have come to dread the end of any quarter. This is when any big lead or close game is given up by the Clippers. I am slowly getting used to NOT having such feelings anymore! CP3 closed out the 1st with a beautiful fade away And 1. The end of the 1st half the lead was stretched. Not even the dreaded 3rd Quarter Meltdown has been seen this season! It did get a bit nervous with Bean taking over the 3rd, but every time they got close CP3 had an answer. He even put the game on ice with another beautiful fadeaway J in the fourth, and he left the game right after that.
  • Oatmeal Raisin. For what seemed eternity (in reality it was only 6 minutes) our pal Brian Cook (aka Oatmeal) made an appearance. He instantly clanked two open 3s, blocked a Pau layup and tried to do one of the worst up and under shots in NBA history! How can Try Thompkins and/or Solomon Jones be any worse than that VDN! Oatmeal did not get off the pine the rest of the game.
  • Bean. He got his 40, but really, is that MBrown's offensive strategy? Allow the guy to get his outside of your offensive scheme? I mean he has bynum and Pau to help, yet the guy chucks the 2nd worst (see above for the first) shot of the night from about 35 feet! This won't last all season.
  • CP3. What can I say. I was not a believer at first. Maybe it was because I did care much for watching the games against the Hornets. But man, was I WRONG! CP3 is DA TRUTH!...He probes that paint area unlike anyone I have ever seen. Nash comes close but he zips past the paint, CP3 takes his sweet time in there, it's like the whole area is open space even when he's got 2-3 guys within inches of him. It's beautiful to watch. He got a career season high in points and he kept the team afloat during that 3rd quarter run. That 35 footer to beat the 24 (after Evans' offensive board) was just out of this world! Sounds like the strained hamstring might be an issue if not taken care of properly. Resting him on Monday is crucial as the lowly Nets should be easily manhandled, esp if Mo returns.
  • Gameball: CP3
  • Unsung hero: Reggie Evans
  • Quote to note: "If they're going to play after the whistle, I'm going to defend after the whistle." --Blake Griffin, on the contact he made with Lakers rookie Darius Morris after a foul had been called.
Great win tonight for ClipperNation! A busy week coming up with very little rest!

Good times in Clipperland

Thats what I’m talking about

What’s that Chris Sheridan? The Clippers will go 0-3 this week?
WRONG.

Did the Clips bet the farm?

Eric Gordon, 2012 Minnesota unprotected first round pick, Al-Farouq Aminu. Yeah, I’d say so.

Well, when you put it that way…

what about the Kaveman?

Yeah, he was included in the deal but I left him out because we’re talking about the farm meaning young pieces, right? Kaman is what he is but those 3 other players haven’t reached their full potential yet.

If the trade hadn't been done

Kaman would be huge on this team. There would be no Reggie, for many reasons, but Kaman would be the backup big we long for.

It's going to be important to see what happens to CP3 2 years from now

if he stays, it was easily the best trade in Clipper history. If he leaves? It’s still a good trade, just not too happy to see Gordon go.

Regardless, I bet 2 years from now even if CP3 leaves, most of us will probably be saying “I would still do that trade in a heartbeat..”

I'm saying that now!

Haven’t had this much fun in my 20+ years as a Clipper fan.

Fun?

Last season was fun. This season is more serious.. :|

+1

Whether he stays or goes, it was worth it. But he isn’t going anywhere. This team can pretty much play with anybody now, and it’s only going to get better with trade deadline and/or offseason moves to fix the bench. He’s in a major market with great young running mates and will be making deep playoff runs soon. Blake will extend next offseason, and CP3 will resign in the summer of ’13.

But..

would it be worth it if he remains healthy this year but gets hurt all of next year and leaves?

No question, if healthy all two years makes it a good trade, but does have some sort of injury big or small would it be worth it? He’s a great player that changes the atmosphere and marketing, but are the asset we traded if that DOES seemingly happen.

Too complex Jack...

You’re doomscape has too many qualifiers.
Clips win = CP3 stays. Simple math.

We're Clippers fan swami;

History has shown that we’ve been cursed with the unfortunate, whether it be a mystical myth or the powerless hands of Jason Powell. Clips win= CP3 stays. Clips lose CP3, and well… who knows.

Only way CP3 leaves is because the Clippers did something horribly wrong

if the Clips do what they are suppose to (add some quality bench players) win some playoff games (series?) then they have every advantage of retaining CP3. He’s a loyal guy, he has DJ and BG locked up for the foreseeable future and the Clips have all the built in advantages of signing your own free agents.

Only hole going forwards is SG and backup C.

I like Billups at the 2, but he is 35 years old after all. I would love to get a big SG (DeMar DeRozan and Landry Fields are both from L.A.) but I don’t see how we would steal one of those from another team.

As for backup C, wait until the offseason. We will undoubtedly have veterans who want to sign up to play with CP3.

Why wait until the offseason

Clips have the cap exception and trade exception. They aren’t that far off from being elite contenders. JR Smith and Rasheed Wallace are viable additions at some point in the season. Some teams are going to go into the “not this season” mode and look to shed salary so the Clippers need to be opportunistic and go grab the players they need. The NBA window doesn’t stay open very long, you don’t really ever know how much time you have so you better be aggressive when you do know its open.

I agree that if a good opportunity presents itself

we should take it. You know how I feel about Smith, but I am definately a supporter of Pryzbilla/Sheed/Kenyon or another backup C.

I am hesitant to add another guard simply because we have 5 in the rotation as it is when Bledsoe returns. I am open to moving Bledsoe/Mo and Foye, as long as it is for the right return., and then adding another guard at that point.

I just think that mid-season, making a trade and two FA acquisitions could shake up chemistry a bit. I would prefer to make one more move this season: a backup big, whether he come in a trade or as a FA.

Its a bad philosophy

first off how much chemistry is there? Whatever chemistry Gomes/Foye/Cook have isn’t working anyways. I don’t care if our backup wing (JR Smith) is a bit crazy. If he was our franchise player/team captain/taking up 25% of the cap then yea then I’d be worried. But he’s a guy who doesn’t have a long term deal who has played with our two best decision makers and is vastly superior skillwise to Randy Foye/Bledsoe/Gomes who would be making just 2.5 million (which is a 50% discount of what it would cost if he had no character issues) prorated for the remainder of the season. Its a low risk high reward proposition.

JR played pretty briefly with Paul a long time ago

I feel like if the Clippers maintain their pace, and finish 44-22, then this unit should be kept intact going into the postseason.

They won't go 44-22 with the current roster

the schedule only gets harder with all the back to backs and road games. They’ve also been healthy with the same starting 5 the first 9 games. The regular season requires a deeper roster (you can go 7 or 8 deep in the playoffs) of maybe 9-10 players. To make it out with a good playoff seeding the Clips need to add those 1-2 rotation quality (not rotation by default quality) players.

what percent of the crow was wearing red white and blue?
hope to see Mo taking CP3s minutes on Monday to rest the hammy
+1

We won’t need him if mo plays

I'm giving my JUMBACO to CP3 for this game even if he wants to give his JUMBACO to Reggie (who was great too).
JUMBACOs all around
The power of the JUMBACO compels you
Stay JUMBACO, my friends
gotta have a JUMBACO party somewhere

I would host it if I were in LA.

Jumbaco City
not that I want to copy the lakers

but a free JUMBACO would trump them all day, everyday (which all the fans would’ve gotten under the “free tacos” rules in this game)

When's Bledsoe back?
End of January/Early February.
the straw that broke the camel's back

first Blake witht he assist on DJ and then Paul setting up Blake

LOVED how the Clips outlasted the Lakers run when they cut it to 4

I think an important note is

that the Clippers seem to share the basketball better. The plays are ugly (sometimes I can’t stay the Griffin isos because it’s not an easy basket) but I’ve noticed the basketball touches each players hands pretty fairly compared to the Lakers.

11 more days till we play them again
We'll beat them again
as long as CP3 is healthy by then, mos def
Oshley had a great off -season

Paul, Billups and Reggie!

don't forget dj
they matched

I think most teams would have matched that

Butler
how can I forget Butler
lol

He often gets overlooked, because of everything else on the court. That’s how he’s able to make the opponent pay.

anyone still want to fire Vinny?
for Larry Brown?

sure

never wanted to

like it or not, no team going to can a coach half way through the season, unless the team is really not meeting expectations. And would say we are ahead of schedule for the moment.

still was mad with some of his rotations

mostly when cook was playing, but seemed like played a lot of the bench early, and CP3 played almost all the 3rd and 4th till he got hurt. I hope that didn’t contribute to the injury.

Not a Vinny fan and would like to see a real coach come in in the offseason...

But what choice does he have other than Cook?
My guess is the reason Trey Thompkins and Solomon Jones are not in Vinny’s rotation is because they don’t play well in practice. Which means… right now, they’re probably not any good.

True

Cook is the vet, probably even plays better in practice and isn’t missing open looks. But missing open looks and not doing much else right should warrant some (whether it be small or big or shared) playing time with Cook.

Yes, please

Imagine how good we’d be with a real coach.

Another new thread up
what is Jumbaco?

and I hope Cp3 is OK

its a jumbo jack, two tacos, fries and a drinkj
it doesn't exists, no?
im sure if you go to jack in the box and ask them for a jumbaco ...

theyll be annoyed since it will be the 936th time they heard it today

lol

like the workers at caesars palace, I want to ask them if it’s the real caesar’s palace

first you take a jumbo jack...

and then you add 2 tacos…

WHAT DO YOU GET???

JUMBACO JUMBACO JUMBACO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mo will be a huge need Monday
CP3: 27 against the Heat and 33 against the Lakers? The guy is just unbelievable.

But I still think Derek Fisher is better… LOL Sorry I just couldn’t say that with a straight face.

Also I question Vinnys rotations...

Did Chris Paul even get a rest in the 3rd and 4th quarter? And Billups and Butler were on the bench wayyyy too long..
I think the team will be better off when we have a better coach

Jerry Sloan? Phil Jackson? Larry Brown?
I dont know

but VDN is in way over his head.

i don't want to run the triangle offense with jackson
He had to leave CP3 in there

if the Lakers didn’t make their 3rd quarter run then he probably would have given them rest.

BS

Billups was on the bench for how long? Also, the run was because of Kobes Brilliance who Butler was actually doing a good job on…but for some reason he got an extended rest while the short armed foye got burned

He mentioned Butler was having back issues

he was trying to give him some rest.

Injuries are a part of the game...

it felt like much too long…and in general this season have you ever had confidence or an understanding of VDNs rotations?

if a guy can't go, he can't go

if he can only go for 10 more minutes, you save those 10 minutes

Totally agreed

No idea why VDN can’t correct his own mistakes more quickly.

Kobe got white hot while Foye was guarding him. And Foye was screwing up on the other end too. Yet VDN just sat on his thumbs.

Everyone with a brain knows that you can’t guard Kobe with a shorter guy. Chauncey is the only shorter guy who guards him effectively.

And what is VDN’s infatuation with Cook?!?!?!

I think Foye actually played pretty good defense on Kobe

I don’t think anyone could have stopped Kobe he was just in the mode. And nobody is giving VDN the credit he deserves for making adjustments on Kobe starting in the 4th that pretty much erased Kobe from the game until the last few minutes of the game when it was pretty much over.

Butlers long armed defense is much more effective...

plus they waited too long to double Kobe

No he didn't

Not sure where you’re getting that. Did he work hard? Yes. But working hard doesn’t matter when you’re totally overmatched. It’s not as if Foye is known as a plus defender. He’s way too short and not strong enough to stick Kobe. It’s a bad matchup that they took advantage of in the 3rd.

You think it’s a coincidence that Kobe scored more in the 3rd than he did in the first half? It’s not exactly news that you have to put a long and physical defender on Kobe. Kobe’s a jump shooter. If you stick someone 6-3 on him, he’ll just rise up and shoot right over him. Kobe knows Foye has no chance blocking his shot. Might as well have been shooting in the gym by himself.

why did they wait so long to double Kobe?

Knowing that none of his other teammates werent doing anything worth a squat

Um those shots were unbelievable
Those shots at the end were

after he was already on fire.

You’re making the same mistake Lakers fans make. You remember the ridiculous shots but you’re forgetting the others. They forget the tons of misses. You’re forgetting the easy mid range jumpers he had early in the 3rd that got him going.

Once he had those, it was too late for anyone to stop him.

Good points - I concede

Foye is too short

Kobe stuffing Foye and putting him on his ass said it all.

Also. I cringe whenever Foye, Gomes, and Cook are in at the same time. Just yuck!

As SP stated in the preview

it’s fools gold. The team taking 5-10 footers is always going to beat the team shooting contested long two pointers over the long haul. But Foye fouling Kobe on 3 pt attempts is just stupid.

He got a rest when he strained his hammy. Blake was in the whole 2nd half also.
But, isn't that the risk?

I’m not saying it was the cause of the injury, but when you play tired, you get injured. I hate to see guys in too long, especially guys with injury history… like Blake and CP.

He would have played the same minutes as Kobe

if not for the injury. Not saying Brown is a master at substitution, but coaches clearly want/need to ride their horses in big games.

There is a risk at all times. More mins increases the possibilities of injury, but...

playing big minutes and putting your team on your back is what superstars do. With Mo out, there was a greater need to play Paul extended minutes. The Lakers could have had Ray Allen backing up Kobe, and he’s still play 40+ minutes. By the time the playoffs come, playing 40-44 minutes a night is pretty common. This was a playoff type game due to the atmosphere, and it’s something that players like Griffin and DJ, and even players like Gomes and Foye need to experience, so that they’re ready when it is playoff time.

It was unfortunate that he strained his calf, but he’s was also ready to go back in the game because he is that competitive. We have not really had that with our star players in the past. They would milk as much time off as they possibly could.

they would either play Ray at SF, or Kobe at PG
but I get your points
I'm ok with them playing more last night

considering they had a day off between their next game. He was at 39mpg last night which is only slightly more than he usually plays. Without Mo and the lack of credible options off the bench it made sense to give Paul a few more minutes than usual.

The time off had something to do with it as well.

It was a huge game that could go a long way for us psychologically that would be followed by a day off. Maybe we don’t play them as long if it was the first game of a b2b2b.

According to ESPN...

Clippers F Brian Cook left midway through the second quarter with a sprained left ankle

He didn't play in the second half

but he could of come back according to Dain Blanton.

When you can replace CP3 to close out games with CB1,You are too deep in HOF point guards!

Chauncey is the best closer on most teams, and will hit as many or more game winners and or foul shots than anyone in the clutch.3rd all star point guard coming off the bench is sick.Get Rasheed out of retirement, and its game set match Clips!

I give up, Jovan Buha is an idiot!

http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/notebook/_/page/lobcityledger-120114/los-angeles-clippers-vs-los-angeles-lakers

we are C- team apparantly

Don't think you understood his point

He was saying the 3rd qtr performance was a C-

I'm not so sure

Reads like he’s just giving the Clips a C-. If so, that’s insane.

No I'm pretty sure he is just grading the third quarter
and what about the 3 other quarters?
Well, considering the title says "Third Quarter Not The Charm"

I think it’s pretty clear it’s the 3rd qtr. The qtr that let the Lakers back in the game.

Well, he gives the Lakers a B-

And that’s not a 3rd quarter grade, it’s a game grade.

This is only of mild interest, but why a commentator just grade a single quarter? I think he’s saying that the Clips’ 3rd quarter tarnishes their entire game.

What’s more important, imo, is that the Clips withstood a beasting Kobe. I don’t think anyone could have stopped him, not for that spurt. So give Kobe more credit, Buha, and give the Clips some credit for winning anyway.

Yeah and that section is titled "Los Angeles Lakers"

Notice the B- isn’t titled “Los Angeles Clippers”?

For your viewing pleasure

JUMBACO

should be the headline for that one

awesome!

Remember that other great pic. DeAndre was dunking over two guys…..against the Lakers. I need to save that and this pic.

Jumbaco! Jumbaco! Jumbacooooo!

When does Bledsoe return?
end of Jan at earliest
Got 2 of the best floor generals in the game, coach is perfect.

Butler is a stopper,Griffin and DJ will get better every day,and with some backups like Sheed with Evans,we could dominate

CP3 on his hammy

Chris Paul on his left hamstring: “I tried to go back out there. [Trainer] said it was in my best interest not to go back.”

I’m thinking it’s not that serious and he’ll be fine the rest of the season.

And the funniest and idiotic comment of the night goes

to someone on Yahoo!:

If Kupchak can somehow pry former starter PG Mo Williams or SG Foye away from the Clippers, that would take a lot of the scoring burden off Kobe. Clippers do lack size and could really use the Lakers’ 6’11" McRoberts.
id give foye up for mcroberts
mo aint going anywhere until he officially asks out

and even then why trade him?

if he asks out?

I would olbige Mo if he wanted a trade.

we'll trade you vinny del negro for mcroberts and a bag of peanuts.
keep in mind the peanuts are the most valuable thing in that trade
Don't think McRoberts is more valuable than Mo.
What about just foye for mcbob?

it did say mo OR foye

there's a reason these 2 teams dont make trades

they dont want to help each other.

McBob was as bad as Foye
McBob isn't good

He’s really less valuable than Foye. I admit I’m a Foye fan, but still. Lakers and Clips should not make trades…it hurts much more when it bites the Clips in the ass. The last thing the Clips want is for Foye suddenly being a 6th man on the Lakers and shooting lights out for them. Knowing the Lakers luck, that would probably happen, while McBob plays 5 min a game.

Foye becoming the Lakers' 6th man

is the best thing that could possibly happen for the Clippers. Addition by subtraction for us, death-by-chucker for them.

L'il Chucker and Big Chucker...

The ball would NEVER make it inside. The all-time backwards offense.

Um

not worried at all about Foye coming back to bite us in the ass. Ain’t going to happen.

and McRob is a solid backup big. He’s very active, has some skill and he’s not Brian Cook.

McBob had a horrible game

But at least he doesn’t feel compelled to go one-on-one, dribble around for 10 seconds, and then take a step back from just inside the arc pretty much every time he touches the ball. I’d make the McBob-for-Foye trade in less time than it took me to type this post.

Off topic

Are you on Chargers blog Bolts from the Blue?

Anyway, our opinions on Foye differ. I think DJ Mbenga is btr than McBob.

You're nuts.

McBob >>>>>>> McBenga

Certifiably!

McBenga can’t get a McJob for a McReason.

Yeah, I'm on Bolts from the Blue some

But I comment very rarely. This blog is smart dudes who know basketball. That one … not so much.

Haha

yes, absolutely true

If they think R.Foye can take a scoring burden off K.Bryant,

They have another thing coming.
No offense to the talents of R.Foye.

Like Kobe would pass it to them.
i kinda want a jumbo jack, then i want to add 2 tacos....

what do i get?

Ohhh i was wondering for the longest lol

thanks

morris

we played Norris (cole) last game. Definitely thought his 3 was going to be the end of the clips. I remember last season, seemed like we had at least 3 50 footers come back and bite us in the ass.

Reggie Evans should be a preacher

not only is he grabbing everything around him, but he’s inspiring Blake to hit the boards. Love it.

our GM did a great job this year
Somewhat makes up for last season..

Foye, Gomes, Vinny Del Negro, Cook…

Yea last years offseason was horrible

watching Foye, Gomes and Cook turns on stomach. No one really pays attention to VDN so at least he’s bearable. Hurry back Mo. Also pray for CP3.

Here's what I like

for VDN to play the next few games… Obviously CP3 is going to want to come back sooner than needed because he is such a competitor. The guy can’t even sit down after getting hurt. I hope that if Mo can play, give the starter minutes to Mo, and watch how Mo plays. If VDN feels as if CP3’s injury can be persistent or should rest a little bit more, let Foye handle the duties at 1. Obviously I’d like to have CP3 back, but even if it’s a small injury, I want CP3 to rest and not have something small turn big.

Yep set up by last year
ROFL

wow you are so desperate. Foye Gomes and Cook set up this off-season? You are effing nuts.

I think being relatively frugal set up this offseason

We added role players(and cook, for some reason) that last year’s team desperately needed. Now, they are extra on this team (you have to admit, we are in much different shape than last year. the pre-CP3 Clippers are built to contend in 3 years. The CP3 era team is win now). If the FO had pulled a New Jersey and signed Travis Outlaw to a massive deal… shudders

So the fact the Clips avoided only the worst FA signing

is okay?

And frugality had nothing to do with it, not when CP3 was traded for all existing assets that had nothing to do with the summer 2010 free agents.

EJ, Kaman, Aminu and the Minnesota pick were already tradeable assets no matter what the Clips did in 2010.

Look, I'm not saying that last offseason was great

but we signed a couple of players and filled gaps without limiting ourselves going forward.

Those moves didn’t clear the way for CP3m but they did clear the way for Butler and DJ and Billups

damn you jumbaco people

I was craving some Jack all game, and I’m supposed to be on a diet.

haha i started putting it on the laker blog right now lol

Mo/Foye/Gomes

Looks like last year’s Back Court trio will be pressed into great duties in the immediate future.
They all played okay tonite. Yes, I consider Foye’s 2-11 performance okay. Their play will be crucial in the next few games as the Clips schedule ramps up dramatically. NJ should be a breeze, then things get more difficult from there. Billups will play more minutes than he should, but hopefully that doesn’t affect his shooting legs. Gomes has been serviceable lately and has stepped up defensively. Bottom line, Foye, better start getting hot for the tough stretch next week.
Jasen Powell will again be a hot topic on the Blog.

Damn! Clippers victory made it to Spain's newspapers
Madelyn Burke video time

http://www.nba.com/clippers/video/2012/01/15/PostLACvsLAL0114-1966328/index.html

Reggie Evans looks and sounds very laid back in formal clothes. He has a Kimbo Slice beard.

No love for Caron?

Good recap, but gotta take issue with the idea that “only Gomes had success against Kobe.” Gomes had him for what, a couple minutes in the 2nd quarter? Caron did a GREAT job on Kobe tonight, as he did against LBJ on Wednesday. He had the duty for most of the 1st half, when Kobe had 11 on 3-12 shooting. Then VDN put Billups/Foye on Kobe in the 3rd, and that’s when Kobe went off. Caron took him again late in the 4th, just in time to help cool him off as we pulled away.

At 31, Caron may not be the defender he once was. But he’s also not the same guy everyone was blowing by the first 3 or 4 games of the season. Now that he’s in game shape, I think we’re starting to see the real Tough Juice. Makes me feel A LOT better about our prospects against the top teams and their dominant wing scorers.

Truth

Tough Juice’s swag is ridiculous!

He had a so so performance

He’s definitely a lot better than Gomes (duh?)

I thought his defense on Kobe was solid. He didn’t let Kobe get layups and while Kobe scored over him in the 2nd half they were super tough shots you have to live with him taking.

On offense he needs to stop reloading. He’ll sometimes catch a pass, think about driving and then force a jumper. I haven’t track these all but he rarely makes it when he reloads. Shoot it in rhythm Caron or pass it to a teammate. You’ll get the ball back soon.

he had 13

another doulbe digit game. He is really a steadying force.

and about him reloading for shots

I absolutely agree. It is like the Gomes/Griffin hesitation that kills rythmn. I mentioned it a few times in the thread.

agree LJ!

I’ve been sayin that for the longest. just not on here since I’m fairly new. about blake and his reloading.

His hesitation affects rhythm of the team in a possession.
Well, the topic here was defense

So it sounds like you agree.

Yea

he’s the only one on the team that can make Kobe at least work. Foye too short. Billups too small. Gomes too slow (he did nicely on one play but then fell for a Kobe fake and fouled him). Clips could definitely use an athletic wing off the bench. I’m liking my Mo for Sefolosha and Mohammed trade idea more and more.

Yeah, I like that idea too

Too bad Presti probably doesn’t. He’d be plugging 2 holes for us while committing $8.5MM for next year to a player he won’t even need when Maynor comes back.

Mo would be a nice trade chip

also I think the Lakers would still have the trade exception (if they don’t use it by the deadline) if he wants to salary dump. He’s really just giving up Sefolosha (and his bargain contract) since Nazr is expiring and they have Ibaka/Collison/Perkins already.

but yes

Presti probably knows the value of Sefo and Nazr and wouldn’t want to help a potential playoff foe.

That place was pretty electric tonight

As a STH going to Lakers – Clippers games usually sucks (for reasons I’m sure we’re all very aware of). However, for the first time in my 4 years of being a STH I felt like the Clippers fans outnumbered the Lakers fans. And it felt damned good.

Kind of off topic, but I went over to Clipperblog and like someone said on another thread, they’re focus on “big name Clippers” with glaring skepticism is becoming nauseating. Blah.

It was Electronic!

By the way when are we gonna see the CP3O action figures????

I'm someone

Clipperblog is written by Lakers fans that want to make it as sportwriters. It’s all good until we became real rivals.

That is my version and I’m sticking to it.

Clipsnation > Clipperblog

I agree with you. I don’t think they’re true Clipper fans. Just wanna-bes trying to make it on Espn. Some of them are highlighted in those 5-on-5 segments on espn.com and their analysis bothers me and I think they’re more for the Lakers.

I must be on the wrong side of the building

I thought the crowd was 60/40 in favor of the Lakers. I’m seeing more Clipper jerseys than usual but I saw a lot of Laker ones. I loved how their fans left with 4 minutes left even though the game wasn’t completely over.

I don't know about that

I haven’t been to a rival game, but the sounds were definitely louder from the Clippers. Apart of it might be that Clippers fan don’t always wear Clippers gear to the game, but Laker fans obnoxiously love to try and wear it to ours. It’s annoying really, when you have a drunk prick wearing Laker gears at a game like Bucks or Charlotte game. Not sure why he didn’t get the memo..

I think the most telling reaction

was when Morris hit the halfcourt shot at the end of the half. Based on the number of people standing up and cheering it seemed like more than half.

I felt it more 50:50

at least in my vicinity. Laker fans were pretty obnoxious, more so than past Hallway games I’ve been to.

Best is a guy in front of me who bought the big game package. I just assumed he was a Clipper fan after seeing at the other home games, but he was once of the biggest Laker tools at last nights game.

Bah, damnit

It’s “their,” not “they’re.” I expect more from myself. Sorry, friends.

RE: Foye and Gomes

I feel like they are both adaquete backups, just not when they play TOGETHER. Vinny needs to rotate so that Foye plays when Butler is at the SF, and Gomes plays when Mo/Billups/Bled is at the SG.

Cook? I hope he is out for awhile with that ankle. He really seems like a nice guy, and he tries hard, but his shot selection is atroscious and he can’t play defense or even make the most basic open shots.

He's missing everything this year

I keep waiting for him to “get out of it”, but this might be a Rasual Butler-like slump that never seems to end. Thompkins should get some burn now.

Cook is saving his best for the playoffs. You'll see.

The majority of our guys are not shooting well behind the arc so far. They’ll have their moments.

Not really sure how good the 3pt shooting will be this year

Billups and Paul have been good this year as they have over their career.

Mo isn’t shooting as well as he has in the past, he should shoot better once he’s back.

Caron’s the tough one. He’s shooting 33% right now. His career 3pt shooting is just 32%. He shot 43% last year but in far fewer attempts. So not sure if last year was a bit flukish based on small sample size or is he really a 33% 3pt shooter.

Foye and Cook are shooting terribly but really even if they were shooting their career 3pt avg they don’t do enough elsewhere to justify playing regular rotation minutes.

and Bledsoe

is not a very good shooter, when he returns. Do we even have to talk about Gomes’ %?

Gomes is ok

he at least knows his limitations so he barely shoots. He does very little to help the team win but he doesn’t kill them as much as Foye who was brutal tonight up until he made a shot towards the end. Foye’s that guy at the gym who thinks he’s much better than he is yet doesn’t seem to realize his team never wins. 80% of his shots are just terrible decisions. And my god that shot that was blocked by Kobe was embarrassing and looked like a momentum changer.

that shot

was with the shot clock winding down. It was ugly, but not a whole lot he could do. He cought it with only a couple secondsto work with and decided to try and draw a foul on a pump fake.

Plain and simple

it was still embarrassing.

I don’t mind Gomes. He’s not hitting the open jumper as we thought, but he knows that, so he passes. He doesn’t take bad shots, hits the open shots a good (est.)40% of the time, and plays better D in Foye. I know we wanted a Battier, but we got the dollar tree version, and I’ll live with it.

40% is bad

but at least he only shoots a few times a game so it doesn’t hurt much. Foye twice as often and is even less efficient.

Gomes

partly i think the problem is his three pointer. He has been a reasonable outside shooter for his career (33-38% every year) but he has been a pathetic 1-7 this season. Small sample size, but I would like for him to hit some of those, at least at his 34% clip from last season, if not his 37% from the two seasons prior.

Of course it's bad

Pretty much summed up what I was going to say: Gomes doesn’t usually take bad shots, just good shots that turn bad. Luckily for us, he doesn’t average enough attempts to destroy us like Cook since Gomes can also play some quality D.

He got the ball with like 8 seconds

instead of trying to drive then or pass to a teammate he dribbled for like 4-5 seconds got nowhere and was forced to take a tough off balance shot (which he poorly tried to draw a foul) and got blocked badly by a STANDING Kobe that led to a fast break.

+1

Gomes has no business starting, but he can play a little D, grab a board or two, and most importantly, keep the ball moving on O. Foye is a black hole. (It’s OK to pass the ball to a teammate every once in a while, Randy. Really, it is. I hope you try it sometime.)
