The Big Picture:
The Clippers will play their first game with Zach Randolph tonight, but with so little practice time, who knows how it will go. While the trade of Cat Mobley and Tim Thomas for Randolph and Mardy Collins clearly gives the team an upgrade of top tier NBA talent, it just as clearly makes their front court very crowded while leaving a big hole at the shooting guard. Yes, there are lots of minutes for three big men and 30+ for each of them would theoretically be fine. And maybe they can actually play all three of them together some as MDsr maintains, although I'm dubious about that. But the simple fact is that having three bigs making $10M+ each is not usually a recipe for success. So we'll see. At the same time, the team was 2-9 at the time of the trade (they're 2-11 now after two short-handed losses), so what they were doing wasn't working and the Clippers are trying something different - which is reasonable. The trade asks a whole slew of new questions - we'll begin to find out the answers tonight.
The Antagonist:
The Hornets were Western Conference Semi-Finalists a season ago, and with a young and improving core - in particular MVP candidate Chris Paul - expectations are very high for this team. Viewed through that prism their 7-5 start has got to be considered a disappointment. You think we were disappointed around here to lose a home game to the Kings playing without Kevin Martin? How do you think Hornets fans felt when the same thing happened last week? (By the way, props to Reggie Theus for having that Kings team playing hard.) I always questoined the Hornets' depth last season, and it seems to be an ongoing issue. The off-season addition of James Posey helps - but wasn't that the one position where they already had some depth? With Mike James deep in Byron Scott's doghouse, the backup point guard is Devin Brown - not a point guard, in other words. The first big off the bench is Hilton Armstrong. And although hopes were very high for second year player Julian Wright coming into the season, he's actually averaging FEWER minutes in the first 12 games than he played as a 20 year old rookie. Byron does get down on guys who don't play his way - witness his J.R. Smith - but the Hornets really need to develop a bench if they expect to move deeper into the playoffs. Still, the starters are terrific. Paul and David West are coming off all star seasons. Peja Stojakovic can still shoot the three (although his overall percentage is actually lower than his three point percentage so far this season) and Tyson Chandler is a terrific defender and rebounder at the center. The two guard remains a little bit of a weak link, something the Clippers now know well. It doesn't help that Morris Peterson has missed the last couple of games with a sore knee, though he is supposed to be back tonight.

Is Zach playing tonight?
by Qlippers on Nov 24, 2008 12:50 PM PST
Don't know...
Press availability at 5:30 today…. Ralph said he would play during Saturday’s broadcast. I assume he’ll play if he doesn’t fail the physical.
by Steve Perrin on Nov 24, 2008 12:54 PM PST
according to the clippers pregame report
he is
http://www.nba.com/clippers/games/pregame_NOHLAC_081124.html

Bad News
ZACH RANDOLPH IS NOT PLAYING TONIGHT! Very sad. According to 710 ESPN, and a local media source (Eric from HoopsWorld), the physical was not done in time and Randolph, nor Collins, will suit up.
Can this team do anything right?!
by LAC on Nov 24, 2008 4:12 PM PST
Are you sure it was us?
I’m hearing NYK was the ones taking their time with the physicals since they don’t have a game tonight.
by madglove on Nov 24, 2008 4:57 PM PST
I'm hearing it is Cat and Tim's physical...
Funny thing is, the front line has been ok. Zach wasn’t going to do a lot tonight, let’s face facts. But still, I’m going to this game… would have been interesting to see him.

Unbelievable...
At least if we’re going to play short handed again, let’s give DeAndre some minutes. Even if we lose by 50 tonight, it will be entertaining…I am regretting my season tix renewal now. The good thing is, if anybody is interested, you can score season seats near the Clippers bench next season as there will be alot more exodus after this disastrous campaign. All you passionate anti-Dunleavy folks can scream into his ear to your heart’s content…

"Gimme the ball"
I have a feeling that ZBO and Dun are in for an interesting relationship. Skills wise, Zach has all of the offensive skills that a guy like Dunleavy covets, as CS pointed out. Coach loves guys that can post up and draw a double team. If the double doesn’t come, it should lead to a close, high % shot. That, essentially, is the Dunleavy offense. I think they will be on the same page here.
Of course, the double-team probably will come if it is Zach Randolph holding the ball on the block. It has to. The guy is way to skilled down low. Step two of MDSr’s extensive offensive playbook is the passing out of the double-team. This is something that we have watched both Elton Brand and Chris Kaman steadily improve at over the years. I have not seen a whole lot of Zach’s game, but from what I hear, passing back out is not exactly his strong suit (nor his desire). We know how Dunleavy feels about shot selection. What I am really looking forward to is MRSr’s reaction the first time THIS happens (I love that video).
And then there is defense. As ClipperBlog said in his not-so-glowing piece before the Randolph trade, Zach has “demonstrated neither a desire nor the aptitude to play defense”. We have seen lesser talents like Chris Wilcox and James Singleton languish on the pines for their supposed lack of defensive prowess in practice, despite our desires as fans to see them play. I don’t expect the same fate for ZBO, I do wonder where he is gong to fall on the deflections chart.
The good news is that Dunleavy emphasizes team defense over individual skill. His system does make it possible for very mediocore individual defenders to succeed if they make the effort. So who knows.
After carefully thinking about it, I think the guy is very talented and should be quite effective on the block with Kaman. It is kind of like Dunleavy’s wet dream to have two skilled bigs requiring DT’s in the post, and a PG that can get them the ball. Good luck.

Nice Roundup
Should be an easier matchup for Gordon tonight. If he can take advantage, maybe that can help his confidence. Have been reading a lot of positive things about Randolph lately, but there’s a lot more to the contrary that follows him around.
by ghost_ride on Nov 24, 2008 1:16 PM PST
I can't imagine Randolph playing more than limited minutes
I’m going to guess he’s going to be in the 10-15 minute area for this game. His offense and MDsr’s offense may match, however Zach has got to learn our defense which will take more time.
I’ll try to catch the 4th quarter of this game tonight, hopefully when I tune in, it won’t be a complete route.

The last paragraph made me laugh...

Paul Davis' Glare
Never really noticed how much Davis(3) squints his eyes, seems to always have the same impression. Give him a couple of cool points…

deandre jordan could’ve gotten an oop which would’ve blew the roof off the building. but instead, chris paul defended it well so he couldn’t grasp it. deandre also airballed a free throw. but at least he played right?
by wongy on Nov 24, 2008 11:10 PM PST
Great to have cheap center court seats
Didn’t really seem like the Hornets cared much. Its like you know the Clippers are just going to lose it late in the game anyway. So dead at Staples tonight. Don’t know what else to say. Gordon got 25 pts, but didn’t look that good. He’s only 19 though.
by FireDunleavy.com on Nov 24, 2008 11:48 PM PST
Gordon was awesome...
Hmm I don’ t know, the Staples Center seems more packed tonight than usual this year. Even the 300 sections were filled up, though they might have given those tickets away. Both Taylor and Gordon played their hearts out and Gordon got most of his 25 points in the second half after going to the locker room with the sprained ankle in the 1st. Ricky Davis not getting any minutes at all today was a move in the right direction by Dunleavy. So we have some positive developments tonight even though we ended up 2-12. But seriously, I didn’t think we would win these three games at home anyways. I’m looking for growth from the rookies and competitiveness from the team at this point rather than actual wins.
by MichaelCage on Nov 25, 2008 12:01 AM PST
300s
Lots of groups. But you know what, that’s a fine strategy for a struggling team.
Ricky had tendinitis in his knee. It wasn’t a case of MDsr giving up on him. He couldn’t go. We still need him, at least to back up the three. So it would be good if he could make a shot or two this season.
