The Big Picture:
This is just another game in the NBA schedule. Everybody else in the world would have you believe that it is the Battle of Los Angeles, the most monumental NBA game to occur in the history of the city, but it's not. It's just a game. I mean, sure, the winner will be in first place in the division, and second place in the conference. And yes, it's a chance to send a message to the other team in town. And OK, the future of the free world does hang in the balance. But it's just another game. Obviously, the Clippers traded for Chris Paul in December, while the Lakers had a dismal off-season that included losing out on Chris Paul in controversial fashion. This is the first regular season meeting between the teams since the Chris Paul era began (the age of relevance, as I like to say). So sure, it means something a little extra. The Clippers come into the game well rested and presumably well prepared, following two days off after an overtime win over the Heat on Wednesday night. The Clippers also have the momentum/confidence (such as it is) of having beaten the Lakers twice in pre-season, their only other meetings of the Chris Paul era. One presumes that the Clippers won't come out flat in this one, as the team should be really fired up to face their city rivals.

The Antagonist:
The Lakers have won five straight, including last night against Cleveland. Kobe Bryant has been carrying the team, scoring 40+ in three straight games to take the NBA scoring lead. But the Lakers current 9-4 record is padded by a whole bunch of home games - they're 8-1 at home (they've played more home games than any team in the league), but only 1-3 on the road. This isn't exactly a road game for them in that there's no travel, but it's not really a home game either. The Lakers have had some players out recently - some came back, other went out, but really who cares? Other than Kobe, Pau Gasol and Anderw Bynum, the others are interchangeably terrible. If one or more of them is missing, it's not like their replacements could be significantly worse. BUT, Bryant, Gasol and Bynum are all monsters, and they can win a LOT of games all by themselves. And make no mistake - the Lakers have seen the stories, they've heard the reports that the Clippers are challenging their supremacy in LA - they will be hyper-motivated to win this game. It was simple enough to brush aside pre-season losses - this one counts.
The Subplots
- All-Star game. When the game tips off tonight, there will be five likely Western Conference All Stars on the floor, four of them starters. Blake Griffin, Chris Paul, Kobe Bryant and Andrew Bynum would all be starters if the voting ended today, and Pau Gasol will likely be selected as a replacement.
- Road wins versus home losses. I mentioned the other day that the home court advantage seems especially pronounced this season. There's an old trick some people use to try to gauge a team's real strength when their schedule has been particularly uneven (i.e. a disproportionate number of home games or road games). You express the record as the road wins compared to the home losses. If a team has more road wins than home losses, it's the equivalent of being above .500 in a normalized schedule. Fewer road wins than home losses, below .500. There are currently eight Western Conference teams with an overall record above .500. However, there are only two above .500 by this method. The Thunder are a stellar 5 road wins versus 1 home loss, while Denver is a less impressive 2-1. The Lakers and the Clippers? Each 1-1.
- CP3 must take control. The Clippers have been their best this season (beating Miami, blowing out Houston) when Chris Paul has been aggressive on the offensive end. That will absolutely have to be the case tonight. The Lakers have a terrible time defending quick point guards (as evidenced by Paul's dismantling of them in last year's playoffs), while Pau Gasol tends to give Blake Griffin fits. Paul will need to be the focal point of the offense for much of the evening if the Clippers hope to win.
- Five game win streak. Yes, the Lakers have won five straight. But this looks a lot like a schedule streak. Four of the wins came against teams under .500, and only one came on the road. If they can beat the Clippers in front of the LAC crowd, it will mean a little more than beating the likes of the Cavs and the Suns and the Warriors.
- Kobe on a tear (in his ligament). Kobe has scored 42, 40 and 48 in the Lakers last three games to raise his average above 31 points per game, best in the NBA. Although he tore a ligament in his wrist against the Clippers in pre-season, as is his custom he has played through the pain, and says that it's feeling much better. He has taken 31 shots in each of the last three games. No other Laker has taken more than 16 during that time.
- Defending Kobe. The last thing the Clippers want to see in this game is a dialed in Kobe Bryant. The combination of point guards and combo guards on the Clippers roster is great on offense, and fine on defense against most teams. But none of them has the size to really defend Bryant. In pre-season, Vinny Del Negro started the game with Caron Butler on Kobe (leaving Chauncey Billups to defend the far less dangerous Matt Barnes). I think we can expect to see different players on Bryant, as well as different defensive looks, including plenty of double teaming.
- Bynum loves the Clippers. A little less than three years ago, on January 21 2009, Andrew Bynum scored 42 points while grabbing 15 rebounds against the Clippers. That 42 point game still stands as Bynum's career high, and in fact, his second highest game is 29. Bynum also scored 26 in just 31 minutes against the Clippers in the second pre-season game last month. Something about the Clippers seems to bring out the best in Drew.
- Tough task for DJ. DeAndre Jordan has a very, very difficult task ahead of him this evening. He's leading the NBA in blocked shots per game, but in the second pre-season game, when he left Bynum to go challenge shots, Bynum invariably gobbled up the loose ball and scored. DJ has to use some discretion and not go after every single block when he's responsible for a monster like Bynum. That means he'll have to resist the urge to go chase impossible blocks and instead box out Bynum, which is simply not in DeAndre's nature. I will say this - he's shown some real progress as a post defender this year. He's had huge individual defensive plays, not just blocking shots, but also on the ball, against the likes of LaMarcus Aldridge and Chris Bosh this season. He needs some of that defensive discipline tonight.
- Tough schedule, easy schedule - a matter of perspective. The Clippers have played a league low eight games so far, two fewer than any other team. The Lakers have played 13, tied with Chicago for the most. So that means the Clippers have played an easy schedule. But the Clippers have, among their eight games, played five teams against teams with a winning percentage better than .600 (Portland twice, San Antonio, Chicago, Miami) while the Lakers have played only four such games in their 13 (Denver twice, Chicago, Portland).
- Pau Troubles Blake. Few defenders in the league seem to give Blake more trouble than Pau Gasol. Gasol is smart, he won't get beaten easily, and he's crazy long, long enough to bother Griffin's shot. As a result, Blake struggled against the Lakers last season, shooting below 40% in three of the four meetings. Houston (and his other nemesis, Chuck Hayes) is the only team to hold him to a lower shooting percentage among Western Conference teams. However, it should be noted that Griffin did shake off a terrible start against the Lakers to score 10 fourth quarter points in his team's only win over their rivals last season. He'll need to battle through again tonight for the Clippers to be successful.
- Laker injuries. The Lakers got Josh McRoberts and Troy Murphy back from injury against Cleveland last night. Jason Kapono also returned to the lineup after the birth of his twins (congrats, Jason). However, they also lost Steve Blake for about a month with a cracked rib cage, and
Ron Artest Metta World Peach sat out with a sore Achilles tendon and a bad back. Blake is definitely out for this one - we'll have to wait and see if the trainers will give World Peace a chance (to play basketball).
- Rebounding. The Lakers are averaging the second most rebounds per game in the NBA. The Clippers are averaging the fewest. If the Clippers don't commit to rebounding in this game, it could get ugly. Of course, the Lakers bounded them on the boards in both the pre-season games and the Clippers still won, but somehow I don't feel like counting on that.
- The message if the Clippers win: We're for real, we're a real threat to you, we believe we're the best team in LA, and we certainly have the brightest future. We know this has been your town, but it's going to be ours.
- The message if the Lakers win: Pre-season, schmreseason. We're still the Lakers, look up and count the banners. It doesn't matter how many dunks you get, or who you trade for. You'll always be the other team in this town.
- The crowd. In years past, the crowd at a Clippers home game against the Lakers has seemed to be about 45% Lakers fans. I thought that might change with interest in the Clippers sky high, but during the pre-season game, it seemed about the same as always. So it figures that there will be plenty of Lakers fans in the crowd tonight. The atmosphere at the pre-season game was electric. The crowd was completely nuts - and that was pre-season! I can only imagine what it's going to be like tonight.

KillaClip - January 14, 2012 via mobile
Blake and Jordan have to commit to boxing out both of them trying to jump higher or try drawing fouls while jumping up is far to great of a risk. Jordan can’t help weakside this game at all if Bynum is in which is a huge risk considering how often our perimeter guys get beat off the dribble or lost on pick and rolls.
Butler and Billups must help rebound no running down the floor early secure the ball and push from there its a harder transition move but it limits the Lakers second chance points. Paul has to play the passing lanes Fisher can hit some big 3’sto at the worse times but we need Paul distributing the Laker ball movement.
Most important above all else DO NOT PLAY BRIAN COOK! I know its going to happen but if Vinny has any chance to avoid it please do.
Go Clips!

keep us updated on the game Chuck
i think Blake “the Big Red Machine” will take over and 35/17/4 and Chris Paul will destroy Fisher w 31, 15 assist, 6 stls
Kobe is on fire and I don’t think we have anyone who can come close to containing him so he is gonna go off for his 40+. Bynum will give DJ a ton of trouble.
Key to the game for me is DJ’s foul situation. If he stays in the game to play solid D, then we got this
Go Big Red!!
benoitcagewoodson - January 14, 2012
the key will be Paul and rebounding
I don’t care if Kobe goes for 50 if he does it at his per usual 45% fg rate. What we can’t have is Gasol and Bynum dominating the glass and getting easy baskets.
DJ, Evans and BG will have to play well tonight to win. I expect nice shooting games for CP3 (who should be able to kill the Lakers D) and Billups (who will get a lot of wide open looks because Kobe tends to drift).
ClipperChuck - January 14, 2012
yep
does feel like stakes are high, and I don’t even live in LA. I think I just want to see a win so bad that I’m worried. The Clips “home game” in preseason, the Lakers came shooting lights out, and that was without Kobe. Definitely think it’ll take another herculean effort from CP ala last year’s playoffs. Triple-double anyone?
Clips gotta play to their strengths and limit mistakes. Definitely have to win the turnover battle, with the Lakeshow near the top of the league in TO’s and the Clips at the bottom. Forcing steals and getting out on the break, pushing those tired legs will definitely play to the clips advantage.
not that I ever advocate dirty play, but tell Reggie, if he’s going to take a shot, to go for the wrist not the usual sensitive area. Might be a hard adjustment for him, but for once, his usual tactics might not be the most sensitive area on Kobe (especially since Vanessa probably took the other parts with her). Just a poke or two, enough to get the injury in his mind, haha.
I hope the crowd is mostly Clips fans, or at least the ones that are there are louder than the lakers fans. Maybe the clips should give laker fans umbellas, they won’t be used to the bright lights in staples.

We tried selling our seats but no one would bite. I hate Lakers – Clippers games; it only further highlights why I can’t stand their fans when we get ridiculed and taunted for showing up to our own teams game. Chumps.

No Blake - The Lakers Should Be No Problem For The Clippers Tonight
With Steve Blake out no way the Lakers can beat the Clippers. LOL
Actually now that the Lakers are not running the triangle offense exclusively they rely more on the traditional PG functions. We here at Clips Nation know about Steve Blake’s game all to well. While not up to the level of any of the Clippers Big Three PGs Blake’s presence on the Lakers second unit definitely helps the Lakers. The Lakers bench is pretty thin and I think the Clippers will use their advantage there to win the game.
Las Vegas has the Clippers as 3 point favorites. Sounds about right to me.

I am sure the Laker starters had to play more minutes
than Mike Brown wanted them to last night after Cleveland came back and made it a game. I say we run their tired legs tonite. Chances of Clippers winning? 65% Chances of Matt Barnes getting into an altercation with a Clipper? 90%.
PV Mike - January 14, 2012
Wow, I read some comments on the Steve Blake Injury.
Lakers really think they have some trade assets! They are saying that they have 2 options, Westbrook or Williams. Apparently Westbrook will find his way to LA (and I’m sure his ego won’t clash with Kobe and Bynums) through a 3 team trade. Pau to the Celtics (Don’t know why Celtics would want him), Rondo to Thunder, and Westbrook to LA. HAHA.
SurfinQ00 - January 14, 2012
A couple things here
I am well aware of the so called friction in OK City but if Westbrook is traded I do not see this happening until the season ends or after analyzing how well they do in the playoffs.Westbrook also wants a max contract extension.
I also watch all the Laker games and realize the allure of playing for them. But if you were a star player, especially a point guard who likes to shoot like Deron or Westbrook, would you really like to play with Kobe? Seems you are just magnifying a problem for Westbrook. I think Kobe is getting shots in his wrist not due to injury but so he can shoot more.
PV Mike - January 14, 2012
Shots In His Wrist?
I hadn’t heard that before. It could be true.
I read Kobe was considering using the same unorthodox healing technique on his wrist that he used on his knee. Haven’t head if he decided to actually do it.
Buddahfan - January 14, 2012
He has been numbing his wrist before the games due to his injury
from falling against the Clippers in preseason. As long as he keeps playing it will be a long heal.
PV Mike - January 14, 2012
Westbrook will NOT fit into LA.
Honestly, I don’t think Mo Williams will either. When you play with Kobe, you need to be a pass first PG like Rondo or CP3. Westbrook would be one of the worst fits there seeing as he will clash with Kobe during end game situations and throughout the rest of the game if he doesn’t get a shot he likes.
SurfinQ00 - January 14, 2012
Mo is still a significantly better playmaker than anyone else on their roster
He is just a far better PG overall than Fisher, Blake, or Morris.
NewCavsfan - January 14, 2012

Natedog1977 - January 14, 2012
Margin...
I see one of two thing happening.
Game is extemely close. DJ and/or BG get into foul trouble and Pau continues to frustrate BG. Kobe goes for 40+ and shoots a bunch of free throws. Someone makes a big play in the last minute and one team wins by four our less.
Clippers win by 15+. Lakers give it a try, but with no Blake, no Bench and an overused Big Three, the Clilppers do what Denver did to the Heat last night; run them into the ground in the second half and pull away. I could see Kobe sitting out the last three minutes of the game as the Clippers have an insurmountable lead.
And yes, there will be a few technical fouls called.
Clippers 105
Lakers 90

Caron Butler needs to attack Matt Barnes
And CP3 must destroy the Lakers defense. He doesnt have to score 20 points, but if he doesnt, then I want to see at least 15 assists.
NewCavsfan - January 14, 2012
Don't see this being the winning formula
Butler isn’t going to be able to iso Barnes and do much damage. Everything needs to run through CP3 and Billups. With Mo out the bench will be horrible. VDN will have to figure out way to stagger the rotation so we don’t see Leslie Foye, Cook, Evans and Gomes all out their at once. I’m going to the concession stands if that happens.
ClipperChuck - January 14, 2012
Our backcourt should have a field day out there.
but i guess the same can be said about their frontcourt.
Doubling Kobe without leaving Pau or Bynum open seems like an obvious tactic. Make one of the other two guys score as often as you can. Easier said than done, of course, but stringing together some of those defensive stretches the clips showed against Miami will go a long way.

It's gonna be interesting to see how VDN play's this with no Mo.
He’s got to have either CP3 or Billups out there at all times.

Try out Lil Chucker, because he has the occasional awesome game, and they often come when needed.

Oh yeah, one of our guards has got to be out there at all times.
I think Billups would be perfect running the second unit. Maybe have Leslie play with the starters a bit more and leave the bench with Billups, Foye, Gomes, Evans, and Trey (no freakin Cook).
Give Leslie a crash course in defending and stick him on Kobe? Haha, he’d get destroyed the way Kobe has been scoring.

…I began thinking the same thing.
With Mo out, Foye is looking mighty good as a scorer off of the bench. Buuuuuut, we should not be the least bit worried being without one of our many guards….if we stagger the rotation correctly always having at least 2 of the “4”(Chris, Caron, Chauncey and Blake) on Tue floor at all times, we should hardly loose a beat.
Takebb909 - January 14, 2012 via mobile
That sucks.
Mo is a key part to our offense not dropping off the map when the starters leave. Vinny has got to keep 1 of Paul/Billups/Bulter in at all times. None of this platoon swap nonsense.

If he doesn’t play Brian Cook. We should be fine. Foye can easily fill Mo’s void. I see CP3, Blake, and DJ playing more minutes.

It’s getting beyond ridiculous. Our bench can’t afford to let Cook shot his way out of his “slump”.
dulciusXasperis - January 14, 2012

Cay.Clipper1 - January 14, 2012
it makes ZERO sense, and i find it hard to believe that trey could do worse.
He certainly wouldn’t chuck up 3’s that have no chance of falling. In my mind, the worst case scenario is that trey is equally bad, but at least he would be getting some exposure, and as fans, we would just blame it on inexperience and feel much better overall.
indy818 - January 14, 2012

BoSoxFan45 - January 14, 2012
I wouldn't say that R.Foye can easily fill in for M.Williams
M.Williams has a better offensive game in my opinion. I can think of too many times where R.Foye would dribble penetrate and just not be able to finish a layup because he was expecting a foul…

Mo is a better offensive player, but I believe Foye can put the same numbers.

Foye is garbage. Unless the NBA adopts the college 3pt line he will continue to be garbage with his patented foot on the line 2s.

cassellmania - January 14, 2012
Lakers have more to lose
what if kobe goes down? They gonna start Steve Blake at sg? We at least have decent backups(Mo/Foye/Bledsoe at guard, Gomes at sf, evans at pf/c) who I would trust starting on an injury support basis.
LJ Hann - January 14, 2012
Hmm
pretty sure if BG or CP3 (or even DJ) went down we’d be screwed. And LOL at us having decent backups beyond Mo and Evans.
ClipperChuck - January 14, 2012
I don't mean good by any stretch of the imagination
but gomes is a guy who has started 369 games and been a starter basically every year he has been in the league. Foye has proven himself to be a capable backup, averaging 10/3 last year.
I by no means am suggesting that Gomes or Foye are starters. I am just saying that if we lost Butler or Billups for a week or 2 I would be ok with either of them stepping up.
If we lose CP3, then Mo/Bledsoe shoulder the load. If we lose Blake/DJ, then Evans starts, but there’s nobody else. This is why I support getting some Sheed.
LJ Hann - January 14, 2012
Lakers have a deeper bench than the Clips overall
Clips bench beyond Evans and Mo are terrible in fact terrible might be too nice.
http://www.82games.com/1112/1112LAC.HTM
There’s a huge drop off from CP3 to Mo. There’s a huge dropoff from BG to Evans. And then Brian Cook or Randy Foye get more minutes and its ugly real fast.
ClipperChuck - January 14, 2012
Foye needs to step up with Mo out this game. I expect the lakers to really hustle. They have been playing really hard early this season, I guess they know they are not as talented as before. Kobe will shoot 30-40 times, this can really hurt them. Especially when he doesn’t pass the ball to his wide open teammates. I expect bush tactics and techs from Bynum, Barnes, or Fisher. DJ should not worry about blocking every shot, in this game you want to play great man and position defense. The 7 footers will bother Blake, but he will be just fine. He’s quicker than their players and if they give him the jumper he might be hot. I think he will be revved up to play. Paul will dominate, even when he doesn’t score. Cook should not play a minute. Thank goodness we have Evans now, to help us on the boards. Our front court needs to concentrate on those boards.
tenkaistar - January 14, 2012
remember rhino used to kill the lakers' length?
evans is cut of the same mold
LJ Hann - January 14, 2012
He really just used to kill Lamar Odom.
So no big loss, really.
SUCKS we lost Mo.
Gordon for President - January 14, 2012
yep, Mo is more important to us than Steve Blake is to them.
chrisd - January 14, 2012
Definitely
It’s a significant loss, that will taint the meaning of the game just a bit. Mo has already been a crucial weapon for the Clips in the young season. He has been fast and accurate and effective, picking up the pace for a team that already challenges opponents to match its guard play. And the weakness of the Faux Lesbians is the guard play, Fisher and Blake.
The equation of why S. Blake is less valuable, when the FL’s are actually thinner at the position, is a little tricky. Mo is simply the better, more effective player. S. Blake has had his moments, but not as a Faux Lesbian.
All of that, and Bledsoe is still out. This little tweak—let’s hope that’s what it is—to Mo shows the importance of depth. Would be nice to have Bledsoe without Mo around.
The Clips should be okay with Foye. But it sets up some changes in the matchup the next time the teams meet.
citizen zhiv - January 14, 2012
Speed and quickness can kill length at times. Let’s utilize what we have and box out.
tenkaistar - January 14, 2012

nauticazn25 - January 14, 2012
Whose feeling good!!?!?!
I’m ready to see some major boardage from Reggie and Blake, Mo Gotti keeping it gangster rocking a black headband, handling business on that 2nd unit (hopefully passing some more), Mr. Big Shot..well making big shots…and a massive Caron Butler DUNK! Hopefully Andrew Bynum doesn’t elbow anybody in the throat, If he does he might run into Caron and Reggie in the players lot after the game….woudn’t be be pretty. Oh yeah…that guy, CP3…a monster game too. Earthquake Griffin should be good for a double double right boys? He’s due…he hasn’t had one….well…since last game right?
Jeff Shepherd - January 14, 2012
Mo is out
LJ Hann - January 14, 2012
Clippers are undefeated when I wear my jersey
Hopefully that trend continues tonight
Ricekrispy10 - January 14, 2012
awesome
Clippers lost to Portland when I wore a Clips shirt this week so i didn’t wear it when they played Miami and the Clips won. I am not wearing a Clips shirt today (even though i really wanted to).
chrisd - January 14, 2012
Mo is out with a sore foot...
he should have that AFTER the game cus he kicked the Laker’s butts so hard…..beat THAT bad joke!!!
Jeff Shepherd - January 14, 2012

the heel or the ball? If it’s the ball, we know who to blame…
LJ Hann - January 14, 2012

LJ Hann - January 14, 2012
Someone who is down to grab another man's junk under the rim...

Jeff Shepherd - January 14, 2012
Reggie Evans grabbed Chris Kaman's junk.

Pawn - January 14, 2012
CP3/Griffin vs Rubio/Love for years to come
wilriv21 - January 14, 2012
Remember K. Love in college?
…with his spare tire around his waist chucking full court outlet passes? He ruled then too, just in a completely different way haha
Jeff Shepherd - January 14, 2012
Eh...well yeah...
“the heel or the ball? If it’s the ball, we know who to blame…”
I was thinking you were talking about Mr. Williams’s junk maybe getting grabbed by Mr. Evans. Haha…
Sorry, don’t mind me, I’m drinking Crown Royal pretty aggressively right now seeing as how I’m going to be getting tattooed for like 6 hours pretty soon here.
Jeff Shepherd - January 14, 2012

winewhine countrywilriv21 - January 14, 2012
Um, no...
Whose whining?
Wait…You guys don’t get the Chumash Casino commercials on your FSW broadcasts down south?
“Just 2 hours from center court!” haha Thats what they call it…“Win Country”. Buuuut If you’d like to whine, you can switch over to the Silver Screen and Roll thread.
Jeff Shepherd - January 14, 2012
ok
if you hit the reply button on the bottom line of someone’s comment, they will know that you are talking to them and the conversation is easier to follow. :)
LJ Hann - January 14, 2012
why don't you use the reply
XXDC2XX - January 14, 2012
and we get those commericals
wilriv just has interesting observations sometimes
LJ Hann - January 14, 2012
Aw crap, ya sorry
Yeah I was hitting reply then I stopped for some reason…I blame the drink. Sorry guys. Much love to everyone. And depending how far we get this year…there might be a FanShot of a fat guy sporting a “Lob City” tattoo in May. I said it here first.
Jeff Shepherd - January 14, 2012

chrisd - January 14, 2012
I'm DEAD serious...

Jeff Shepherd - January 14, 2012

Nawlins barely loses with 5 turnovers and NE has 5 TD passes – in 1st half alone
wilriv21 - January 14, 2012
this game's over
chrisd - January 14, 2012
HAHAHAHAHAHA
“The only The Broncos have a chance at coming back in this game is if Tom Brady goes over in the 2nd half and plays for the Broncos.”
-Dan Marino.
Laces out indeed.
Jeff Shepherd - January 14, 2012
O/T but
Mavs are getting their rings when rubio goes to dallas with the twolves… what about Caron Butler or Tyson Chndler?
LJ Hann - January 14, 2012
i believe they get them when we/NY visit them
don’t know if NY goes to Dallas this season or what happens if they don’t.
XXDC2XX - January 14, 2012
why did I put rubio? I meant barea
They are waiting for Barea for the whole team’s rings.
And Clips go to Dallas before Twolves I think. So does Caron get his first? Seems odd to me. Not often does a team lose so manyy rotation players after winning rings.
LJ Hann - January 14, 2012
then i guess he gets it when they come here.
XXDC2XX - January 14, 2012
yeah, it's not a big deal, but it seems wierd to me
LJ Hann - January 14, 2012
i don't get why don't they get them when the day they win the finals.
XXDC2XX - January 14, 2012
expensive
they don’t make them ahead of time like the hats and shirts
LJ Hann - January 14, 2012
